This machine is worth picking up, it pays fast, its fun and the artwork is excellent. And who doesn't like the angels?
Make sure you take care of that backglass. If you pass on this game you will kick yourself.

An early solid state (early enough that there was an EM version as well) and you can tell by the lack of sounds going on. I could swear those Coleco handheld games of the same time period had more sounds in them than this pinball. It's not the greatest shooter either. Wide open with a lot of top-to-bottom motion is nice, but the upper left is utterly pointless -- shoot the ball there and will rattle around and come back. Nothing happens there, ever.

Rules are basic and so is the artwork. Almost definitely the worst System 1. The maligned Dragon of the same year at least has a spinner and some vari-targets and just more do to. Charlie's Angels has two banks of drops and some roll over lanes, the end. Would be a lot more fun if the left side wasn't a waste. It all seems quickly put together.

I brought a CA back to life recently and really enjoy playing it. My main gripe is the left ramp to nowhere, which about 50% of the time sends the ball right back down the middle. I like the rules via the drop target banks, which believe it or not, makes for a challenging game and relatively low high scores. Playfield art is good and colorful. My cabinet is worn and faded but I can see how a bright cabinet and glass would make it a piece of 70s art.

Charlie’s Angels is a massive mixed bag to me. I definitely think some elements are pretty solid, but others are absolutely dreadful.

Pro’s:
Features a fun layout: definitely a target shooting game where the objective is to max your bonus and cash out.

Inlane/outlane situation is fairly unique, visually the way it’s done reminds me of Skateball.

Artwork is decent. Not particularly outstanding or well done, but it works for the theme. I do like the choice of colors, though.

Build quality is well done, like other Gottliebs of this era.

Nit-Picks (not factored into rating):

Not sure if this was an issue with the copy I played, but the left slingshot does not appear to have a kicker while the right one does? Seems to be kind of pointless, especially if the rubbers were dead.

The pop bumper placement seems pretty random and illogical. Not sure why they even put more then one in the first place.

Con’s:

Sound is just dreadful. Honestly, why would you move to electronic sounds if this is the best you can get? Gottlieb should have stuck with chimes until their technology got better.

Upper lanes don’t seem to have too much value other then adding bonus and lighting the rollovers (which also add much bonus). There are already many other ways to build up bonus, making the existence of the lanes pointless.

Racking up bonus and cashing out is fun to achieve, it doesn’t suffice for a long term/well playing game.

Overall, this game definitely has some good elements to it, but it also has some truly terrible aspects to it.

Coming in at #360 I say Charlie's Angels gets a Bad Rap .Its a odd layout that gives you a chance to work this game to get your good scores. There's always something to shot for which keeps it exciting like a good mystery . I enjoy smashing a white target then ricochet to hit the reds . Getting your balls up top to light CHIC can be a challenge which some think it is a bad design but really if it was easier CA would be to easy.

I used to own this game. Was decent to play, just could have been much more fun. Great theme at the time.

My first game that i've owned since 1982. 34 years and will never give up my first kid. Still a fun game to play almost daily.

This game's layout was the test platform for the System 1 operating system, thus, it was a game without a theme, probably, from birth, only to have the Angels slapped on it as a marketing tool. The fun begins and ends with wailing away on the drop targets. Lots of dead space on the playfield, exemplified by the one-way space that leads behind the pop bumpers: you can't shoot it back up to the rollovers! The art package is okay, if not disjointed with a few different art styles butting heads, which just makes things super confusing (the dancing girl in the bikini and the cartoony police officer don't mesh with the realism of the Angels themselves. About the only thing going for it is the Charlie's Angels nostalgia

Update: played this some more and it is a lot more fun than i thought, increasing bonus x is a nice challenge.

When I first got this machine working I was underwhelmed and anxious to sell it . As I got it dialed in and continued to play and learn the simple rules and challenging shots. I became hooked. The cab looks great, The backglass like an odd dated family photo, the playfield odd and stupid. The sound simple and zen like. I wish i could sell it but I don't think I ever will.

One of the worst pinball machines I know of. Granted, I haven't played that many, but it's just a bore to play. It functions like one, but the design has nothing going for it. Doesn't help that the backglass art is downright ugly. It does a decent job with the theme and it's still a pinball machine. That's about all I have that's good to say about it.

Charlie's Angels is a game that was designed by one of the most tepid designers in the industry Allen Edwall.

The Pros:
Good shots to the drops. The right orbit with the drops just underneath it is well done. The cop on the lower left looks like he's having fun with his radio.

The Cons:
A semi-decent PF on the right is offset by a lane of the left that takes up 1/3rd of the layout and all it does is feed the bell from the top lanes to the lower pop and PF. Morrison is used to making his kind of woman on an art package but was constricted to the reality and agents of the TV show. Is is just me or could this deck REALLY use a spinner?

The Takeaway:
Centrigrade 37 is the only table with Edwall's name associated with it as the designer to have solid play. Looking at this deck... it's a Krynski design as everything else done by Edwall looks nothing like it. A barely passable pinball game that is often used for parts.

Update:
I played a copy with the updated boards from Pascal. There is more to this game with this newer technology and I like the pops and drops keeping the gameplay random and less boring than the copy I played before. Yes, fresh rubbers make a difference on a pinball game. The bonus x on this game in particular has made a big difference in my opinion of the scoring on this table. Lighting up the green inserts and getting to 5x is the way to go for big scores on the table. While there aren't many pinball games featuring themes that showcase women, this game sold 7600 games based on the popular tv show. I can't imagine this game sold well on it's playable features.

Boring game I think... nice backglass though... that's the best thing about this game.

The theme of this machine is its only saving grace. Not a very good machine overall. Pretty boring after about the first 1-2 games.
