I haven't really been able to dig into mine very deeply yet, but the back ramp flap that pops up and down seems to constantly cycle up and down instead of staying up in the mode it should be up. I did a quick look at it, and didn't see anything that stuck out at me. In switch test, that ramp in the down position shows the switch is closed, and in the up position, it reads open. Is that the correct orientation?

#252 4 years ago

That sounds right. I'll have to look at the manual. But yeah. That eos switch tells it when it's up or down. that's the only thing I can think of..... I'll keep thinking

Figured it out...it was the small coil that acts to catch the large coil when it pops the ramp up. The catch had pivoted a bit out of the way, and was no longer catching. All good now!

Hello all Road Kings fans.

Do anyone now if it is a new ROM out there that fixes the progressive Time lock value?

#255 4 years ago

I got one. I just bought a pinscore display and a resistor board. I had to do a little
Playfield touch up and painted the middle tire tracks by hand.

My pop bumpers aren't working and my ramp wire form is broken.
Work in progress. Will post pictures later.

#256 4 years ago

Do you mean you got a ROM With fixed Time Lock??

Where did you get it?

#257 4 years ago

Hey Guys ,

I am trying to track down a new drop target for my RK, (03-7773-4...I think ).. Mine has broken. I have re-glued but I am sure it will fail again. Cheers

Hey everyone! I recently inherited a RK machine from my father. I’ve spent quite a bit of time in it and finally have all of the electronics working. I decided to take all of the plastics off and clean the play field and I discovered some pretty significant water damage. The wood is worn and bubble up in some spots. What would be the process for getting a play field restored or purchasing a play field? I haven’t been able to find much info. Any info would be appreciated.

I wonder if there will ever be a Hardtop made for RK. Yours could use one. Otherwise unless you are in love with this one, I would sell it or part it out.
Get what you can, then buy a much nicer one. RK is a pretty inexpensive game and dumping a lot of money in one just doesn't make a lot of sense.

#260 4 years ago

I would repair the really bad spots using an exacto knife and filler, touch it up and put a playfield protector on it and play the heck out of it. Like @ dozer said its hard to justify spending a lot on a Road Kings ( although I think its a fantastic game personally).
But if it means a lot to you there are people on here that might undertake that playfield for a restoration. Probably better to start a new topic asking to see if anyone would be interested. But be forewarned, you may get a fair share of negativity regarding its condition from the know-it-all peanut gallery.
The playfield protectors are at playfieldprotectors.com if you want to look into them.
Best of luck!

I'm not aware of any new roms. What problem are you having with time lock?

There is a file called l-5 fix but i think its just l-4

#263 4 years ago

dozer1 & Sinistarrett - Thank you both for your input. I'm not sure what I'm going to do in the long term, but for now, I'm playing it and enjoying it. I think I'm going to be looking for another machine to maybe combine the good from each and make a great machine.

Looks like I am going to be starting Road Kings ramps shortly because I need to find a new home for my copy. If you would be interested in the initial run, please PM me with an email address so I can add you to my list. The ramps will be clear material, and price will be around $80 each. I will probably start testing sometime next week.

#269 3 years ago

Here's what Road Kings looks like with new clear ramps. I have some work to do before I run another set, but you get the idea!

Ramps are available now...let me know if you want a full set or just the back. I think I have 1 or two full sets unclaimed at the moment. I shipped a bunch out over the last couple weeks, so I am thinking we will start seeing installation pictures soon!

So I changed out the auxillary board on the bottom Playfield R/H side of the game.
Things were fine and I played a few games.
Next day I turn it on and the knocker is spanking it hard. Any ideas why ?

Was that when you turned the game on? If so, it probably gave a switch error, because a switch hadn't been triggered for some games in a row. Maybe the under-the-ramp-switch (the ramp only goes up after relocking the balls during multiball, unless you have a reprogrammed RK2.0 version ofcourse )?

#275 3 years ago

It may have been the switch . My ramp was loose on it, because I replaced the wire form. It stopped. Holy crap was that annoying.
So now I just have to get the pops working.
Thanks for the advice. Any on the pops?

There's a TNT video about that knocking on RK for a switch that hasn't worked in a while.
When I bought my RK it did the same thing, the guy actually said I don't know what that it so I'll drop the price $50. Ended up being that switch under the ramp that hadn't been hit in a while.

#277 3 years ago

Thank you. I played with the wire form switch and its worked.

I just bought an RK. i am in the process of completely strip it to restore. If anyone is interested i scanned the cabinet and top image and redrawn the artwork in affinity designer to print on stickers. I have the pdf's if anyone is interested. Is there someone who have a nice hires scan from the playfield?

Just joined the club- picked up a Road Kings on the cheap. Everything's in working order but there's no sound effects. In the diagnostic tests, the music tests all work just fine (and I hear music during gameplay). None of the sound tests play any of the sound effects or voice clips, though. Pressing the "sound" test button on the MPU also does nothing. I don't have a logic probe, so I'm not sure how I would follow the manual's instructions to check for pulsing on pins of the U9 chip. Any other obvious things I should be looking for?

I’m in! Fun pin so far. That center shot is tight!
Super nice example I found. Thinking it may not have been routed.

Quick question. What should the AC voltage for the GI be testing at? I know the fuse says it’s 6.3vac. My line is testing 10.1. I know it’s usually slightly higher but that seems quite a bit higher.

Currently the GI is not working. Voltage checks out as does continuity checks between the power supply board and the playfield and back glass board.

Is there something controlling GI I should be checking? Fuses are all good.

Also does anyone know if this drop target has a replacement available?

Thx

Side note. Some diagnostics has revealed that two transistors need replacing. 1 is for the outhole coil. The other is a coin relay.

I’m going to replace them tonight but wondering if the coin replay could possibly be cause the GI issue?

Guys, upon startup, does your RK make any "clicking" noises? Almost sounds like a relay clicking twice.

#291 2 years ago

Not the knocker...?...This game will sound the knocker a few times upon startup if a switch hasn't been hit in x amount of games....it’s usually the switch under the lift-ramp.........Joey

Solved the GI issue. The relay was engaging. But nothing. However if I tapped the relay on the power supply board it would flicker.

Took the cover off that relay to discover two pieces of loose solder floating around. The two wires connected to the contacts had broken loose. Only making contact if I tapped on it. Two dabs of solder and relay works. GI works.

Joined the club about a month ago. Got one out of a barn with no glass and I’m trying to bring it back. First real restoration job for me. It’s been a learning process. Haha. I had to level the inserts and get after it with a magic eraser for ball swirls. I have been trying to summon my inner artist but the touch up is challenging. It won’t be perfect but hope to get it playing really well.

Can anyone send a pic of their machine back box lights or is there a schematic that shows which type bulbs go where in the back box? I noticed two different type of larger bulbs along with the smaller bulbs in mine and there are also some empty spots so just curious before I start replacing. Any help is appreciated.

I’m having a strange issue that seems simple but so far is posing a challenge.

The right ramp eos and the center ramp swinging switch entrance.

The swing switch only activates when the ramp is up. When the ramp is down, the swing switch at the center ramp entrance does not register. All other switches on that row operate normally.

The funny thing is, even if the ramp is up, allowing the center switch to work, (after the drop target is down) it still doesn’t collect a letter. I watched a YouTube video, and it appeared to not collect a letter either, despite it flashing “collect letter”

Anyone have any strange operation between the right ramp and center switch? I changed out diodes, no change, and also tested from the board to the switch, where each switch individually worked fine.

Just picked up a Road Kings today gentlemen. I am looking forward to getting this thing home and in the game room to see what it will need. It has a switch failure error. The playfield looks decent. Cabinet itself shows signs of years worth of "love" but you wont be able to see the sides when it is sandwiched between Black Knight 2000 and Police Force!
