    Hey, why not.

I’ve done a few trips since the last thread, but this one will be a month long drive around California and Nevada, meeting Pinsiders and playing pinball, so it’s worth documenting with some photos and words.

    The previous threads:

    We landed in LA today.

I’d prepaid for a Full Size at Alamo car rentals for 35 days ... when I got there they had surplus mini-vans so they offered me one for the same price. Hey, why not ... it’s way too big for three people, but what the heck. We chose a Dodge Caravan GT. I don’t know what’s GT about it, the words GT and Mini-Van usually aren’t mentioned in the same sentence. Haha! It’s got 7 seats, leather, sat nav, sat radio (which unfortunately I haven’t got a subscription too or I’d listen to Eddie Trunk...) and almost enough horsepower to drag all that stuff around.

5 minutes from LAX is Randy’s Donuts, a LA landmark. Danni and I grabbed one “classic” donut each - $1 each. Always funny when everyone else is ordering a dozen donuts for themselves and we order one each. Lol!

We hit the highway straight up the coast.

    First stop - Malibu.

Lovely day in LA today, about 27c/80f, with a nice breeze. It was really nice up the coast.

The store on the Malibu pier had a cool Bally speed boat ride, and they also had a really tidy Gottlieb Surf Champ pin inside the store. Retro!

    Welcome aboard team.

After Malibu, we headed up to Santa Barbara.

This is the area where the big fires are at the moment. The highways are covered in a smokey haze.

The photos don’t really capture it very well ... as we got closer to Santa Barbara, you could see flames in the hills and fire planes and choppers dumping water and retardant on the fire.

Santa Barbara is a lovely little town, all done in traditional mission style. We will look around in the morning and take a few more photos.

    Quoted from golfingdad1:

make sure to stop by the Arlington Theatre on State Street and catch a movie or at least ask to take a quick look. The inside is absolutely amazing.

We saw that theatre last night, and went back for a look this morning. What a cool building!

I used to be involved with the Save the Civic Theatre Trust which saved the classic “atmospheric style” Civic Theatre in Queen St, Auckland ... so theatres are sorta my thing.

Unfortunately we couldn’t look inside the actual theatre, the ticket lady was there by herself but invited us to come back when a movie was playing and we could have a look through. Alas we needed to make tracks, so we will look through next time!

Even the outside was cool. You can see the ash from the fires on the tiles.

Will yous be going to INDISC?

    “Yous” will be there.

Yeah, you need a car. The location is about 90 miles out of LA in Banning. You could also fly into Palm Springs, it’d be a bit closer. But you’d need a car either way.

After we went to the Arlington Theatre, we walked around the rest of State Street in Santa Barbara.

As I mentioned before, they’ve done all the buildings in traditional “mission style” so all the new buildings match the old ones. Very cool.

The streets were pretty deserted, due to the fires in the hills. Most people were wearing face masks to ward off the smoke. These photos were taken around midday .. check out the lack of people ..

There were a couple of other theatres in the street too. Very nice area!

There was a cool little store called Rocket Fizz, with candy and funky sodas. Some of them we had seen before at Pops Sodas over on Route66.

They even had a John5 soda for SpookyCharlie

We headed to Solvang ... a small township founded by Danish immigrants around 100 years ago.

All the buildings in the Main Street are built in the traditional Danish style. There are windmills, Carlsburg beer bars, all sorts of stuff.

    Quoted from jar155:

My wife is from Santa Barbara and my in-laws still live there. Bummer it's not showing well right now with all the smoke and haze.

Santa Barbara looks like an awesome town. I bet it is usually pumping, especially at holiday time.

Understandable that it’s empty right now, what with California’s 4th largest ever fire taking place a few miles up the road ...

I heard yesterday that there are 900 fire trucks and 8000 firefighters in the area. We saw some trucks from San Francisco.

    We stayed overnight in Monterey.

This morning we went to Cannery Row. This seaside street was a huge area for canning sardines back in the 20s-50s. By the 1960s, all the Sardines had dried up and the factories went out of business.

These days the old plants have been turned into a trendy area, and down the end of the street there is a huge aquarium.

Then we drove up to Santa Cruz.

Santa Cruz has the biggest boardwalk on the west coast. Famous for being featured in The Lost Boys, maybe one of my favourite movies. Alas, David and Michael (or even Max) weren’t around today .. they probably only come down there at night.

Being winter, most of the boardwalk was closed, but still free to walk around.

The Charles Looff wooden carousel was built in 1911 and the Big Dipper coaster in 1924.

There are two arcades, both feature modern Stern pins. Gary would be proud!

Only one thing wrong with Santa Cruz ... all those damn vampires.

Then we drove up to San Francisco.

We have a hotel in town, so we walked 25 minutes down to the waterfront to check that out. First stop was the Musee Mechanique, which is a collection of cool coin op stuff dating back the last 100 years. Entry is free, you just pay for the games/attractions.

They had about 6 EM Pins, plus an Addams, POTC and an Indy. The EMs were all good condition, but Indy has a touch of PF wear. They don’t build em like they used to!

Lots of other cool stuff which you don’t see every day.

The place was busy, which was great to see, and everyone was dropping their quarters and trying things out.

Made the final 4 of the GOTG Launch Party (knocked out Danni in the process lol) ... I had been playing pretty well all day but left my worse game till last and came 4th in the 4 player final. Oh well ...

After that finished about 9.30ish, we drove 45 Mins across town to the mof house!

MOF has a great collection of 80s games. He shuns DMDs so be sure not to mention them in his presence!

He has a Defender. Say no more.

Thanks for the hospitality MOF and Ann!

We went to Free Gold Watch to watch the finals of the Papa Circuit Event. There was a side pingolf Comp at 1pm, but we were all tired from two late nights so we skipped it.

We saddled up and drove over the Golden Gate Bridge out to Sausalito.

Cool bridge! But the Bay Bridge is even more impressive, with upper/lower decks and huge spans. You can see it in the background of the cityscape. The island to the left is Alcatraz.

When we were in Sausalito, I hunted down the old Record Plant, where dozens of famous albums were recorded. Probably the most famous one was Fleetwood Macs Rumours.

This place has an amazing history. The drug use there in the 70s and 80s was legendary, and at one stage it was even seized by the feds because one of the owners was making Meth.

It’s all pretty well summed up on the wiki page, it’s some great reading:

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Record_Plant#Sausalito

It’s in a very unusual place for a studio ... small seaside village, only about 100 yards from the waters edge.

it’s not a studio any more .. it had a sign on the door that said “yoga retreat” or something. The building had for sale signs on it.

    Quoted from Methos:

    KISS: Unmasked – 1980
John Lennon and Yoko Ono: Double Fantasy – 1980
Interesting list on the NY version of the studio.
My 2nd favorite KISS album and Lennon's last album were recorded damn near back to back. KISS left in March and Lennon entered in August. Never knew that....

Most of the big studios had 2-3 studios in them, so you’d have all sorts of artists in there together and going crazy. Rick James lived in the Sausalito studio for a period, imagine hanging out with that crazy dude!

    Quoted from Methos:

I read that about James in Sausalito...I couldn't even imagine the lunacy when he was present. Speaking of 1980, that was when KISS played in Auckland on the Unmasked tour - one of the best series of shows ever (including Sydney) by them. Were you lucky enough to attend?

No, I was only a little RD in 1980.

The drummer in my old band went though. The show was at Western Springs which is an outdoor speedway track in a valley. He said that Gene came onto the stage via a flying fox from the hill ... which would have been pretty cool. I have a mint program and ticket from the show which a lady gave me years back.

We went to Alcatraz today. Somewhere I’ve wanted to go pretty much all my life.

Weather was really nice, a little chilly in the shade, but nice in the sun.

We booked on the 12.30pm boat and headed over.

It was pretty darn cool. The US Parks service runs it, and as always, everything they run is pretty sweet.

One thing I didn’t know was that Indians occupied the island in 1969 (after the prison closed), demanding land rights and compensation for stolen land. This lasted till 1971 when they got kicked off. The two burnt out buildings below (the offers club and the Wardens house) were burnt when they were there, although nobody was ever charged with anything.

    It’s a lot bigger than I thought it’d be, around 26 acres.

Tonight we drove over to Oakland for the local Belles and Chimes meet.

For those that don’t know, Belles and Chimes is a Woman’s only pinball league that was founded in Oakland a few years back. They are now in most major US cities, and last month Danni started the NZ Belles and Chimes, the first chapter out of the USA.

Tonight’s meet is being held at Stay Gold Deli, a hipster joint over in Oakland. They only have 4 machines but it’s working out ok for the ladies.

They do BBQ food here, plus beer. The girls got a Reuben which was chock full of pastrami, and I got a BBQ brisket roll with bacon, spicy mayo and jalapeños which was AWESOME but it sure was spicy!

Walked down to Ghirardelli Square this morning, and rode the cablecar all the way to the end of the line in Market Square.

$7 per person one way, it was mainly tourists on there, but a few locals jumped on as we drove along.

Very cool. There used to be heaps of cable car lines around San Fran but most were wiped out in the 1906 earthquake. Only three remained, and they’re still in use today.

The photos don’t do justice to how steep some of the hills are.

    I have a new man-crush ... the Bay Bridge!

This is just the West Side .. it was opened in 1936 and is about 3 miles long. It’s a double decked bridge ... Oakland bound traffic is on the bottom and city bound traffic is on top. 5 lanes each way.

It goes through the island, then the East Bridge (opened recently) is another 3 miles long. It costs nothing to travel over to Oakland ... but it costs $4-6 to come back over to the city.

    It’s about 160 metres high.

    Awesome.

It's like the guy is from SF... who's tipping him off on all the cool spots?
    -mof

I just walk around the place like I own it. Haha! Seriously though, we have a few places we know we are going to check out when we hit a city, a lot of the stuff we find we just ... find ...

We just got back from the MOF trip ... we left Lombard, drove through downtown, over the Bay Bridge, down past Alameda, stopped for In and Out Animal Style, hit the freeway again down to the 92 bridge as per the MOF instructions. Quite the drive! And yes, nice view up towards the city ...

    Thanks for the tip, MOF!

I remember the old days long ago (80s) when we still commonly had cars with sticks. It was nerve-wracking as hell driving in SF! You had better know how to work your clutch or you are in trouble.

I was just saying yesterday ... if you had a manual (stick) Ferrari around here you’d be buggered! You’d be in for a $10,000 clutch job every few months!

Today we left San Fran. Great city!

Pretty easy to get around. The hills make walking some streets a mission! Traffic was generally pretty light for a big city, except for the main roads that lead to the freeways.

A couple of shots of the trip through the city and crossing the two Bay Bridges.

Then we drove over to California’s State Capital, Sacramento.

    Looks like another great town!

We had a quick drive around the Old Town (looks really cool) and had just enough time to check out the Capital Building.

Cool building built in 1876! Nice dome!

Check out that door on the treasury!

In the basement, there’s a statue of Ronald

    Quoted from BallyPinWiz:

I've lived in California for 45 years and I saw more of the state in this thread than I have witnessed personally.

    Quoted from xsvtoys:

Most people from other parts of the US or other countries have no clue how expansive CA is. There are so many things to see, so many day trips and driving trips

    Gotta agree.

One thing that kept popping up in the Hearse thread was how many people had never explored their own states (or in some cases, never driven beyond their state line)

Kiwis are great travellers (useless tidbit of information: the average age a kiwi gets their first passport is 3 years old) ... but most of us have explored a lot of our country as well.

My tour of California showed us there is definitely two parts of CA - SoCal is like a different planet compated to NorCal.
    - Climate is different
    - people are different

Both places are cool, but they are very different. NorCal is more like say Tennessee in some respects. Except for the “maaaaaam” and the guns.

I encourage everyone to take a week or two, and drive around the countryside! It’s pretty cheap, and the TSA doesn’t need to invade your nether regions ....

These days with the internet, there’s so much travel information available, you can see what tickles your fancy before you step outside your front door.

    Drove around downtown Reno today.

Got to say, she’s a bit of a ghost town around there!

A few of the casinos were closed down, quite a few empty stores.

We parked in Cal-Neva Casino, when you entered the casino there was a 1980s nightclub haze of smoke from the motley crew of gamblers in there. The glass front door had been kicked in, there was a bit of plywood taped over the hole which looked like it had been there for some time.

The Main Street was pretty void of traffic ... so doing a high kick in the middle of the street was as safe as going one on the footpath!

The town has added some art pieces around the place to spark it up a little. The stained glass whale was pretty cool. We joked that the BELIEVE sign may have had the BE added in error lolll

Always a shame to see an area in a state like this ... I don’t know what would turn it around. You can’t have outside drinking like Downtown Vegas, cause it’s too cold ... maybe Winter Festivals or something? But all the casinos would need to clean up their act first ... dunno. It’s a hard one.

So we drove about 35 Mins south of Reno to go to Virginia City. It’s a gold mining town that dates back to the 1850s. The TV show Bonanza was based around this area, the fictional “Ponderosa” being “two hours horse ride” from Virginia City.

It’s really cool! Pretty much the whole Main Street is original. Half the buildings look like a decent gust of wind would knock them over.

All the footpaths are the original timber ones like you see in the westerns.

We met a couple of characters there.

First up, there was “Stinky” who owned Bernadine the donkey. “Stinky” smelt more than the donkey. Haha! If you held a carrot in your mouth, Bernadine would eat it out of your mouth.

Stinky liked the look of Fiona so he gave her his card (below..) ... I better watch my back ...

We also met a guy walking his pig. As one does ...

Then we drove down the road to Gold Hill and Silver City.

Both places are a lot smaller, but still a lot of history.

There are still active mines around, and heaps of abandoned ones.

You see a lot of fenced off mines which are basically holes in the ground.

After a while, we all headed around to Clint’s house, where Michael has a few other games stored. I wanted to check out the Rotation VIII, which is a rare Midway 4 player cocktail game from 1978/79.

What’s unusual about Rotation VIII is the playfield rotates automatically to each player when it’s their turn to play. Very cool! It’s layout is based off Bally’s Eight Ball ... it’s very addictive to play.

    http://www.ipdb.org/machine.cgi?id=2019

Clint also had this custom VW in his garage ... it was fitted with a custom fibreglass front end which you used to be able to buy. This car was a showroom model for the mods.

We also played Clint’s TX Sector and RoboWars which were great fun.

    Thanks guys!

    Xmas day in Reno!

Just had a quiet day today ... hung around the hotel most of the day.

Went for a Xmas Buffet at the hotel which was interesting. I’m not really a buffet guy ... I don’t really like them for a couple of reasons:
    - don’t really like bits and pieces food, give me a proper meal!
    - can’t eat enough to really get any value
    - Food is usually crappy

In saying that, we decided to have one for a change. It was pretty good, they had prime rib which I like, most the stuff was pretty nice and they kept replenishing it regularly so it didn’t go cold and manky.

Buffets seem to be the #1 choice of “very large people” and there were quite a few there today, making sure they got their $26.95 worth.

I had effectively a 3 course meal which is far more than I ever eat ... so I spent the rest of the afternoon with food remorse! Haha

We went for a walk around the casino to walk some of it off, there’s not really much going on around this corner of Sparks. The Nugget is pretty busy though, the buffet queue was out the door all day.

Drove down to South Lake Tahoe today.

The state line is right in the centre of the township ... Nevada one side, California the other.

Very pretty alpine town! There are some large casino hotels there, and lots of small hotels. Lots of people vacation here for the holidays, it was pretty busy. There’s a gondola up the mountain right in the middle of the Main Street.

We drove around the neighbourhoods right up to the highest street to get some pics.

Very similar town to Queenstown in NZ, but not quite as “boutique-y” as QT is.

Last night in Reno tonight. We hit the road again tomorrow!

We have enjoyed this area ... from the original misgivings about the shady Cal-Neva casino and surrounding downtown area, we’ve turned around our opinions.

    - The surrounding historic gold mining area is quite spectacular
    - Virginia City is a must visit if you are around here. Don’t forget the surrounding gold/silver mining areas
    - Lake Tahoe was very cool
    - Reno is a very spread out city, we drove around most of it, and there doesn’t seem to be any really bad “don’t go” areas that I saw.
    - Nugget Casino/hotel was totally acceptable and cheap as chips to stay in. $52 a night average.

The local government seems to be making Good progress in bringing big businesses and employment to the area. Tesla’s Gigafactory battery plant opened here this year with 1000 employees and they say it will have 10,000 employees by 2020. That’s gotta be great for the area. We saw other big warehouses for big companies here as well.

Photos taken from the road to Virginia City ... zoom in a bit to see Reno from afar.

You need to come up to Canada. Our ponds, rivers and lakes are all frozen. It's currently -26 Celsius with wind chills of -39 here in North Battleford, Saskatchewan. Haha

Ahhhh .... ummmm .... one day!

Actually, I just remembered we went to the Arctic Circle in Finland for Xmas in 2011 from memory (we met the “real” Santa Claus which was quite an ethereal experience...) ... that was about the same temperatures up there. It was great fun having reindeer rides, dog sled rides and going on the huge tyre ride down the ice track. And we had dinner in an ice castle thing. All the plates and cups were made of ice too. Good times.

We left Reno this morning ... lots of nothing out on Hwy95!

We reached a town called Mina, where I stopped to take a couple of photos of a sign. A local came out of his house and called out, so I went over for a chat. He was an interesting dude called Jeff. He had moved to Mina from Sacramento some years back to free up all his debts. Unfortunately his wife passed last year, so it was just him and his 2 dogs now. He was selling sections for $2000 each ... although so far, nobody had bought any.

We had a 20 minute chat about Trump, how the government owns 80% of the land in Nevada, the alien information that just came out, the Stealth plane Air Force bases in the area, and the big army base on 95 that is the worlds largest ammo dump.

He showed me his 1949 bus, it was the same age as he was. Cool dude.

Then we headed on to Tonopah.

Tonopah is a historic silver mine town dating back to 1900.

First up, we looked at the miners cemetery. There were people buried here who had come from all around the world to hit the silver rush - England, Ireland, Finland, Greece ...

The rest of Tonopah was pretty run down ... there were some abandoned houses that showed glimpses of faded riches.

The Clown Motel looked pretty creepy ...
We noted that it offered a “Clan Room” ... spelling mistake? Maybe ...

The historic Mizpah Hotel sat empty for years, until it was renovated in 2009 to its former glory. You can stay here for $120 a night, if you’re lucky, one of the two prostitute ghosts may come and pay you a visit during the night ...

The other multi-storey building is being renovated into apartments and office space. Evidently, they are building more solar arrays out here so they think people will be wanting apartments ...

Using a phone is so much less intrusive and it means you've always got it with you. Plus easier to post to Pinside!

I used to cart around my Sony Nex5 and lenses, take “good” photos on that and do a quick mimic on the IPhone for the Pinside threads, as I don’t carry a laptop to upload memory card images.

Last night we had dinner at the Tonopah Brewing Company, just over the road from the Best Western where we were staying.

They brew beer which goes around the country, and do BBQ food. BBQ brisket with 2 sides $14, and a glass of their own Red Ale for $4.75.

It was all good! Brisket was moist, not dried out. Recommended!

This morning we went to the Tonopah Historic Mining Park.

The mines in Tonopah were discovered in 1900, when legend has it that prospector Jim Butler was camping one night, and when he awoke his Burro had buggered off somewhere. When he found it he picked up a rock to throw at it, and the rock was much heavier than usual ... He got it assayed and the rush was on.

This was a cool place .. it’s free to have a look at the museum and watch a 20 minute film, and only $5 each to walk around the 100 acres. Although most people just walk around the main bit near the museum (as we did)

First up, you go down to the Burro Mine, where they have recreated a section of mine, and you walk out on a steel platform directly over a 500ft drop to the bottom of the “stope” .. the caverns dug out by the original miners in 1900-1905. These walls are held in place with haphazard looking poles.

One of these pictures, the iPhone is down on the platform grated floor, looking straight down to the bottom.

In another, you can see some drill holes for dynamite, with a metal drill still sticking out where it was left 100+ years ago.

Then you walk over to the Mitzah mine
(Which the Hotel is named after) This was the most lucrative of all the mines.

This big hole in the ground is where a whole lot of mines collapsed. Luckily it happened when the place was abandoned.

Evidently, there are approx 300 miles (!!) of mines dug all under the town of Tonopah in every direction.

If you look at the bottom of the hole to the left, you can see the large mine “stope” (the gash) and another mine tunnel.

Lots of other cool stuff here too ... they built a railway to haul off the ore, the bridge is all that remains of it.

The coolest building in Goldfield was the Goldfield Hotel.

It looked like it has been out of business for many many years, but someone is restoring it. Looks like it’s a one man job ... it may take a while. The brick work is very good condition, if it ever gets finished it should be awesome.

Edit: just researched it, it’s been empty since WW2! A local rancher bought it in 2003 for $360,000 to restore it, and it hasn’t quite happened yet. Lots of ghost hunter TV shows have shot there, as they say it is haunted. Cool!

So tonight Fiona and I trundled off to the other end of town to see the Panth.

House of Blues was pretty packed out downstairs, looked not so full on the seats upstairs. The cheap concert tix were outweighed by the expensive drink prices, but what the hell.

Panth played “sunset strip live” set ... lots
of covers of 80s metal classics, mixed with some Panther hits. They opened with the Crues Kickstart my Heart, played Photgraph, Jump, livin on a prayer, Paradise City amongst others.

Before Steel Panther, the Band was a metal cover band called Metal School, so they know all those songs well. Michael Starr (aka Ralph Saenz) used to sing in the Van Halen tribute band Atomic Punks, and he sounds just like Roth when he does the VH songs. Amusingly, his name in Atomic Punks was David Lee Ralph. Haha

We caught up with Dr John Cosson dendoc and family at KISS mini golf at the Rio. We had a NZ Vs Australia challenge!!

    Final scores:
Adults Golf Winner: Dave! NZ - 1 !
Kids Gold Winner: Danni: NZ - 2!
KISS pinball Kids Winner: Danni: NZ - 3!
KISS pinball Men’s Winner: Dave! NZ - 4!

    NZ 4 - Australia 0

It’s a sad day for the nation of Australia. Flags are at half mast.

But a great day for the wonderful paradise that is ... New Zealand.

KISS mini golf was pretty darn cool! It was all glow in the dark, and the artwork even featured Vinnie, Mark St John and Bruce Kulick. They sure played a lot of KISS music! If you hate KISS ... probably better to not visit. If you like them, it’s great!

Pinball wise, they had 2x Bally Kiss machines, both turned off, and a Stern KISS. The Stern, the scoop didn’t work (had to wait for ball kickout) so you couldn’t change songs or get super-anything, and Gene didn’t register locks. So using my cynical tournament player techniques, I exploited the only things that did work, the 2x hurryups and Love Gun MB to get a score of 93m. Haha!

If you’re in Downtown Vegas, and you want some good pizza, hit up Evel Pizza.

With Fiona being gluten intolerant, pizza isn’t on the menu much in our house. So when somewhere has an award winning gluten free pizza, we’re in!

Both the GF and the normal pizza were 10/10. The place had heaps of Evel Knievel stuff including a pin (which the left flipper didn’t work on, doohhh)

This afternoon we went to the Neon Museum, not far from Fremont Street.

Great collection of classic neon signage from Las Vegas. They have restored a few (but to be honest, not as many as I thought there’d be ..) but it was pretty cool.

They have just been gifted the huge Hard Rock Hotel Les Paul guitar, which is being restored at present.

Then we headed over to Flipperspiel Wonderland ... what better way to end 2017 than with a pinball Comp!

I led the whole tournament until the last round. Nevada State Champ Sean Stewart had to beat me 2 games in a row for the title. First game was Black Rose which I dislike (stupid game..) and its Sean’s favourite so I got cleaned up. It went down to a decider on (of all things..) Roy Clark the Entertainer cocktail pin! I’d never played one before ... Sean had a good lead with 100,000, I came back with 85,000 but it wasn’t enough and Sean took the title! I got a tidy $70 for finishing second.

A lot of you have asked what we are eating on this road trip. Well, actually, nobody has asked, but I’ll tell you anyway!

Wherever possible we grab a takeout salad from Sprouts or Wholefoods, or Walmart/target if we have to. The Walmart ones are $2.50 and are ideal for lunch. We grab apples, bananas, peanuts, raisins, whatever we can and keep them with us. That keeps us away from the dreaded fast food, which is very easy trap to fall into when you’re out on the road.

It’s called the Ivanpah Solar Power Facility. All the mirrors reflect sunlight at a central collector (there are 3 of them) and this boils water to drive steam turbines to make electricity.

There are .... wait for it ... 173,000 mirrors. Imagine walking into an engineering shop and saying “hey, can you make me some mirrors?”
    “Yeah, how many you need?”
“Ummm .... one hundred and seventy three thousand...”
    “shit!”

Very clever. It makes enough power for 140,000 homes at peak time.

Tonight we went to Eric’s Ericpinballfan house in Anaheim.

Eric had a little gathering with some good eats and drinks put on! About 20 punters showed up for pins and chat!

Eric had a cool Champagne Fire, 1 of 70 made for the Hilton Hotel chain with a stained solid timber cabinet (no cabinet decals) He also had a rare euro mini-pin, 1 of 5 protypes made before the 94 soccer World Cup.

Danni loved playing the shuffle board game!

Thanks for having us around, Eric and family!

Then we headed off to play in the Orange County Pinball League meet at Bill Ungs house. Bill created the saucer mod for AFM, you may recall.

Lots of Pinsiders in attendance, Azmodeus Aurich mikeincali Ericpinballfan among others! Some good players too like Jonny Modica and Bob Matthews.

I had a pretty good day! Played 7x four player games and won 5 of them! Came 2nd on Party Zone, it’s be so long since I played one I forgot the multiball strategy. And came a dirty 4th on CC as I’ve never really played one seriously before.

But you gotta be happy with 5 wins outta 7.

Danni unfortunately missed out because they forgot to put her in .. but no big deal, she was doing schoolwork anyway.

Arrived in San Diego last night. Weather had turned a bit and there was a gale blowing.

Staying in this retro 50s type resort called Bahia Resort. One of those places your whole family went to in the 70s. I got it for 1/2 price since it’s off season.

It’s a huge place. They have their own beach, pool, tennis courts, bungalows, they even have a seal pool with 2 seals swimming circuits. (Now there’s a throwback ..)

With the added bonus that the aerial view of the place looks like a big member!

This morning we drove over to Coranado Island.

This is where the famous Hotel Del Corando is, made famous in the 1959 movie Some Like it Hot. One of Fiona’s favourite movies.

This place is huge. Evidently the people that built it originally used to own the whole island. Today the US Navy has half of it as an air base.

Coranado is really nice. The bridge that leads there is super awesome, really high! (Fiona took the photo from the car ...).

Really nice beach. Lots of really nice houses and holiday apartments. Just like the Gold Coast in Aussie... but with way more history and way less tackiness lol

Then we got to the point of today’s driving ... the Salton Sea.

    What an amazing place.

Originally, it was part of the sea that covered a lot of California. Then over the following years, it’s been a fresh water lake, a dry bed, and now a salty sea.

It was pretty dried out back in 1905, when Californians tried to divert water out of the Colorado River to use for irrigation. Unfortunately they totally ballsed it up, and the resulting 2 year (!!) torrent of water flooded the area, creating the “sea”. Yep, it took them 2 years to block the river up.

It’s Californias largest lake (actually not a sea at all)

Originally, it was all fresh water (from the river) and they built resorts along the side of the sea in the 1950s. It was quite the place to go!

However, the underlying Salt bed (from when it actually was the sea) and overflow from agriculture has made it as salty as the sea, and polluted. All the tourism has disappeared. All the fish are dead or dying. Often 100s of dead fish wash up on the sand.

The place smells bad, reminiscent of a bad public toilet.

It’s quite a weird place to visit.

Firstly, it stinks ... but after a while, you get used to it.

The water level is way down on where it originally was .... I’d say around 2 meters down from where it was in the 50s.

They created waterways around the streets, all the houses have their own jetty to launch a boat into the lake. ALAS! The lake water is now so low, it doesn’t flow into the waterways any more. So maybe if you’re lucky, you can take your boat a couple of hundred yards up to your mates place. But no lake jaunts for you!

Lots of people still live there, some of the houses on the waterways are quite nice. Most still have their jettys out the back. However most lots are bare ... makes you wonder what happened to the houses that were there.

You can see what they had in mind, Desert Shores has a cool layout ...

Unfortunately, Mother Nature (and mankind...) had other plans ....

Developers spent millions in the 50s installing water, roads and infrastructure for “the Salton Rivera”

When the sections went on sale, they sold 32,000 of them! These days, only 3000 people live in the whole area.

Check out this stunning late 60s promo movie from the developers ... it sure sounds awesome. Imagine what the land would be worth now if the lake hadn’t gone bad. It’d be way more attractive than Palm Springs ... if only ...

Aside from the smell, Desert Shores was quite a cool place. It’s very quiet, and quite a calming place to be.

Unless you’re a conspiracy theorist, because all the “chemtrails” would make your head explode.

    Quoted from MrArt2u:

Did you make it out to Salvation Mountain and Slab City?

    Yes Art! Yes we did!

Salvation Mountain is quite the place.

The story behind it is quite the story. To cut it short, one day in 1967, Leonard Knight was at his sisters house, who was very religious.. when he left her house, he started chanting the Sinners Prayer over and over and decided to dedicate his life to spreading the word of the lord!

First off, he decided to make a giant hot air balloon .. but after years of work it never flew.

Then he made his first Mountain, but after years of work it all fell down!

So he started on this Mountain.

He died in 2014, but volunteers continue to keep the place going, which according to the guy we met today is a 365 day a year effort. It rained yesterday so he needed to repaint some sections today. The paint basically holds the whole thing together. It’s made of hay bales and adobe clay. Usually you can walk on it, but not today.

    Quoted from swinks:

it looks like it has windows, can you go inside of it?

Yes, he built the part on the right side as his house. But he never lived in it, preferring to live in his truck instead.

Generally visitors can go in there.

The guy was telling us, one day Kylie Jenner and her bunch of buddies came to the site and started carrying on. They went inside the dome and started drinking and of course instagramming everything. The guy told them to “get the f**k out” They of course were “don’t you know who we are?” so the guy said “I’ll get the locals to come beat your ass!” and off they went.

Literally 1 minute after he told us that story, some athlete looking dude and this wanna be kardashian girl show up and started talking really loudly and posing all over the place for Instagram photos. After every few shots, they’d gather around the phone to make sure the photos made them look super awesome so everyone would be very impressed.

When we were at the next destination, they showed up again, and the girl changed into a completely different outfit in the car, and they started off all over again.

What’s becoming of the world ...?

Salvation Mountain is located in an area called “Slab City”

It’s an abandoned army base. It was called Slab City after the slabs of concrete left behind.

Now Slab City is the home to people who live “off the grid”

There are around 150 permanent residents, but in winter the numbers can swell to over 1000. They live in camper vans, RVs, and a very few in larger mobile homes. There is no power or town water or sewage on site. Very basic living. In the summer the temps can be 120 degrees.

In the middle of Slab City is East Jesus.

East Jesus is a refuge for artists, you can go there to check out their wacky creations. The artists live on site out the back.

    http://eastjesus.org

Most of the art was pretty cool, mostly made of junk. The wall of TVs was clever.

Firstly, I just wanna say that this facilty has come along very nicely since I was last here 18 mths ago. Banning has the chance to become the USA headquarters for pinball, I reckon. It has everything here ... 500 pinballs, lots of carparking, lots of arcades, lots of toilets, great weather, air con, carpet tiles ... what else do you need?

    Eventful day at INDISC today!

I concentrated on the A classic qualifying, I really wanted to make the playoffs. Today’s qualifying ran 10am - 5.30.

I started the day around 7th after yesterday’s effort. But before long I was headed down, as all the “big names” came over to the classics from the Modern. I kept in the top 24 most of the day, at one stage I dropped down to about 27th and I needed to pull out some really strong games to get back up.

I finished 16th, out of 121 so I was pretty happy with that. Pretty brutal, lots of big name guys didn’t make the cut.

So into the playoffs we went.

I had to play David Riel (world #14), Zac Wolland (world #85) and Ben Clement, an Arizona guy who was a really good player.

First game, Riel chooses Star Light and Ben Clement steps up and smashes 1,300,000 the first ball!! The highest score in the whole qualifying was 1,350,000 .... so we all think “well, we’re playing for second place...”

So 3rd ball rolls around, Ben has got it up to 1,550,000, and Riel has got 1,310,000 as well! 2 of the highest scores of the weekend, in one game.

I had 550k up as I started the third ball. I got on a roll and started MB after MB. Ended up with 2,200,000! Highest of the weekend. Much to my surprise there was a big group of players gathered and watching and they all clapped at the end which was pretty fu**ing cool. I was pleased with the game as it had a lot of control and composure, which is something I’ve been working on.

Alas, that was the highlight. As happens in classics, sometimes the ball runs your way, sometimes it doesn’t. Next up was Supersonic and I barely touched the ball and got 0. It all came down to the last game on Aztec, which was brutal and I only managed third.

So it ended up: Ben 6, Zac 6, me 5, Riel 4.

So I ended up 17th overall.

Bit of a shame after the massive Star Light game, but overall pretty happy with it.

    Banning itself ...

Funny place! It’s only 20ish minutes drive from affluent Palm Springs, and not far from Riverside, but it’s pretty “down at heal”. Some parts are ok but generally it’s pretty dumpy. Plenty of boarded up houses and undesirable looking dudes walking around.

Check out this place ... just up the road from the Pinball Musuem. A huge modern looking commercial park, just abandoned and burnt out. To my “commercial property eyes” this is just unbelievable. That’d be millions of dollars of concrete walls just sitting there unloved and unused. Makes me want to move to Banning and make it live again.

It's kinda far is my only gripe.

Yeah ... I can see that.

But the only reason it exists is because John Weeks bought the whole airport for like $550,000 (a steal..) ... that building alone in LA or OC would be millions of dollars and then it wouldn’t work financially, unless some wealthy benefactor topped it up every year.

Kinda far was kinda a joke when you travel half way around the world to visit the place and I'm just too lazy to get on the freeway.

The girls wanted to pick up something at Walmart, so we went to Long Beach and I noticed that the Walmart was over the road from Me-n-Eds Pizza, where NimblePin had taken me on the last trip.

Me-n-Eds is a ma and pa pizza franchise joint, started in 1958. At one stage, there were a heap of them, including some up in Canada. They are still around in some places. This one is one of the original ones. It sports a “Ye olde” English theme which is sort of odd for pizza ... isn’t that Italian? Ha!

Pinbot (from Sacramento) arrived safe and sound today.

Rewired it, chucked in some new Corner leg brackets and some black legs, and away she went!

    Quoted from Darcy:

What does it take, to get it to work in N.Z.? Different transformer? Additional transformer?

Williams pins, just changing the plug (I always install a brand new line cord and plug) and changing the wiring on the 9 pin plug down by the transformers. And changing the line fuse down to 4 amp, and changing the varistor for a 230v one.

In the 70s, Bally and Williams pins (well, 99% of them) are international. The one transformer does all voltages, you just need to change the wiring.

Occasionally I have had a 70s Bally EM that has had a 110v only transformer, in which case you have to install a 230 to 110v stepdown inside.

Gottlieb 70s/80s games are hit and miss. I’ve had 110v and 230/110v transformers.

Thanks go out to Crazy CaryCarmichael from Monterey ...

He had some more beer for me to try, so he posted it all the way to New Zealand!

    Crazyyyyy!!

Hard case how the box says “made in New Zealand” !!

The box has gone all the way to Monterey, and all the way back! It’s done like 20,000 miles!

Haven’t tried the beer yet, but it certainly looks cool.

    Thanks buddy!

    Quoted from oldskool1969:

Like most craft beers these days , the label looks better than the taste?
I hope it tastes as it looks.

Yeah, some craft beer can be style over substance, for sure.

The last ones he gave me were good though! So I’m looking forward to trying them out.

Right then I knew my decision to send beers to RD was a Crazy Good Decision.

    Indeed it was! And appreciated.

    Quoted from CaryCarmichael:

Or don't, but please be aware I cannot take responsibility for your pinball skills after downing that can.

I don’t drink when I’m playing ... bad bad move!

I’m saving your beers for this Sunday night ... when Pincade is over, 130 people have left my house, the chaos has subsided, and I can finally sit down and slam a few beers!

    Beer review!

Saturday night, after a hard day of pinball work, I cracked open the first of Carys beers.

“Metal Clothes” - described as a Bourbon barrel aged Belgian quad.

Boy oh boy, rocket fuel! It was 15%!! You could definitely smell and taste the bourbon. It sorta tasted like bourbon, mixed with cough syrup! I gotta admit, it was a little tough going for a lightweight like me. I kept half of it and shared it around Pincaders on Sunday. The reactions were priceless.

Next up was “No Doy” - American pale lager.

This one was good! Slight fruity taste, 6 or 6.5%, not too strong, very drinkable. Would drink again!

Two more to test - I’ll do so this weekend.

Thanks again to CaryCarmichael for sending the brews!

    Beer Review!

On a hot Saturday afternoon, watching my favourite team, the Mighty Vodddaphone Warriors crush the Gold Coast Titans, what better time to try another of Carys beers?

This one is Hopres Ski Double IPA. Quite the wanky name.

Coming in at a heavy 8%, the first sip is quite strong, quite hoppy. But then the fruit flavours come through and it is quite pleasant drinking. Compared to last weeks 15% debacle, this is like drinking low alcohol beer.

    Very pleasant. Would drink again.

Look what I did today ... I installed the Powerup that Jawa sent me!

The $1.58 Walmart light switch surprisingly fitted straight into my NZ wall box with no modification. A little rewiring action and away she goes!!

    Thanks again, Jawa !
