Quoted from swampwiz:

Anyone doing the Gen 1 power board remanufacture? The one for my Space Shuttle looks screwy, with all kinds of mods, including what looks like a small bolted on board at the top. I much prefer to have new boards that don't have any screwy hacks (i.e., that have been designed to remove those hacks).

We are working on both of them, G1 and G2 but no forecast for the moment, first concentrating in finishing what is currently beeing produced.

Quoted from Pingball:

Joined the club with my first Zaccaria. Had been looking for a Combat for a while, pretty excited to have found this beauty.

Damn, looks nice. Congrats! I've owned a Combat for 4 years which I bought site-unseen, broken and missing the large plastic that covers the back right side. Had the plastic remade, and have the game still sitting, waiting for my buddy wisefwumyogwave to get it playing.

In the meantime, I have played the one at TPF last 3 years, and it is a real fantastic EM. One of the best I've ever played.

I shall be patiently waiting for your product. I know that I am ready to do install a complete set of remanufactured boards into my Space Shuttle (the ones in my Farfalla look in much better shape, so I don't think I will need that - although *I* have a very short fuse with OEM boards, and am always looking to install a remanufactured one at the slightest hint of problems).

Quoted from play_pinball:

Well it’s my problem to solve soon enough

This was a lie. What he meant to say is it's his problem for me to solve.

Quoted from rvdv:

That’s how this is is hooked up also
Do you have a pic of the coin switches how the wires are on it
I’ve got too many loose wires

Anyone got a picture of the coin switches? I can figure out the wiring sort of but not 100%. The column wires are easy enough I'm just not sure how to wire up the row wire.

#1305 4 years ago

The diodes on the coin door might be toast. My 1n4148's are at home (which I think is what is in the machine now) but I have 1n4004's on hand. Will 1n4004's work?

More Spooky questions:

Everyone has said we needed a step up/down transformer for this game but looking at the transformer in here, is there a reason it couldn’t be rewired down and a new plug attached? Not sure I’m understanding why other owners have stated that this cannot be rewired since it has the extra lugs to do it.

Its not magical, if the voltage/amperage coming off the tap is correct for the circuit, you are good to go.

well my transformer doesn't have those 115 lugs like yours does. Just 200-220.

#1310 4 years ago

Bizarre! Well, my brother pinball_ric rewired it to the 115v lug and it's working great. Well, it's "powering on great" at least. Still trying to kill some ghouls in the switch matrix preventing us from being able actually play the dang thing.

Thanks for replying. I was actually going to reach out to either you, david or both just to double check if play_pinball somehow got a magical unicorn. Which it seems he did.

I want to install led's on my farfalla.

Any advice?

Quoted from pinballinreno:

I put leds in mine and it looks good. Maybe some occasional ghosting but nothing too crazy. GI in warm white then color match inserts to the shot. Don't have any great pics as I usually only do that wen i am getting ready to sell You can kind of see it in the pic below linked below.

https://photos.app.goo.gl/1XjTGrgTwARYR7an9

Edit: I will also mention I did the rainbow in multicolor and I think it looks sharp.

Non-ghosting led's?
Is there a fix one could do for the ghosting?

What about NoFlix led's?

#1315 4 years ago

Here is a link to mine, did not see any ghosting or anything though I used leds from various different provider to acheive my rainbow.

#1316 4 years ago

I used standard comets and I might be exaggerating the ghosting. It is usually only momentary.

#1317 4 years ago

I use daylight 2SMB in all my GI's for zacs. only ones I use for GI sockets. I'd suggest 1smb for backboxes as 2smbs are bright but they have great light distribution. Frosted. I will use color for inserts from time to time.

#1318 4 years ago

I used the Ablaze 1-LED Flat Tops and Ablaze 3-LED from Pinball Life, I don't notice any ghosting.

I matched inserts except in front of targets, I made the orange targets orange, the blue targets blue, etc.
I made the rainbow trail multicolored, started out with 3 LED in the rainbow but that was too bright for me, so I switched to the 1 LED Flat Tops. I have a 4-SMD red for the Multi-Special and put a 1-SMD flex under the raised playfield to add a little more light back there.

I have a parts list if anyone is interested.

#1319 4 years ago

Well I figured out why rvdv was having so much trouble with the front cabinet switches. Not only was the wiring all hacked up and causing matrix problems but the board also has switch matrix issues. Put together my zaccaria switch matrix tester board last night and hooked it up today. The front cabinet switches on still didn't work with the tester and one of the playfield switches was acting as test advance. Fairly confident the cabinet wiring is ok now. Just have to sort out the board and see if I have the parts on hand. Anyone got any tips for troubleshooting the switch matrix to figure out which component is bad?

#1320 4 years ago

Well, I had issues with mine, ended up buying a new board and sent the old one for repair to the nederland specialist. He does not speak english though.

#1321 4 years ago

Well I guess I don't have to troubleshoot anything yet. Pretty sure I found the problem. Now to figure out if I have this chip and what the actual part number is. Chip says 2081A while schematics say 3081.

I was gong to write you to control IC38 but you found it first.

it's a CA3081 equivalent to ULN2081

Actually just finished putting in the CA3081 replacement pcb barakandl sells (bought a 10 pack awhile back). I actually have an NTE916 I apparently bought like 20 years ago but I only have 1 and don't want to put it into a machine with questionable wiring still. Clipped the battery (shockingly no corrosion yet thank god) and put nvram in while I was at it. Was already socketed so easy.

Did that resolve your matrix issue? Do all switches work now? I'd love to see a gameplay vide when you get it running. This title always eluded me.

We haven’t had a chance to try yet. The game is at my work (due to space issues at home, and as leasing manager I know where the empty rooms are ). pinball_ric had to take the board home with him to do the repair. Updates to come!

PM me your parts list please.
And I'll order all the bulbs.

Or email me the doc

Here's problem that I ran into.

I have an 1987 Apple Time "Thunder Man', kind of a bastard cousin of your Zac's. I had infrequent resets and then the machine quits altogether: no LED's, no boot. I spent some time looking at bridges, regulators and various components on the PS board. I noticed a very faint burn spot on a connector housing. I replaced the #6 pin on CN1 (yellow wire). Neither the old pin or header pin looked bad. But when I fired it up, the machine works great! No more resets. I guess that the Power Failure on these boards must be really sensitive to even the slightest voltage drop. I'm going to repin the entire connector with Trifurcons and replace the header pins.

Hope this will help someone in the future.

#1328 4 years ago

one for the Farfalla owners, with thanks in advance:

My backglass was broken in a house move and discarded - can anyone let me know the dimensions of the actual glass so I could get one recut? Has anyone got a good, clear scanned file for the backglass decals they'd be ok to share with me?

thanks all for your help with this

#1329 4 years ago

BG resto has farfalla on file and can make them.

Not entirely. I overlooked that row 0 doesn't use U38. Got the board back home with me now. TR3 might be bad which is a BC548 but I don't have any of those on hand. I do have 2n2222's which I think will work. Should I use that or is there something else that might work? I have some other things but that was the first thing I saw as a possible alternative.

Hopefully U41 isn't also bad. Before I go swapping things this time I'll put the oscilliscope on it to see the signal is at least coming out of U41. Though I guess both TR3 and U38 are driven by U41 so it is probably fine.

#1331 4 years ago

Here is the datasheet for BC548:
https://alltransistors.com/transistor.php?transistor=23407

A cross for BC548 is here, maybe you have a substitute (I don't see 2n2222 as a cross):
https://alltransistors.com/crsearch.php?mat=Si&struct=NPN&pc=0.5&ucb=30&uce=30&ueb=5&ic=0.1&tj=150&ft=300&cc=6&hfe=110&caps=TO92

#1332 4 years ago

I'm making this harder than I need to I think. The U38 replacement board uses 2n4401's which I have a bunch of. TR3 is just an extension of U38 since it only has 7 transistors and the board needs 8. The pinout for the 2n4401's in reversed so I just need to put it in backwards.

Spooky lives!!! I’ve got a ton of switch adjustments I need to make, as well as better aligning where the two ramps meet (pinball_ric can post a video showing that problem).

Interestingly, this one seems to have different music than the others I’ve seen in videos (CaptainNeo looking in your direction) or in the digital version. We’ll post a video soon.

Made a quick gameplay video. Interested to hear other owners thoughts on the music.

You can see the ramp alignment issue I mentioned at the very end.

#1335 4 years ago

It looks like the sound card goes to a lower speed.
There must be a problem somewhere on the sound board.

#1337 4 years ago

English speech roms too. First I heard it in English, nice. Nice to see the gameplay, thanks!

I forget is there a small pot on the sound card that allows pitch adjustment? I remember a volume adjust but maybe there is s pitch adjust too. This one has the 2 sound cards (main and daughter)

#1338 4 years ago

I don’t know if it’s strictly a different pitch though. There are beat patterns that don’t sound like they match up to my ears, even if you compensate for the time delay difference.

I’m certainly not disappointed, I think I like the music in mine more!

#1339 4 years ago

there are 2 adjustment pots on the sound board. Maybe 3. They one adjusts the speed of the sound. It's slower than it should be. that needs to be adjusted.

#1340 4 years ago
Quoted from CaptainNeo:

"Needs" is a strong word. We actually think it sounds better this way, at least for now. Haven't yet played it much (I basically left once we confirmed it was working) but neither of us have heard it switch what track it is playing. In your video I think I heard it switch tracks a couple times. The version that is in the Zaccaria pack on steam doesn't change tracks either. Just plays the same thing on repeat.

Eventually I'll get the roms dumped and compare them just to make sure there's nothing different there. Could have dumped the CPU roms but didn't think about it. Though there's probably no change there.

#1341 4 years ago

It does change tracks when I hit the Shades Canal at 56 seconds into the video (until I drain the ball, since I probably needed to hit the canal again for it to do anything). What I don't hear is the little refrain heard in the "standard" pitch version, as heard throughout in the digital version here:

I have my fingers crossed, as I should be joining this club tomorrow. Scheduled to pick up a Devil Riders in the morning.

Now we just need a code update to your OLED display board for Zac's.

#1345 4 years ago
Quoted from pinball_ric:

Part of the reason I bought one, actually. I know the functionality is similar enough to Bally that getting one to work should get both to work.

I don't know why, but I'm always a sucker for underdogs and under-appreciated stuff. So I'm hoping to give some love to the Zac's out there.

-Hans

#1346 4 years ago

There's a guy from hungary that does LED displays for a cheap price for Zacs.
Installed it on my Farfalla, was all good.

#1347 4 years ago

He's referring to the small display unit I make, for doing board repair on the bench. I've been promising some code updates for it for quite a long time, but never had a machine in the shop to figure a few things out.

-Hans

#1348 4 years ago

Started diving into my new machine, which is actually the one Pinballer22 was discussing a couple pages back.

The issue is most likely with the CPU board. There are a few old repairs on the clocking circuit at IC13/14/15 that could be the culprit's. Typical missing pads, crusty brown flux, a few jumper wires. It's partially booting, and does kinda respond to dip switch #4, but ends up just flashing zeros on all the displays. The good news is these repairs all got sockets, though not the best soldering job.

Interestingly the CPU, sound, and driver boards all look to be conformal coated at some point. Never worked on a Zac before, but never seen this on a pinball board from any other manufacturer. Normally something that's only done if there are environmental concerns. Are they all like this? Seems to be an acrylic coating too, as isopropyl alcohol is taking it off easily. Could explain the reputation for these boards to be difficult to solder on.

Neat way of doing their schematics, but also hard to follow in some regards. Wish there was a map for the test points somewhere.

-Hans

#1349 4 years ago

Are these of value to anyone? The playfield is a Zaccaria Ski Jump. I think the back box is from a jet themed Zaccaria pin (I forget the name). I am planning on using them for parts but wanted to check with “the club” before destroying a little piece of history.

Thanks.
