This is a dual review for Astro/Star Trek (1971). Both are add-a-ball versions of 4 Square (1971). Astro and Star Trek share the same playfield art including saying Star Trek right in the middle, it's just the backglasses that are different. Yeah, a bit confusing. The game has no relation to the TV show but I'm sure Gottlieb didn't choose that name by accident. Although, it's only the Italian export that's called Star Trek officially.

Anyway, it's a solid if standard shooter for the time. Very simple rules, spell S-T-A-R-T-R-E-K basically, and that plus the two extra star targets light the two Wow targets for bonus points. Extra balls awarded at 20K and 40K or 30/50 depending how the game is set up. Hits a nice sweet spot in difficulty, hardly impossible to get all 10 key lights lit, but you're not going to do it every game.

Typical Gottlieb wedge head. Nothing real special here.

My second favorite AAB that I own. Great player, love the backglass and the space theme!

Loved the art and theme, but the game play was so-so. Boring. Not much going on. A few stand up targets and roll-overs. Wanted to keep it in my collection but got tired of playing it quickly.

Astro is the Add-a-aball version of 4 Square. This game is a player that will sneak up on you and make you wonder if that incredible game you just scored was truly earned... or was it just pin-lucky?

The Pros:
Another deceptively simple layout with simple but rarely easy goals to accomplish. What do you expect? It's a game from Master K! Eeeety Beeety Fleeepers make sure that you make the most of every opportunity to get that ball where you want it to be. Hi-Tap it if you dare! The artwork package on the BG is great and the art on the PF is a big step up from 4 Square.

The Cons:
This game must be tuned or "dialed" just right for steepness, fresh rubbers and flipper strength to keep the balance of this game's rules and play where it should be.

The Takeaway:
This game gives as good as it gets. People complaining that this game is too easy have not set up this game as it should be. (pssst, try it steeper) If you can find a well loved copy of this deck. Play it. Now.

My favorite Add A Ball pin; just the right balance and ease of earning extra balls, not too easy but not too hard.
Beautiful BG artwork
