I realize this game is from 1980 and was probably quite unique for it's time but the two level playfield is not my cup of tea. It's either up or down and never really gets in a groove. Too easy to trigger multi ball. Not really a fan and just traded mine for something I actually enjoy playing.

Cutting edge for it's age. 2 level, voice, magna-save. Much quicker than I expected. Best looking game out there...mine sits between twilight zone and Creature and I think the graphics are incredible ( convert it to LEDs to make it come alive).

I acquired this game a few weeks ago, so here is my early impression and thoughts. The game design is very good (not great), although it is a bit limited by the split playfield. I like that there are 3 ramps to get back up top. The multiplier shot can feed toward the outlane, which I think was intended so it is an interesting risk/reward.

The multiball lock is a fun, feel good shot to loop around the bumper. It is very cool that you start either a 2 ball or 3 ball multiball and can initiate from the top or bottom playfield - makes for some interesting choices and strategy.

I really like the look of the machine, especially after I put colored LEDs under the inserts. The blue inserts and to a lesser extent the other colors look pale and lifeless with old clear bulbs and they look amazing with color LEDs - the playfield really comes alive! The backglass is a great one too.

The speech is very cool - especially for that era - the evil laugh is just awesome! The music / background sound is not as good though.

The magna save is a neat feature although hard to utilize, so not the best feature in my opinion. I like the last chance award for locked balls. Definitely some interesting features overall.

It's a fun, challenging machine and offers 3 ball multiball and can be bought for a reasonable prices - so a darn good value overall.

Way ahead of it's time but great game. One of the best early solid state games along with Space Shuttle and Black Hole. Great flow! It'd been nice to incorporate a jackpot into the game.

Interesting machine that will keep you on your toes. First game I ever played with the two-level playfield, and the first game I ever played with the magna-save. It takes awhile to get a feel for the shots, and to get used to properly using the magna-save.

Played a lot of games on this back in the early 90's when my boss bought one and put it in his basement. Was thrilled to find one this past summer that was in fantastic condition. I never get tired of playing this machine and am always up to 'challenge the Black Knight again!'

Make sure you set the lock lighting to hard!

Great layout, great feel. The rules are a bit basic, sadly. Wish there was a jackpot or something to go for in multiball, flailing around only is fun for so long

Black Knight is one of the great WMS Sys 7 games (Solar Fire, Jungle Lord, and Pharaoh being the other three) that just feels like a machine made for pinball fans. I can't say I use the Magna save very often, but there is something satisfying about racking up a huge bonus on a 3-ball multiball.

Is it just me or is this game kind of boring? It's cool that it talks, but I never understood the hype. Maybe I just don't get it but definitely not one of my favorites.

The "Music" In this game is 3 sounds at different tones that repeat infinitely and it gets annoying very fast, the game field is interesting with 2 levels but I always forget there are flippers at the top since they are a bit hard to see. The audio of the knight talking is rather hard to under stand some times and just doesn't add anything to the game.

there is little space to use on either play field and feels very cramped, especially on the lower level. the sounds are not very good either and way to repetitive for my liking. I just feel this is an ok game but I just can't really get to liking it.

An important milestone in pinball history.

Most people are aware of the features of the double level playfield, Magnosave, speech improvements, and Multiball, but you have look beyond the design.

One of the first games that pushed the pinball world into a quarter a play, along with games like Black Hole.
Revitalized the pinball industry that was dying due to early video games like Pacman.

Artwork by Tony Ramunni is of critical importance.
It set the bar very high for future games.
Gameplay is rock tight even today, and multiball is fast.
Sound was very good for its age.
Music is basically more repetitive tones, which most turn off.
The one thing that really stands out in my mind is the playfield inserts.
They were very special as they were shaped like "gems" not the "starfire" ones that are common today.
Not even the reproduced playfields use them, as they have not been available for many years.
The bad part is most original playfield inserts are extremely heat shrunken.

The last machine I owned was a BK: LE with the upgraded trough switches, extra decal, and a few other small changes. In games of this age, always check the cabinet glue for delamination.

People should never overlook machines that offer solid gameplay after 35+ years.

A great game, everyone is attracted to. The timed targets and the magna-save make this one game to play over and over.

Absolutely love this game. My favorite early solid state. Has many advanced features for its release. One I could play over and over. The only machine I regret getting rid of. Will have to have one again.

What can I say? I spent many many hours and allowance quarters playing this in my youth. An evolution in pinball when it was released, Black Knight helped to solidify Steve Ritchie's place as the number 1 pinball designer of all time.

The original 1980 Black Knight is one of the greatest games ever designed. I own 10 pins at two of different locations, two are Black Knights. For some reason I still can't explain this game will have you playing it until 2am on a weekday.
2 &3 Ball Multiball, Speach,Four Flippers, Upper Playfield and Magna Save make this an amazing machine from 1980. The best feature nobody seems to mention is if you play a multi player game the high score player gets a 30 second multiball that allows you to keep firing the balls if you drain them! A must have for any collection, good luck finding one in good condition.

My dear Lord, Black Knight. I don't know what it is, and I don't know if I'm the only one, but this table is wickedly difficult to try and get a feel for. My advice for this table is... well, I don't have any good advice. The two keys for this table, as with most, is to get the multiplier as high as possible, and activate multi-ball. The thing about the multiplier on this table is that it's pretty difficult to hit at first. It took a number of plays on this table before I got a feel for how to hit it, and even still I can't get them consistently. Another thing that makes this table difficult is that it's hard to gauge where the ball's coming down to the bottom flippers when coming from the top -- it happens so fast, it's really hard to tell where the ball's going. It took me several games (albeit with a bunch of restarts) to even score a million on this table, though my last was roughly 2.3 million. Of all the tables in Pinball Arcade Season 1, this is one that will take me some of the most time to feel comfortable with. As for the other aspects of the table, it's not all that impressive, though it was responsible for a lot of "firsts" for pinball. The sounds are droning and repetitive, and the table itself doesn't look very spectacular. It's a decent table, but it's mostly only memorable -- for me at least -- because it's unrelenting. I've left the sound scores out of this review, as it dragged the rating way down.

I still remember spotting this game in the dark corner of Aladdin’s Castle. Never seen anything like it and it floored me.
I’m pretty sure I gave ¾ of my evening’s tokens to the Black Knight challenging him again and again.
Holds up very well and I play it every time I make a trip over to FunSpot.
Would love to own one.

Love the Bonus Ball as a reward to the Winner of a Multi Player game
