It depends on the exact application. It could make a very big difference.
I wouldn't be substituting like that for zeners.

Ok, started getting a missing segment on master, display 1 and 2 and found toasty resistor and noticed the diode had been little hot but still ok. Local Radio shack has the 4742 but not the 40. I will just leave it.
