Hi All

I'm in the process of restoring a machine that uses Zaccaria parts but it's not really a Zaccaria.... I hope I'm welcome here!

The machine is AppleTime Thunder Man.

I'm in the process of trying to track down a donor cabinet which ideally should be a Zaccaria Gen2 cabinet. Being on the other side of the world (Australia) this is not such an easy task, so I was wondering, if I can't track down a donor cabinet do I just build one, but I haven't been able to find any dimensions for a Zaccaria Gen2 cabinet anywhere. Does anyone here have this information handy?

I was also hoping that if you have a Zaccaria Gen2 in your collection and machines from any other manufacturers, is there any cabinets from other manufacturers that are identical or close to the dimensions of a Zaccaria Gen2?

Does anyone here have this information handy?
I was also hoping that if you have a Zaccaria Gen2 in your collection and machines from any other manufacturers, is there any cabinets from other manufacturers that are identical or close to the dimensions of a Zaccaria Gen2?

I've been looking further into this, a fellow pinball enthusiast recommended I measure the playfield for Thunder Man and compare the size of that playfield to other manufacturers and go from there. So, I did just that and established Thunder Man's playfield is 20.25" x 42.00".

Comparing with other manufacturers I came up with the following list of possible candidates.
Alvin G SS Standard 20.25" x 42.00"
Bally SS Standard 20.25" x 42.00"
Game Plan SS Standard 20.25" x 42.00"
Gottlieb System 1 Standard 20.25" x 42.00"
Gottlieb System 80 Standard 20.25" x 42.00"
Stern Electronics SS Standard 20.25" x 42.00"
Williams System 1-11 Standard 20.25" x 42.00"
Zaccaria SS Standard 20.25" x 42.00"

Now this does not mean that all of these cabinets will work, I'm well aware of that, there may have been different designs and styles that don't match the look I need for Thunder Man, So I went around looking at a few pictures of each manufacturer within the 80s.

The one that really stood out the most was the Williams machines at around 1982 through to 1988, just on visual looks alone it looks closest. Plus I've also read that Zaccaria Lock down bars and receivers directly interchange with Williams.

Would anyone here have a Zaccaria Gen2 and a Williams machine from this era that they can do a quick comparison with measurements? Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Ive attached 3 examples of Williams machines from the 80s and 3 example images of Thunder Man.

Hi dvs626,
My TM has the same size as GTB System 80's. Considering that Apple Time stole the playfield design from GTBs Bounty Hunter, I would say that a GTB cabinet and head would work. I can't measure mine right now because I'm in a bar. When I sober up tomorrow I will send you the measurements from mine.
I'll compare the lockdown bars from Wms. Bad Cats and GTB Hot Shots as well.
Can I have another one of these, please?
Oh, sorry, that wasn't meant for you.

Love it, thanks Alan I would appreciate that. It would help me immensely to find other donor cab options here in Australia.
Enjoy the drinks!

Quoted from frisbez:

I just compared my Pinball Champ to an Alien Poker. The lower cabinet measurements were identical. The heads, however, were not. Pinball Champ's head was slightly smaller overall. If you need exact measurements I'm happy to provide.

Cheers frisbez, that's not too bad really, I could probably work something out with the heads.
If you could provide exact measurements for both the Pinball Champ and the Alien Poker that would be awesome. It will give me an idea of what type of modifications I might need to make.

Conveniently posting right below Ollulanus and his restored Time Machine...

I have a question about a Time Machine!
During my search to find a donor cabinet for my Thunder Man I may have come across an opportunity to buy a Zaccaria Time Machine, I've been told its complete but rough. Depending on its condition it may still be a candidate for a restore rather than stripping it for my Thunder Man. I'd hate to ruin a good machine that can be brought back to life. I'm still waiting on some photos, and I'll probably look it over in person as well, but I wanted to ask what are some of the common issues to look out for on a Zaccaria Time Machine? An what would one expect to pay for one that currently is not running?

#3153 8 months ago

Ok so it turns out it was not a Time Machine, looks like its a Zaccaria Robot instead. Looks fairly complete from what I can tell, can anyone tell me the common things to look out for on these?

im aware the backglass is incorrect

Don't suppose anyone has a Zaccaria Robot Backglass spare?
If I end up purchasing it would be nice to know I can secure a backglass, not sure id find one easily.

I'm waiting on the inside photos, he doesn't have the key so he will need to drill the lock out to get those for me.
So, based on what you see what would you pay for this machine in the current market?
Taking into account the mismatch backglass.

#3163 8 months ago

Does anyone have an actual picture of the thermoform backbox plastic for Robot? I can't seem to find a picture of that item alone.
I'm curious to see how detailed the artwork is on that.

Are all thermoform backbox plastic's the same shape different artwork? curious if a new one can be made from a mold and painted. I'm sure it sounds easier than what it would actually be.

#3165 8 months ago

Cheers luvthatapex2 i didnt come across that one.
Expected something quite different to that so there goes that idea haha

#3168 8 months ago

Anything's possible with hard work. I'll let you all know when I get the extra pics of inside of the cab, and how negotiations go.
Thanks for everyone's advice! much appreciated.

Quoted from joetechbob:

Seems a shame to destroy a magic castle insert. Perhaps it would be better as a first step to put out a WTB ad and see what you can find.

I don't think I'm going to go down the route of destroying the Magic Castle insert anyway, I'm of the same opinion that it should be saved.
I want to look at other options to recreate it first. I've worked with fiberglass before, I wondered if this could be a suitable option to recreate the piece.

Anyone who has a Robot in their collection is there any chance of getting a higher resolution picture of the thermoform plastic front on? (Maybe a few angle shots as well would be helpful) I have an idea that might work to get similar or close enough graphics on it also.

Hey guys, finally made the deal on that Zaccaria Robot and it has now taken its place on the opposite side of the room from my Bell Games Cobra.
Looks like its going to need a really good clean. Lots of work to do but I'm super happy to have it in my collection.

Congrats on the new addition.
Awesome machine, that deserves saving! Can't wait to see the "after" pictures.

Already getting stuck into it, 100% it deserves saving.
It was really dirty but thankfully there is a good playfield and plastics under all that mess.

With a Magic Castle backglass/insert?

Yeh, unfortunately
I'm going to try work something out, not concerned about the backglass, it's the insert that I'm worried about.
Thats another days problem anyway haha

Much appreciated! You also helped me out with my Bell Games Cobra!
I may need some assistance, my apron is too far gone so I will need to reapply a decal after repainting, have you got a good quality scan or a clear high-resolution photo of it?
Also, the insert is there any chance of a better picture of that with the machine turned off? I'm going to attempt to recreate this.

Some progress shots from today's efforts.

Some parts were in a sorry state so I had some of them sand blasted, these items will be painted. Any areas that the ball hits for example the 180 I will leave the inside unpainted.

The guides and other metals were sanded to get a nice brushed metal look. I went this route because I didn't want to paint the guides, but they were pretty bad.

The Apron was too far gone and pitted from the rust, it was sand blasted and primer applied. It will get a light sanding before getting the blue colour back.

The shooter lane guide i have a before and after photo, I thought I was going to have a problem with this but it turns out it was ok in the end, what a difference!

Sprayed the parts that were too far gone they are looking great, funny enough you can't see most of them on the playfield because most are hidden but at least I feel confident they will last rust free for many years to come.

Got the apron sprayed but decided the colour is way too light so that is pending another re-spray while I continue to work on the decals.

Pretty much all done on cleaning and restoring the rest of the playfield and it looks great.

Quoted from Mikespinball:

Does anyone have a set of pop bumper caps for a Magic Castle? All three of mine are broken with no tabs? PM me let me know,
Thanks…..Mike
[quoted image]

Why not make them Mike?
Purchase the blank Red caps https://www.marcospecialties.com/pinball-parts/10434-R
Then using waterslide decals print the art and place onto the new caps.
I did a quick video of this when I was recreating my Bell Games Cobra caps.

After the image is transferred onto the bumper cap, I carefully heated it up in the oven for 15 minutes at around 150 degrees Celsius. I was standing by the oven the whole time to ensure it wasn't too hot. (You dont want to see those caps melting!)

Quoted from Mikespinball:

Interesting, I’ll have to look into that. Thanks for the tip.

No problems, can be a handy thing for these hard to find caps!

On another note...

Zaccaria Robot owners I have some files to share with you, I'm not certain if they can be used but on the off chance that a 3d file can be exported to help someone reproduce a part they have been searching for to complete their Robot then hopefully this will be useful for you.

How was this done you ask...
Using my phone and an app called Polycam (You get 6-8 free scans... can't remember exactly how many)
I would be forever grateful if another Zaccaria Robot owner was able to perform this very same process with the purple insert that sits behind the backglass. I won't hold my breath waiting for this but if you do have the time and the means to do it and contribute another part that someone else might be able to use please do share it for all.

Thanks All!

New colour went on the apron and I'm much happier with the result, its close enough for me.
Just finished applying the waterslide decal paper to the apron and it looks great. The colours are a little bit dull but its clean, its tidy and it's no longer rusty!

Quoted from swampwiz:

I think the part to get from Hungary to Newark, NJ was about $350, so it hasn't gone up that much.
My problem now is that I am trying to get a Zacc backglass shipped from Sweden, and the shipping is like $300! Surely, there must be a cheaper way (it wouldn't bother me if it takes a long time).

Why not grab the backglass from here and have it printed locally? It's certainly a cheaper option, won't be as "original" looking but if it works for you.

Wow that looks fantastic and Robot is such a worthy title to restore. Fun game. This is no disrespect to your restoration as I was an owner too, but hopefully someone makes decals for the body of these games as every robot I have seen has faded artwork. Looking forward to seeing your game lit up in all its glory!

You mean something like this...
I scanned my cabinet recently and had some friends in the vpin world go to town and clean up the graphics and this is the final result.

Ill likely be doing the same with my Magic Castle eventually when I get around to it.
I hope it's useful to other Zaccaria owners.

I'm not certain on how I'm going to use these yet on my cabinet but mine definitely needs to be redone.

I have actual screens to rescreen these cabinets. I've done about 7 of them so far. I usually don't do the white webbing. I like doing the cabinets in a high metallic silver. I have inks that are spot on matches of the original. Slightly transparent too.

Do you know the actual color code for the cabinet by any chance Neo?
