Alright, now I got an offer to trade my STTNG for both an F-14 Tomcat and a Fish Tales. Both in great condition. Worthy or no

Add $400 and yes, good trade.

Fish Tales is fun, but I think F-14 sucks....I wouldn't do it. But that's just me.

It may be a technically 'fair' deal as donjagra put it down but I personally would not do it. F-14 is a limited game (IMO) and I'm not sure it would be a good candidate to own for and extended period of time. While FT is a pretty cool pin I don't think it compares to the classic STTNG.

F-14 always seems to get a bum rap and FT is fun. I might have to have some cash too.

I would swap as I love both FT and F14. I wouldn't be happy to keep them both long term if they were my only games as they are both full-on action. I would keep my favourite and look for something to complement it.

Most people want to trade up. I wouldn't let your nice sttng go for two "ok" games. Soon it'll be you looking to unload F14.

I love sttng and am biased though.

i wouldn't do it.

FT and F-14 are indeed very fun pins, but ST;TNG is top 5 pin, and it's in your house. Tough call. Personally I'd keep Star Trek, but that's me.

Hah, you've come do close to unloading that STTNG so many times. My guess is that you love the game but are sick of the troubleshooting. Tough call... I think you'll miss STTNG someday if you do it.

Yeah, that's part of the problem. Again, the glass is off as much as on. I realize maintenance is part of ownership, but there comes a point where it's ridiculous.

i'd have to say no, i wouldn't take that trade.

In that case, I would sell it and buy another classic pin rather than the two you mention in this trade.

I should mention that I would love to own a STTNG, but if you are ready for a change, system 11 machines are awesome. FT is pretty fun too, hard for me to get into though. Could be that I play it in the wild and it is way too steep.

No, I wouldn't do it. I like FT and F-14 too, but STTNG is on a whole other level, IMO.

Don't do the trade.

Then buy mine so I can get a few System 11 games

the glass is off a lot on most of these things. sttng is a bit more complex so it will need more tlc. seems like you are on here every couple days trying to unload sttng. maybe you should just go for it.

I know I've been a pain in the ass. Sorry

Keep the STTNG for sure. It is a Top 20 pin and keeps going up in value. Unless you're a really big fan of FT and F-14 I don't think there is any reason to even consider this trade. If you're really tired of the maintenance on STTNG sell it off and get another nice top shelf pin with the money.

Just my two cents...

Go Rangers!

I was in Southlake last week. It is way too hot down there. And unfortunately too far to transport a pin.

i see on your profile that f-14 and Fish Tales is on your wish list.and sttng is your only pin right now.
i say play them both a bit. there is always save some cash and pick up 1 or both later. they made a butt ton of f-14 and they are reasonably priced. Fish Tales i dont see as often where i live. just dont do anything you will regret later.

No no, not at all. But i can see that you sold a Simpsons too. Maybe the deep rulsets arent your bag? I LOVE my f-14. I havent played ft, but i know its desireable.

That could be part of it. I really like fast paced games. I gravitate toward them when I go out to play

Sounds like you need an Iron Man there, Mr. Phatsaqs!

Oh and for my two tokens, DON'T SELL!

Tough call, I see all sides. Remember that once dual pin ownership happens it gets serious.... You will have TWO machines to maintain. That being said having the variety is awesome. And really those are two rock solid machines IMHO as far as general reliability is concerned, I think most would agree on that. I've never played a STTNG, but I love the show. Will have to check one out some time. If there was any $ on top, even a little I would be very tempted. I personally think SYS 11 games rock, and want to make many a focus of my collection.

Fish Tales is fun, but I think F-14 sucks....I wouldn't do it. But that's just me.

I was gonna say the Same Thing !!! FT is Kool !! F-14 ( Suck's ) I've had it 3 Time's, and i turned my 4th down for $ 450.00 .. STTNG as a Trader, Take yr Pick ( Almost )

FT + $1200. Forget F-14, although I've heard good things.

STTNG is just not my bag.

If sick of STTNG and wanting a change up I would do it. Just make it an even value swap and don't look back. I too got sick of STTNG maintenance issues and moved mine out.

There are SO many great games out there don't you want to try as many as possible? 5 plays on location doesn't cut it, you need 30, 50, 100 plays to really get to know a pin. Even Gilligan's Island (worst excuse for a pin ever IMHO) was great fun for 50 plays. And if you are in/close to a big city when you bore of one there is always another pinhead around that wants to give it a try. Pins are EASY to move provided they are 100% functional and priced at market value.

What I have found is that I haven't ever really missed a game anywhere near as much as I thought I would, the new one in it's place has a way of soothing that pain. Addam's Family was my first love, had it for 5 years, thought I would never sell it. 3 years later and I don't regret it for a second.

I say do it...I even think the value is about right (around here, STTNG's don't move very quickly above the low $2k level).

Very true, great post. So many games I thought I would miss (LOTR, IJ, TZ, WH20, Shadow, etc) and honestly I really only miss IJ (and LOTR slightly just because I want to beat that game). But neither enough to really actively search for them. I've found that if you're not playing a game now, you won't be playing it in 6 months, so what's the point of keeping it if there are other games out there you want to play? Once you reach the point of 'not actively playing' on a game, it just takes up space, in fact it prevents fun...fun you could be having with a game you actually play.

I think a lot of collectors get caught up with getting 5 or 6 games A class Williams games that are perfect and fill up their game room (I call it rgpidous, lol, the thought that only class A williams games are the only ones worth having)...afraid to sell, they'd rather keep a game that they don't play then try something new. I guess I don't see the point of keeping a bunch of games you don't play. Maybe one or two that have special sentimental value. They're there to play, that's it. They're not status symbols, investments, etc.

Are people really having that many issues with ST:TNG relative to other games? I've had mine for almost 5 years, other than a trough issue and one cannon issue, the game has been rock steady over several 1000 plays. No worse than any other game I've had.

We had one at my old workplace that was never any trouble in the 2 years i was there with it.

My STNNG is working perfectly right now except for the left VUK that feeds the flipper. Sometimes it has a hard time getting the ball out. Then the machine will go into ball search mode as if it doesn't know where the ball is. I'm guessing it is a combination of a flaky opto as well as a mechanical issue with the VUK itself. I've tried adjusting it and re-flowing the solder on the coil, but it didn't help.

I would say No Deal!

Replace the coil sleeve on that, it should fix the issue. On that VUK, if it doesn't get it up the first time, it goes into ball search...I don't think I've ever seen it retry. It might be the spring as well, if the plunger doesn't drop all the way back down, it won't have enough force to get the ball out. But usually, just replacing the sleeve will work. It's also possible that you have the wrong coil there, that can also cause issues.

btw, back to the original question, no I would not make that trade. If you're trading for something like Jurassic Park and Stargate, then it would be tempting, but F-14 and Fish Tales? No way. Frankly if you're having issues repairing the game and keeping things running, you'd be better off to just trade for a cheaper stern, like Ripley's, Nascar, etc, or throwing in more money and getting a nicer one. Trading for two older games is just going to multiply your issues, not reduce them. The newer Sterns are a lot more reliable in home use than those 93/94 era and older Williams games (basically because they have a lot less to go wrong).

Two years and counting for my STTNG and only a broken plastic from an airball. I did deal with ball trough opticals just over two years ago but that isn't specific to this game.

F14 is awesome. I don't like FT myself. Value wise, I would say the the two plus $300-$400, depending on condition.

Don't get too put off by the maintenance of your sttng.

As for the trade, it obviously appeals to your, regardless of what others might offer opinions on.

If you are not in the position to buy another, I would say do it solely in having two machines will keep you more interested than just one.

I would not do it

If you LOVE Star Trek, I wouldn't do it. FT is a very fun game though.

I say just get more machines and keep STTNG. Some variety would do wonders for your appreciation of your machine. Plus, if you plan on having a collection eventually, I bet you are going to want STTNG in it.

Here in southern Ontario Canada STTNG is a$3500- $4000 Pin So Noooooo WAY!
FT=$1800 Max, F-14 $1000 Max.

Speaking strictly dollars and sense, here on Pinside it's coming up with STTNG at a $400 premium. However over on bostonpinball the f14/FT pair come in at a $200 advantage. I really think this is one that is going to depend on demand for STTNG in your area. Around here they sit forever anything higher than low $2k but it sounds like that isn't the case everywhere...
