Played at Pinfest 2023.

I was totally hyped to play Blast Off as it’s a top-rated EM with a great space theme. I’m unsure if I completely made a mistake on the rules, but I was disappointed by this one.

The main mechanism appears to be advancing to 10 to blast off, which is a great game mechanic. However, despite getting a reasonable score on the reels, the countdown kept going down - rather than up - for reasons I couldn’t understand, and I only blasted off once (and nothing seemed to happen when I did).

The centre target straight up the middle was easier to hit than I expected, which led to some disappointment, and I’d somehow expected the countdown rollovers to do something but, after aiming for them, they didn’t seem to. The bagatelle was less cool somehow than I’d expected going into the pin.

In short, I had a bit of a disappointing experience. I currently prefer Wizard, Nautilus, Bow and Arrow, and Aerobatics (at the same event).

Great add a ball game with a nice theme (space). They made a lot, so the price has stayed low. If you are looking for an EM to put in the lineup, it is a great one.

[copy and pasted from Apollo]

I can't in good conscience give this game less than a 6/6 in any category. If I were to penalize it for something it would be the small flippers, but that seems unfair. For my part, I choose to judge games based on the standards of the time, mostly. I like modern flippers, code, and art, but compared to other games of this era I think this game is just about as good as it gets.

Pros:
Art package.
Orbits on an EM!
Hitting the ball straight up the center and getting a bunch of rollovers and then the standup in the back is a great pinball moment.
Bagatelle board in the back, just for fun.

So I ask you, what's not to like?

An oldie but a goodie. A rather wide open field allows for those times when you see the ball rolling straight down the middle for an embarrassingly long time, but nice rollovers and tough targets make this one have replay value.

a fun game, for a few plays, Not much to shoot at here, lots of roll overs, a few stand up targets, not much, It is a Great looking machine and a cool theme, I like that. It is a nice machine, but not on my keeper list.

is one of the finest EM games ever created.

The Pros:
Great shots to shoot at, the 1-10 targets in the PF require at least 3 shots up the pf to light them all. Great action in the pops and the orbits are placed perfectly. Alternating lights on the orbits keep your shots up in the air. The bagatelle is implemented incredibly well into play. Art Steinholm laid down a brilliant art package, one of the best ever to be seen on a pinball game. Add-a-ball is always a challenge to your skills.

The Cons:
The only thing that would have made this table better, are inlanes. The bagatelle can make the difference between a good and a great scoring game. You can't really nudge it to add skill to what you get for points. I don't own one.

The Takeaway:
I will have one in my collection some day. One of Norm Clark's best.
