We caught up with Dr John Cosson dendoc and family at KISS mini golf at the Rio. We had a NZ Vs Australia challenge!!
Final scores:
Adults Golf Winner: Dave! NZ - 1 !
Kids Gold Winner: Danni: NZ - 2!
KISS pinball Kids Winner: Danni: NZ - 3!
KISS pinball Men’s Winner: Dave! NZ - 4!
NZ 4 - Australia 0
It’s a sad day for the nation of Australia. Flags are at half mast.
But a great day for the wonderful paradise that is ... New Zealand.
KISS mini golf was pretty darn cool! It was all glow in the dark, and the artwork even featured Vinnie, Mark St John and Bruce Kulick. They sure played a lot of KISS music! If you hate KISS ... probably better to not visit. If you like them, it’s great!
Pinball wise, they had 2x Bally Kiss machines, both turned off, and a Stern KISS. The Stern, the scoop didn’t work (had to wait for ball kickout) so you couldn’t change songs or get super-anything, and Gene didn’t register locks. So using my cynical tournament player techniques, I exploited the only things that did work, the 2x hurryups and Love Gun MB to get a score of 93m. Haha!

If you’re in Downtown Vegas, and you want some good pizza, hit up Evel Pizza.
With Fiona being gluten intolerant, pizza isn’t on the menu much in our house. So when somewhere has an award winning gluten free pizza, we’re in!
Both the GF and the normal pizza were 10/10. The place had heaps of Evel Knievel stuff including a pin (which the left flipper didn’t work on, doohhh)

Was the Stunt Cycle machine operational? don't see too many of those around over here.
RD, any plans for a trip to Hoover Damn and then the Pat Tillman bridge? The Hoover Damn is about as cool as it gets.

The pre-9/11 tour of the Hoover dam was fantastic, way more access than the current tour. But it's still cool.

We were somewhere in the middle of the damn and the view of the "stairway to heaven" was about as cool as it gets.
We also found out how Vegas started. What do 5000 men do when they're not working?
The film they show you on the current tour is pretty interesting. Note that the big dump trucks were chain drive & had solid rubber tires. Had to have been brutal.

We went there a few years ago. It is pretty damn impressive!
When I first went there in the hearse in 2014, the security guys wanted me to completely empty out the hearse (3 disassembled pins, $1200 worth of PBL parts, and 4 weeks of other crap) before they’d let me drive on the dam. I passed.

"S E X - I know who's next"....
Great song.
This afternoon we went to the Neon Museum, not far from Fremont Street.
Great collection of classic neon signage from Las Vegas. They have restored a few (but to be honest, not as many as I thought there’d be ..) but it was pretty cool.
They have just been gifted the huge Hard Rock Hotel Les Paul guitar, which is being restored at present.
I’d timed the visit to be at 4pm, which turned out to be the ideal time for photo taking.

Then we headed over to Flipperspiel Wonderland ... what better way to end 2017 than with a pinball Comp!
I led the whole tournament until the last round. Nevada State Champ Sean Stewart had to beat me 2 games in a row for the title. First game was Black Rose which I dislike (stupid game..) and its Sean’s favourite so I got cleaned up. It went down to a decider on (of all things..) Roy Clark the Entertainer cocktail pin! I’d never played one before ... Sean had a good lead with 100,000, I came back with 85,000 but it wasn’t enough and Sean took the title! I got a tidy $70 for finishing second.

Then we whipped back into town to catch the NYE fireworks.
The whole of the Strip was closed (and most of the side streets too) so I came up with the plan to go to the top of the SLS Carpark and watch from there. We could get a sweet few of the Stratosphere but not really the other end of the Strip as the buildings were blocking it.

Honestly, they probably didn’t understand the question with your Aussie accent. Fiona has more of a kiwi accent than I do, and she gets a fair few blank stares sometimes. Just “ ....... ?” Haha!
It’s about a 10 minute walk from Fremont, out past the freeway.

Last time I was there I took some shots of different letters with the idea of making some name montages. This one came out pretty good. I think it would cool to make a GAME ROOM sign this way if all of the letters are there. I will take the dSLR next time as the cell phone pics just aren't that good in the evening.
Remember the joystick switch that Jawa gave me for Xmas? That has evidently shown up at Nimbles house, so thanks Jawa!
I was at Walmart yesterday and grabbed a USA light switch. These are 15A so more than enough for a <10a Circuit. I should be able to modify it to fit NZ size flush wall box, and we will be laughing!
This switch cost an astounding $1.59. Lol

A lot of you have asked what we are eating on this road trip. Well, actually, nobody has asked, but I’ll tell you anyway!
Wherever possible we grab a takeout salad from Sprouts or Wholefoods, or Walmart/target if we have to. The Walmart ones are $2.50 and are ideal for lunch. We grab apples, bananas, peanuts, raisins, whatever we can and keep them with us. That keeps us away from the dreaded fast food, which is very easy trap to fall into when you’re out on the road.
rd
Quoted from xsvtoys:It’s rated at 15A at 120 VAC though....don’t you have 240?
Yeah, 230v. That switch is only running 1x 12v transformer which drives a 7w LED MR16 bulb, so I think it should be sufficient.

Travel On!
Quoted from cleland:But you continue to show me places I have not found.......practically in my own backyard.
This often seems to be the case, that a visitor can see things a local might miss, often because it's always been there so locals have never stopped to look at it or perhaps it's always on the "we should do that some day" list.
On a related tangent, one of our local artists created empty picture frames beside the road that make people stop and look at what they are driving past. eg.
26055718_10159715162255612_865792265720139183_n (resized).jpg
Again, many of the locals never see them, but the tourists often do, possibly in part because a lot of the communication about them is via tourist aimed channels like https://visithorsham.com.au/things-to-do/framing-the-wimmera/
Quoted from ajfclark:This often seems to be the case, that a visitor can see things a local might miss, often because it's always been there so locals have never stopped to look at it or perhaps it's always on the "we should do that some day" list
That’s true. And often a visitor will go somewhere that a local never goes. For example, I often drive through the “bad side” of town, often because I don’t know where that is, and that’s sometimes the most interesting part of town.
