Well I just recently joined the club as I just picked up a Farfalla for free! Called the number in the Craigslist ad and discussed the machine and it's condition. No price in the ad and asked what he wanted. He stated that the ad was posted by a friend for him and said " just come and get it as I want it out of my garage before I take it to the dump!" Shocked I said I'll be there tomorrow and pick it up. It was already late in the day.
In all the years I have been collecting pinball machines I have never been offered a "Free" come and get it machine. It appears to be in overall great condition except that the back glass was cracked/broken by the movers he stated. Excited to get this one up and working!

Looking for a Zaccaria Farfalla Owners manual. Just need the manual as I did get the electrical diagrams manual with the machine.
Let me know if you have one and its price.
Thanks,
Mike

#2213 3 years ago

Thank you for this as I did too find this off the Internet Pinball Data Base. Its poorly copied as alot of the wording is cut off. That's why I always like an original manual if possible. Thanks again for the referral it will work for the time being, but still looking.

Been working on my Farfalla. Have installed LED's in and under the playfield so far and did different Titan colored rubber for the playfield. Looks good so far.

Next thing, I am never happy with the original GI lighting in a machine and always like adding more lights to the playfield if possible. So, working on installing more light sockets to the playfield. Will show updated pictures when finished.

Also I upgraded the blue and orange target posts to double rubber posts due to the damage to the original posts (some were completely broken) and the amount of hits that happens once the targets are down.

Quoted from mjg417:

What happened to your taf project

I finished it. Not soon after had a guy in Tacoma Wa want it for his 50th birthday. Told him crazy $ hoping he would go away. His wife then called me and I then told her 13k and she said yes. Delivered it and bought a one owner Cactus Canyon that only had 70 plays on it and a Monster Bash with the $.

Quoted from gianfri:

Looks really nice!
You motivate me to start working on my farfalla.
It is waiting for me since months now ...

Quoted from pinballinreno:

I wish my playfield was a nice as that!
Beautiful game.

Thanks guys, just about finished with the playfield. Will update pictures here in the next day or so. So keep tuned in!

#2236 3 years ago

Here is the finished playfield. Added about 20+ more LED's. Some of you may not like all the colors in the GI, but I do colors along with white. I think it looks good.

Working on the head today. Wanted to remove the neon tube without breaking it. Went and talked to a neon bender yesterday on how to remove the rubber connector where the neon wires are connected as it's burnt on. He told me to remove it very carefully and use a small screwdriver, but most of the time they break the glass neon tube. I asked him if he ever used WD40 to help loosen the rubber connector. He said no, but give it a try.
I sprayed a small amount of WD40 on the connection last night. Today I cut the tube with a new raserblade knife and pried on the rubber connector a little at a time. They both worked free and was able to remove the neon tube without any breakage. I think the WD40 did help with removing the burnt rubber boot.

Also while I was at the neon bender company he gave me two new boots. Finished with the head LED upgrade, cleaning and neon removal/install.

Quoted from CaptainNeo:

neon looks good. i'd lose the color LED's in the back. you are losing a ton of detail in the art, turning into color mush.

You are probably right, just having some fun. Easy to change out if I want.

Quoted from pinballinreno:

Did you see the post I made about LED NEON Tube?
I absolutely love it on my game. More light with less glare, and you can change colors, brightness, make it flash 10 different ways etc, if you want lol.
The biggest plus is, no more worrying about breaking the tube, ever!

Yes, I did see your LED neon tube post. Great upgrade. My neon tube is working at this time, might change it out to your idea if it quits.

Need some tech help, have been working on my Farfalla. Machine does boot up and play, but was having sound problems with some sounds and then no sounds with buzzing/humming noises coming out of the speakers. Emailed David @ Zaccaria pinball, he suggested to replace the caps on the sound board. I replaced all small blue round caps, there are 7 of them. Re-installed sound board with no sound once turned power on, but F2 5amp fuse blows right away and machine will not boot up. Did I mess something up? Or is there a different issue? I did re-unplug the sound board completely replace the F2 5amp fuse and machine will boot up and play again. Any suggestions?
Thanks Mike

Quoted from pinballinreno:

Sounds like you will have to re-visit the work you did and check for something wrong.

Quoted from CaptainNeo:

make sure you didn't flip a cap around so the positive is the wrong way. Is it only the PS board that has the + printed wrong or do the sound boards have that issue too?

Yes, will have to recheck my work, I thought I did. Possibly I may have did in one of the caps, you never know. I did take pictures of all the caps prior to removal just to make sure I have follow up pictures of what was there in the beginning. Have learned this trait do to in the past looking at what I removed and said to myself what did it look like before???
Thanks guys for your input, I'll look into it tomorrow and follow up and let you know.

#2246 3 years ago

Update: Sometimes you do the stupid things and that is what I did on this. In my rush to try the sound board out after repairs, I pulled it out again today and saw that I had forgot to clip the long leads off the last cap I installed. No wonder the fuse shorted out right away. Anyhow once I clipped them off and re-installed the sound board it works fine. Lesson learned, take your time and double check your work before installing and testing. Just glad that no damage happened to the board.

Congratulations on your new Magic Castle. It's the next one on my list I would like to acquire.
Just finishing my Farfalla, good luck on the progress. One thing you might consider is the posts behind the blue and orange drop targets get hammered quite a bit. Some of mine were completely destroyed, I changed mine out to double blue and double orange to help with eliminating further damage.

Here are a few pictures of the double posts.

The only thing I am still going to do is that the original decals that came off the door are in good shape yet and will take them to my print shop guy and have them reproduced. He has done this before many times for my Bally/Williams machines.

Quoted from FiatsRUs:

I am reviving a power supply from a Magic Castle for a friend and I need some advice on the two 10,000 uf, 16v filter caps. They each have four legs, which I have not seen before. Can they be replaced with a two-legged snap-in capacitor and if so, how would they be oriented on the board? Is the black stripe on the existing capacitor negative? Positive?
Also, regarding the 100 uf, 350v filter cap in the HV section; can it be replaced with a 150uf 350v cap that I have on hand for Bally power supplies? The HV sections appear to be very similar.
Thanks.

The two 10,000 uf 16v caps replacement I think this was answered previously in this thread on page 21 here: https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/zaccaria-pinball-owners-club-all-welcome/page/21#post-4488778. Its on a Farfalla, but the power supply I think are the same and/or similar.

Also changing out the 100 uf 350v to a 150 uf 350v should be OK too. I just know you can't go down in value, but up is OK.

Quoted from StratDoc:

Just picked up my first Zaccaria - a terrific looking Farfalla. It is awesome looking. A couple of quick questions for the group as this pin is completely foreign to me.
1) I cannot get it to go into test mode at all.
2) The sole red insert near the ramp is badly chipped. It is odd that these are not a solid red plastic. Can I replace with the an opaque insert of the same size.
3) one of the flipper bats was replaced with a solid black bat. I saw where seigcraft made replacement translucent bats for Zaccaria pins. Anyone used them?
4) The right outhole lane flipper is not working.
5) The third and fourth digits are missing on each display. Moved the display connectors around and no change so it is not display specific. Any thoughts? I am David Gersic said ship him the CPU and a display.
6) And, a general game question. The top yellow drop targets sometime reset and sometimes they do not. Is there a specific rule about when the targets reset, or do I have another issue to address.
Super stoked to be part of this unique pin owners group.

First welcome to the club! I too have not long ago joined this club too with a Farfalla. I have been repairing/refurbishing Bally/Williams machines since about 2004 when I really got into the hobby. Zaccaria machines are a bit of a different breed, but what I did since I was new to working on Zaccaria, I took the time to read through all the posts in this thread. I know there's alot of pages, but was worth my time as it helped me just get familiar with the games, issues that others had and some interesting quirks about them. Also I would watch a Farfalla in play on YouTube as this has also been helpful to me on diagnostic repairs.

1) You can get into the test/programing mode by switching the on/off SW4 on the CPU board. Once switched the machine with start beep, beep, beeping, then activate the momentary switch on the coin door to move through each test/program. Switch SW4 back when finished. Would also check out David Gersic Zaccaria web site found here: http://www.zaccaria-pinball.com/ as there is alot of helpful information on the Zaccaria machines.
2) A number of mine inserts too are cracked, but not bad enough to replace. I have seen this on a number of pictures of Farfalla machines. It appears a common issue. I would just replace whichever way works best for you.
3) Never have bought from them, but I have not heard or seen if anyone else does replacement flipper bats, David did at one time, but has since sold out. Anyone else?
4)Would check connections to and from the coil, clean/replace coil sleeve, coil parts and make sure it moves freely. Also check out lane switch is working. Note: for this flipper to work, the lane light needs to be lit and you only get "one flip". Also can check if flipper works in the coil test mod.
5) Displays only work in sequence. That is you can't move the ribbon cable around to really test the displays. If you already talked to David, then I would follow his recommendations.
6) All targets reset at the beginning of each ball and/or if they are all dropped (each color bank) during ball in play with the exception on the last ball if the last ball is the timed ball. The drop targets stay down on whatever one's you hit until you take them all out (color) and/or if the ball ends and are reset on next ball in play.

Hope this helps answer some of your questions. Again welcome to the club and enjoy your new machine!......Mike

Hello Zaccaria owners, I recently purchased a Devil Riders pinball machine. It's missing the metal lock/bracket for the head back glass. Do any of you have a spare you would sell me? Note: picture is of my Farfalla showing what I need.
Let me know,
Thanks Mike

Need some help here Zaccaria owners. I have a Farfalla that I am continuing having issues with the sound board. Have been in contact with David Gersic (he was the only person that it seems that did board repairs). He recommend replacement of all the caps which I did, but still continue to have sound issues. Sent the board to him for repair, but he is having some personal family issues and has since sent the sound board back to me un-repaired. It appears he will no longer be doing board repairs, so here is my question.

Is there anyone here is the US that will take on any Zaccaria board repairs (sound, driver, CPU, etc.)? David did recommend contacting John's Jukes in British Columbia, but would rather deal with a reliable source here in the states.
Let me know......Mike

#2405 2 years ago

Okay guys, I am asking again is there a reliable repair source for Zaccaria pinball board(s) repairs here in the US? I can't believe there's not one due to the many machines collector's own. Your replys would be appreciated.

Johns Jukes is a legitimate repair place.
I would definitely contact them.

Okay, just thought if there were anyone else in the US. Will give them a call.......Thanks

Expanding my Zaccaria pinball collection this weekend (now have 3 Zaccaria machines) and purchased a Magic Castle from Pinsider stumptown in Portland Oregon. Excited to add this unique machine to my collection. Machine is in overall good condition and just needs a good cleaning/shop job.

Quoted from INSATANSSEAT:

They must call you Lucky Mike!

Possibly so.
When I want a pitickler title in the past I would post a want ad on Craigslist, Facebook and/or here on Pinside. This does work sometimes.
I find now that most titles you want are owned by collectors, so I use the Pinside map and search for the title in question in my area. I would rather drive and pick up a machine then have it shipped if possible. I then PM Pinsider's that have the title I am looking for and ask if they would be interested in selling. Some don't, some don't answer at all, some say maybe and/or I'll get back to you, but I have been lucky with this process and have purchased many machines I own this way.
Lucky, but really creative buying.

Glad to see it in the hands of an appreciator with time to work on it. Was gonna be a long time before I ever got around to giving it the care it needed. Looking forward to seeing its transformation in your hands

Argh! All this talk about sound board problems! I went to play a game of Clown this morning and the sound was digitally distorted. I rebooted the game, same thing. Correct sounds, just a little muddy/garbled. Reboot again, NO SOUND
I pulled the board, reseated the chips, checked for any visual burns, etc. Still no sound upon another try.
Any tips on what to check? Recap the board maybe?
How’s that repro board coming, gianfri ?

I had many issues with my Farfalla sound board, but most sounds were working with the exception of back ground sounds. I recapped the board per suggestions of other Pinsiders. This didn't really help, but found this thread on Pinside that really helped me and solved my sound issues.
Check it out:

Quoted from CaptainNeo:

after you fix the main line fuse. You also have to probably fix and repin the main power connector on the bottom right corner of the PS board. They are always toasty and need to be redone with new trifucate molex pins and header.

Would also recommend checking the fuse clips on the PS board too. They are often too in need of replacement.

Quoted from Tokkentakker:

I'm needing some suggestions on how to fix my Magic Castle's sound board. Generally the board is working very well with nice loud clear tones but I'm missing about 1/3 of my sounds...primarily background sounds. I'm running a new Pinball Solutions 1B1165/Evo MPU (fantastic product) and have installed new ribbon cable to sound board. I've also replaced the AY3-8910 and both 6821PIA chips with new. I'm thinking of replacing the 3 EPROMs but they look to be freshly installed and labeled. Any ideas on what I could try next? Thanks.

Take a look at this thread especially the 2nd to last post as I was having trouble with my sound board on my Farfalla and replacing the MF10CN chip fixed mine. Good luck...Mike

Any luck sourcing one of these locks? Picked up a Magic Castle -- haven't unwrapped it yet, but was told the bg lock is missing.

Never did yet. Have been working with a Pinsider that had stripped a Devil Riders and gave him a list of parts I wanted that included the lock. He is very slow with communication and still waiting for a reply.

#2724 1 year ago

Have talked/texted with CaptionNeo who has many Zaccaria machines. He told me about 1/2 of his are missing the head bracket and lock. I guess many had got lost over the years. It's a very unique lock and bracket.

That would be awesome! Thanks!
I haven't been able to find a photo of one or any measurements and mine (and it seems several others) is missing. If it's not too complex, I may be able to model it in cad and see if it's possible to 3d print something strong enough to hold a cam lock in place.

Is this what you are looking for? This is in my Farfalla and my Devil's Rider is missing one. Have been looking for one over a year now. Talked with CaptainNeo who has a number of Zaccaria machines and he stated that he also is missing a number of locks on his machines. So if you make a replacement count me in for one.

I already PM him and took the lock out of my Farfalla and sent many pictures with measurements. Sorry, should have posted on this thread that we were in contact. Also he has already made a preliminary diagram.

If anyone is interested in beta testing the lock from above PM me. Thinking of building a handful to send out for test fit & function beyond Magic Castle for those that are missing locks.
Note that I'm still working through the finished look on it. Will be making the exposed piece have a radius to better fit the cut out on the lock side and have an idea to try for giving it a metallic finish on the exposed portion.

Count me in. I have a Devil Riders and a Farfalla can test it in.

Well, got back to working on my Devil Riders. Put most of the playfield parts back on. Before I finish installing plastics etc, I like to add extra LEDs to the playfield GI's to help brighten the playfield up. Got most of it done, just need to look at the lower section as its a bit dark yet. Overall I think it's turned out great. Your thoughts?

I like a bit of color in my life. I like to mix my machine's up a bit with color coordinating GI bulbs with the plastics above them along with cool white. Have done this on all my machine's. Most people really like what I do. I can appreciate all white if you want, but that's why we are all different, it's your choice, but appreciate your insight.

Need some help. Working on my Devil Riders and trying to get it 100% working. Have an issue with the left ramp center drop target, left rear bottom stationary target and right inside roll-over lane not working. Comon color wire going to all these points is a purple/brown. Have chased this wire to the CPU board connector CN10. Checked wire continuity and checked out good. Chasing further in to a chip 40097bpc cmos ic 3 state non inverter buffer. This chip appears to be my problem. Can't find this chip. Anyone have an idea for a cross reference and/or any idea if this is my issue? Any help would be appreciated.

Looking at the 4000 series wiki and datasheets, the 4503 looks like a suitable drop-in replacement for a 40097.

Quoted from gianfri:

I confirm, the CD4503 perfectly replaces the 40097

Thanks guys! Appreciate your help will order needed chip.

Need help/advice. Just about finished with my Devil Riders and another issue popped up. Just been testing with player one only and the game has been working well until a friend stopped by and said lets try two players. Well once the start button was pushed for player one the game started as it has been, but when pushed for player two it froze up reset the drop targets again and locked up. You then can shoot the ball into play and once it hits the ball drain hole the machine comes back to life to player one. This repeats if you push for more players.
Haven't read in this thread yet of this issue happening. Any suggestions as to what, where to begin fixing this problem. Your thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.

#3034 1 year ago

You are the one I hoped that would have some kind of answer for me. I am at my wits end on this issue.

I have tried two more different interface boards that do work and have got the same results once a two player game is started. So I feel the issue is not with the interface board, which I didn't think it was anyhow.

Tried back tracing the 1,2, 3 and 4 player wires off the back board which do go to the interface board first, but traced one wire trace to the CPU board which in turn goes to a number of chips on the CPU board. It this point I would be just replacing chips just in hope that I found the correct one.

Is there anyone that would have suggestions (other than a new replacement CPU) that would help me fix this issue would be appreciated.
Thanks....Mike

After thinking more about my issue it's like after you start player one and then try to add player two the machine acts like you are starting over again for player one and not adding another player if this helps anyone. Hope this makes sence.

Quoted from CaptainNeo:

I had a similar issue with Scramble when I got it. When I tried to start a second player, the game would reset as if you just turned it on.
turned out the roms were made so you had to bypass the watchdog circuit TP7 on the MPU board. TP7 has a bigger pad that is actually cut into 2 sections. For scramble. I had to arch the 2 sections. But zacs use them as 2 pieces. Maybe someone arched the 2 sections and it's messing with the zac roms? if it is open. Try arching the 2 sections as see if the 2 player game starts then.
The white wire going to the MPU board runs the watchdog circuit. I have seen people remove this wire. Never knew why, but might be a way to bypass problems like you are having.

Quoted from gianfri:

Mike, I was thinking of your problem and reading back all you wrote I was wondering if the behavior is not just correct.
It is normal that if you modify the number of players you are not playing.
If you add players after having started the game you just reset the current game and all stops.
Once you finish to select the number of players you can launch the ball and start the multiplayer game.
If points are scored before you select more players then the machine stops and needs you to send the ball in the out hole to start it again.
If this is the behavior then you have no problems, it's just normal.

Well I found the problem and I think you will be surprised as I was and its not something that you would normally find.
First off I want to thank everyone that helped with suggestions and believe me I tried them all.
Had a pinball friend/tech come over last night. We reviewed all that I had tried/done to find the problem. He brought his eprom/rom burner, so he burned new rom's and we then gave those a try with no success.
Talked further what to do next. He suggested that since I own a Farfalla that's in working condition and the CPU has the same jumpers as the Devil Riders we decided to switch CPU boards and give that a try.
Once roms were switched the Devil Riders CPU board worked correctly in Farfalla machine and the CPU board from Farfalla had the same results/issue I have been having in the Devil Riders! WTF! We were both puzzled.
We then started checking other items on the machine and found that the Farfalla had only one set of contacts for the start button and the Devil Riders had two! Upon further investigation someone took out the service button on the Devil Riders and changed it to a leaf switch and added to the back side of the start button! Now it makes sense on how and why the game was acting the way it was.
We both felt like we had success hi fived and quit working on my machine as I will fix it tomorrow and moved to playing some pinball in my game room!

Okay just finished my Devil Riders machine up. Some of you may or may not like what I did, but haven't seen anyone do this before to a Zaccaria machine, so let me be the first. I sent the legs, side rails and lock down bar off and had them powder coated to a blue color similar to the blue on the cabinet. I also added lighted flipper buttons. All in all I think it turned out great.

Looks great. I love the powder coat.

Thank you! Appreciate it. It was a fun refurbish restoration. Also having fun finely getting to play the game.

I just brought home a Time Machine and was thinking I might want to powder it after I touch the cab up. This is a vote in favor, looks great!

Thank you! Appreciate it. Devil Riders was a fun project to bring back alive. Working on these Zaccaria pinball machines is quite a learning experience. They are sure fun to play.

Question to Zaccaria generation 2 machine owners. What are you using for the battery back up on the CPU board?

#3069 1 year ago

Thanks guys for your suggestions. Appreciate it.

Turned on my just finished Devil Riders last night to play. Machine booted and went into normal mode. Only thing was the high score and ball/game credit was not showing and/or switching back and forth as it normally does.
Machine would not take any additional credits or start a game. Tried reseating all connections to the CPU with no changes. Also tried going into the diagnostics which it would not let me enter once switching switch 4 on the CPU. I am guessing here is the cause a bad battery on the CPU?
Any other thoughts as what could be the cause?

#3081 1 year ago
Quoted from gianfri:

It could be IC38 CA3081 which is dead and doesn't get the inputs on the switch matrix.
Just one idea...

Thank you for your insight. Funny though the next day turned it on again and all is well. It booted up and ball in play/game credit/high score display worked correctly. Game took credits and played as it should.
It also did again last night. So, hopefully will continue working, but at least I'll have something to review if it happens again.
Again appreciate the help,

Mike

Ok so it turns out it was not a Time Machine, looks like its a Zaccaria Robot instead. Looks fairly complete from what I can tell, can anyone tell me the common things to look out for on these?
im aware the backglass is incorrect

I’d say you got a Robot attacking a Magic Castle. LOL

Started working on my magic castle today. It used to work, but quit working some time ago and I just pushed it in back in the shop and thought I’d get to it another day.
I replaced all connectors and header pins on the power board. I also, fixed any fuse clips that needed to be replaced.
Upon power up, the machine would not boot. Checking power at all test points on the power board. TP4 tested about half of the voltage that should be there, which was about 2.5 V AC.
Check incoming voltage at the fuses F3, which should be about 6.5 V. AC was hardly anything there. Further checking on this fuse and disconnecting everything. The voltage is actually at F3 with the fuse out but is basically gone when the fuse is reinstalled.
Checking the schematics and it appears that I have a bridge rectifier that probably needs to be replaced. It is a 50 V 25 amp bridge. What I have is a 35 V 200 W that I use in my 90s Bally/Wiliams machines. Am I OK to replace the one that’s 50 V 25 A with my 35V 200 W Bridge?
Any help would be appreciated.

Quoted from Zigzagzag:

If my math is correct, 35V/200W is about 6A which is well below the original 25A.
I wouldn't risk it. Rectifiers are cheap and easy to find, so I recommend buying a new one.

Sorry, posted this wrong was very tired last night and did it too quickly.
Original bridge is 25A 50V
Can I replace with 35A 400V?
It’s over rated, but should work?

Does anyone have a set of pop bumper caps for a Magic Castle? All three of mine are broken with no tabs? PM me let me know,
Thanks…..Mike

Quoted from dvs626:

Why not make them Mike?
Purchase the blank Red caps https://www.marcospecialties.com/pinball-parts/10434-R
Then using waterslide decals print the art and place onto the new caps.
I did a quick video of this when I was recreating my Bell Games Cobra caps.
After the image is transferred onto the bumper cap, I carefully heated it up in the oven for 15 minutes at around 150 degrees Celsius. I was standing by the oven the whole time to ensure it wasn't too hot. (You dont want to see those caps melting!)

Interesting, I’ll have to look into that. Thanks for the tip.

I am thinking of doing a full restoration on my Magic Castle. Would like to do the cabinet as one side is faded. Asking here is there anyone that has done this in the states? If so where did you get the stencils from? Does anyone make them?
Any input would be appreciated.

I would be interested in cabinet decals for a Magic Castle once you get them done as mine is sun faded on one side. Please keep me in your progress.
