Even if I accept your Paperboy challenge, I would never win.
I can only get to Thursday and I die pretty early. Ugh….
Damn NES games are tough to beat.
My List:
Robotron 2084 (already own)
Mrs Pac-Man (already own)
Good Mame system with all-in-one control panel
Tempest
Elevator Action
Bitkit cabinet for 4 way and two way games
Vanguard cabinet with Bitkit for 8 way and 2 way games
JROK multi Williams cabinet
JROK Taito cabinet
JROK Qbert cabinet.
That is my 5 cabinet dream line up.
Quoted from Johnnybee:No particular order:
Pole Position
Tempest
Tron
Star Wars
Hang On
If more allowed
Asteroids
Battlezone
Space Invaders (or deluxe)
Nice line up, but wouldn't you rather have Pole Position II instead of Pole Position?
You still get the Fuji Track with three additional ones.
Coincidentally enough in 2020 I re-purposed a weird (Superman S shaped room) to be an in-home arcade that would really only fit 5 games total. I was a 90s kid so the machines I was looking for were focused on that era.
It started with getting a MAME in a 4-player X-Men cabinet, then original cabs were added.
Current lineup is:
X-Men 4 player (MAME)
Cruisin Exotica (in a Cruisin World body?)
Simpsons
NFL Blitz (2-player)
Simpsons Bowling (purchased as a package with Simpsons)
My wish list is to add Street Fighter 2 and a shooting game (T2, Virtua Cop 2 or Time Crisis). Assuming there’s no space and keep it at 5 then NFL Blitz and Simpsons Bowling would be the ones to go.
Do shooter MAMEs actually exist? Wonder if I should look into that if so.

This is a really fun 4 player game. Technos made some personal favorites in this era.
There is a glitch in the game, where if you can eliminate everyone in the ring during Royal Rumble and BEFORE all entrants have appeared, the match automatically stops, even if there are still CPU characters waiting to appear.
Quoted from SantaEatsCheese:I have a T2 Arcade1up. It does not have good replay value (at all) but it is a favorite with my kids friends. That game is designed not to be able to be beaten on one quarter. I had a hard time getting through to the end of the game with unlimited credits and still was unable to beat the final T-1000, but in fairness my buddy shooting it up with me is usually my 6 year old, so that might have something to do with it. There are some very cheap "escort" style missions that take many tries to pass.
I don't think it's designed to be beaten, period. If I ever meet George Petro, I'm going to ask him "what the hell, man?"
That being said, I do drop a few coins into T2s whenever I see them. I think it's a combination of the nostalgia, the great graphics and sound for the time, and the darker, more serious tone that seems to borrow more from the teaser trailer than the actual movie:
Quoted from NevadaNutJob:I believe there’s a guy on youtube who did a play through in SmashTV on 1 credit but it is an extremely difficult game . Fun though ! Once you play through the brawlers ( Simpsons , Ninja Turtles , X-men , etc… ) I’m usually done for a good long while but I can’t count how many times I’ve taken SmashTV to the end and I never get sick of it - fantastic game !
I've seen that as well. Like most of those, he makes it look so easy. I may have gotten to Mutoid Man once with one continue. I guess it really is just a matter of practice. Smash TV certainly has a lot of action and the wacky premise goes a long way. It's a great re-imagining of the Robotron gameplay style.
What do you think of Total Carnage? That's one I've never seen in the wild anywhere, only played it on MAME.

I’ve played Total Carnage a couple times and it’s fun but it doesn’t draw me in the way Robotron & Smash do . My avatar on klov for the last 15 years or so is Mutoid Man so yeah - I’m a fan !

God both so good.
I miss that Dolphin! Edit: and King's shirt bursting open
Quoted from gonzo73:Am I Crazy ? I prefer Galaxian to Galaga. It's the OG.
You're not crazy. They're similar games, but defiantly don't play the same.
Quoted from tilt-master:Donkey Kong
Golden Tee
Spy hunter
Gauntlet
Street Fighter II
Spy Hunter = you must be better at video games than me. That game eats my lunch.
Quoted from gonzo73:Am I Crazy ? I prefer Galaxian to Galaga. It's the OG.
Me too. The precise shooting and getting the 800 bonus from the boss are so satisfying. I like Space Invaders a lot for the same reason.
My current lineup which is pretty well-rounded:
Pair of linked Cruisin World sit downs
Gauntlet Dark legacy
60-in-1 in a Namco cabaret
Home made 4-player Pac-Man battle royale
Arcade1up Pong Pub table (4-player Warlords!)
Arcade1up Street Fighter II retropie for fighting games, NES, VS. Games, etc
Realizing the 60-in-1 and retropie machines are not originals, but they are pretty close for standard joysticks games. Anything that requires a wheel, spinner, trackball, guns, etc, should be on dedicated hardware.
720...that's it. That's all it would take to make me happy.
Update- ok...maybe add in John Elway Football.
Quoted from Ryancaseystudio:Update- ok...maybe add in John Elway Football.
I was thinking John Elway/all american football too, classics
I personally would love to find a Sportsstation with Nba/Nfl blitz. Does anyone know if they fixed these to games to run in mame?
There is one for sale on Kijiji right now! I think I remember it was $950 CAD so ironically $720 USD!

I've been really enjoying this thread. As a life-long Bengals fan currently living in KC, enjoying a lazy Sunday morning hunkered down in my black & orange getting ready for tonight's showdown. Thought I'd tally up the votes and see what's doing. Interesting to note: out of 175 posts (and probably 150 "ballots"), there were 114 games with only a single nomination. Part of what I love about these hobbies (pin + arcade); so much room for so many individual tastes.
Here's the top 10 (number of votes in parentheses):
1). Robotron 2084 (32)
2). Tempest (24)
3). Galaga (23)
4). Donkey Kong (22)
5 TIE). Joust (16)
5 TIE). Ms. Pac-man (16)
7). Star Wars (15)
8 TIE). Mortal Kombat II (14)
8 TIE). Street Fighter II (14)
10 TIE). 720 (11)
10 TIE). Pac-man (11)
10 TIE). Asteroids (11)
Attached is a snapshot of the other games receiving 5 or more votes (note: for this view, I aggregated votes for various Time Crisis and House of the Dead versions into one line. Hence the asterisks).

I haven’t seen a battlezone in 25+ years
I had a sit down Crazy Taxi, it was a blast but it took up too much room.
I have an Arcade1up Golden Tee I got new super cheap, but I loaned it out to a friend, hoping it would help with his stroke recovery.
The only other video arcade game I have an interest in is Tempest. Doubt I'll ever get a real one, not sure I want a mini of it as the graphics aren't vector (right?).
Can I use the space for my other four game allotment on pins? I really need that space with this Big Ball Bowler in the way (Chicago Coin Corvette), awaiting resoration to functionality!

Paperboy
Spy Hunter
Star Wars
Cyber Sled
I was the GOAT on Cyber Sled!
POP N MUSIC PEACE
Sound Voltex
Mortal Kombat Cabinet with 1/2/3
Street Fighter style cabinet with Pandora box in it
Gitador Drum Machine
Oh wow I forgot all aboot Cyber Sled!
I also should have put Steel Talons on my list. At home & free I should be able to master "Real Heli-Flight!"
I mean no...but I could try
Quoted from DeeGor:I bought a Cyber Sled a few years ago, and it was a real adventure getting it into my basement. That game is an absolute beast to move. It's a great game, and I had so many epic battles when I was younger.
[quoted image]
I’ve measured a few times for cruisin USA and the wave runner game and I really don’t think I could get it into my basement. Short of literally taking it a part. Did you have to strip it down or just force it in?

I ended up taking the entire thing apart so that I could make the main body of the game as light as possible. It helped, but it was still extremely heavy.
The game has casters on the bottom, so we wheeled the game through my backyard, by making a road out of plywood sheets. Once we got to the stairs leading to the basement, we built a makeshift ramp out of the plywood sheets and lowered it down the stairs using the winch from a friend's truck. It was a crazy day, but we did get it down there. Fully assembled the game weighs around 900 lbs.
The ongoing joke is, when we sell the house, the game comes with it.

I’ve always joked about wenching arcades up/down on plywood sheets. Especially with the old monitors, they are so top heavy and heavy in general. One day I’ll have a small outbuilding with a garage door to make it easier. I’m still happy I haven’t tried to get anything that large into the basement.

Not at all. I’m with you on that!

Things I've learned from Arcade collecting:
Games that I loved back in the day, when I could play only occasionally in arcades on limited teenager funds, don't necessarily hold up well now in a game room over many more plays. A good example is Outrun, which I loved as a kid, but when I finally got one a few years ago, I got quickly tired of it after maybe a few dozen plays (and it was a BEHEMOTH to move in and out of my game room!). Same is true for most driving games in general. A few other examples are progression games like Moon Patrol and Rolling Thunder. You can quickly become good enough that the first few courses/levels become boring and tedious. That said, I still might jump at a Rolling Thunder if one came available in my area.
Conversely, games that I shied away from because they were too "hard" in my youth are much better now. Games need to be intense from the get-go to have much play value in a collection. Robotron is maybe the best-known example of this, and probably why it's so much more popular for collectors (it's by far my #1 favorite) than it ever was when it first came out. The only other reason I'd keep a game around is if it's a big hit with visitors (one of the main reasons, along with pure nostalgia, that I keep Galaga, but every so often I'll kick of a marathon session if I'm in the mood and have time).
Somewhat in between is Joust, which I have and was another one of my childhood faves, but takes about 5-6 waves before things get suitably exciting.
The other game I currently have is GORF, which is another one I bought because I loved it so much as a kid, but got pretty quickly tired of it and now am looking to sell it.
The nice thing about pins is that the challenge level (at least the keep-the-ball-from-draining part) is there from the very beginning. That's why they get probably 90% of the play time in my game room.
