    Quoted from rotordave:

Actually, I’m more facinated with the story of the hipsters flocking to Detroit to turn the place around.

Arguably, a myth. One neighborhood (let's say Woodbridge), sure. Detroit is a large swath of land. It's gonna take a lotta hipsters to turn it around. Sure, it's gotten better since the 90s with all of the sports teams piled in one spot on Woodward, but it's still shitty hot in the summer and shitty cold in the winter. I don't see the draw that prospectors have been talking about for 25 years (you can buy a building for $1!, etc). Now Ferndale, on the other hand....

    Dunno! Never been there!

That’s why we’re going there - to check it out.

And to check another state off the list.

I think that’ll be the 43rd State we have been to. So the Mrs says, anyway.

I also doubt that hipsters have turned around more than a couple of inner city blocks, most likely. But regeneration has to start from somewhere.

Here’s what I like to see.

This is in downtown Pittsburgh, near the conventional centre where Replay FX is on.

I bet this area was pretty crappy 10-20 years back. Now, the convention centre and the repurposing of these old buildings to Loft apartments is bringing life back into the city.

Here’s a building, tall and skinny, unusable as an office building or factory in today’s society, so they’ve made it usable by converting it to apartments. They’ve added some extra floors up top as well. There were lots of these recent conversions in the area. Nice!

Lots of other cool buildings in downtown. We don’t have huge brick buildings like this in NZ. There was never any companies large enough to occupy them!

Headed along to Kickback Cafe tonight for the traditional “pre Pinburgh” Comp.

It was advertised as sign in at 6pm, start at 7. But I knew there’d be a crazy crowd, so we got there around 5:20. Already there were 40 people there.

By the time 5:50 came around, the queue already went out the door.

They raised the number to 60 players, and still a lot missed out. 60 was plenty for this venue though.

DrJoe is one of the owners, and he made the announcements just after 6. We’d get underway a bit early to accommodate the extra players. Cool Tilt Cycle artwork on the walls ...

But then lost on Demo Man and STTNG to have 2 strikes. I kept alive with a good win on Family Guy, then tilted away my bonus twice to lose on Champion Pub.

Good warmup though, I haven’t played pinball for 2 weeks.

Thanks to DrJoe and pals for putting it on!

    It’s crazy tough.

I remember when I started competitive pinball in 2012 - when you saw someone do a drop catch, it was like “wowwww!! Did you see that!”

    Now EVERYONE can do it.

The skill level of Pinballers has gone though the roof.

The biggest change of course is information. When I was growing up no one around here was drop catching really or shit like that. And if no one did it, then you don't learn to do it because you have no other outside influences. People getting into it now, eXpecially kids, have all the "secret" knowledge right off the bat...and that's before we even get into the home market changing the amount people can play.
Habit breaking is also hard. I can drop catch 9 out of 10 scoop shots on DI because I was doing it form the start. Doing it on TZ is so much harder because I have played it for 25 years NOT doing those things.

    For sure. Pinball 101 DVD.

Same goes for guitar playing. When I was playing Eruption back when I was 12, I had to learn it by ear. I probably still play it half wrong. These days you can go on YouTube and 100 people will teach you how to play it for $0.

So when are you heading to Detroit?

    #72 5 years ago

Right ... so, final day of qualifying at Pinburgh 2018.

As mentioned, I made A, Fiona made C. Which is pretty impressive for her, when you see the other players in C, including my old buddy Whysnow - Hilton’s wife made A finals which was an awesome achievement.

So, I started off with a 6, then a 7. Not great, but solid enough.

Then I had one of those rounds you don’t not want to have ... two games in a row, I barely touched the ball. It’s pretty disheartening to go punge-drain —- plunge-drain —- plunge-drain basically 6 times in a row. Took a 3.

Luckily, after that clanger it was lunchtime, so we fueled up with Jimmy Johns Lettuce Wrap thingys, and 2x cappachinos (!) and came back with a vengeance. Next round, BOOM! 11! (12 is max) Always a pleasure to play with Zen too.

Which put me in esteemed company.

    F5526E05-D284-4F35-BD4A-2E0AC5F4F480 (resized).pngF5526E05-D284-4F35-BD4A-2E0AC5F4F480 (resized).png

So - the equation was, all 4 players in my final round had a chance to make A finals (top 40 players out of 843 ...) if they got a 10 or 11 or 12. Of course, one of these 4 players was Trent Augenstein ....

    C6B5A997-902D-42BE-B268-6631691933AF (resized).pngC6B5A997-902D-42BE-B268-6631691933AF (resized).png

And he duly whipped our asses with an 11. Actually, all the games were really tight, for example Cirqus Voltaire which was 12m, 11.7m, 11m and 10.5m. Unfortunately I was the 10.5m. Haha. And Doodle Bug - a lottery game, from memory the scores were 52k,42k,38k (me),32k.

So ... I finished down the A list after that round.

    Whaaat you gonna do?

    I know! Hit the piss!

PS Fiona’s is the wine. She was so exhausted... “I don’t know how you guys do this shit!”

Haha! She finished mid pack in C. Pretty good when you see the people who finished down below her.

So, 3am in the morning and Saturdays ReplayFX is over.

What a huge undertaking it is by the PAPA guys and locals like Jon and AJ Replogle, Doug and Elizabeth, Mark, Petey Hendricks, and all those other guys, who take vacation time to make it all happen.

All slightly crazy to run an event this huge!

    But thanks for doing it!

    It was pretty sweet.

And KEVIN MARTIN! Without whom none of this would be going on at all. The unsung hero of pinball.

Cool to see a Disco Fever pin at a show.

Cool to see a Disco Fever pin at a show.

There were like 400 pins there, so you saw a lot of different pins from most eras.

Like Orbitor 1 - the greatest pinball idea and worst pinball idea all rolled into one.
