I am starting to put together top and bottom. There is a very weak point in the Playboy Playfield: it is the post located right to the side of the Special/Extra Ball switch. That post is submitted to the Pop-bumpers on one side and from direct hits from the bottom of the playfield.
DSC03395 (resized).JPGDSC03395 (resized).JPG
As you can see, the original hole has been enlarged by the repetitive impacts of the ball. The original mounting is done using a wood screw post, by Bally. Of course, after a few thousands of plays, this post gets dislodged and the wood breaks causing the post to float and break the plastic above. To remedy that weakness, I decided to mount instead a machine screw post, which is a lot sturdier.
All you have to do is extend the existing hole by drilling from the top, with a 4 mm bit.
DSC03396 (resized).JPGDSC03396 (resized).JPG
The T-Nut is inserted gently and secured by the traditional wood screw:
DSC03397 (resized).JPGDSC03397 (resized).JPG
The Switch bulb/socket is then placed back to its original position and voila... It is a little bit tight, but everything fits perfectly:
DSC03398 (resized).JPGDSC03398 (resized).JPG
From the top, all is good and sturdy now:

Small progress but still worth an update: the three pop-bumpers are back in place and their wiring has been completed:
DSC03400 (resized).JPGDSC03400 (resized).JPG
DSC03401 (resized).JPGDSC03401 (resized).JPG
As always, trying to get a clean and reliable wiring harness.
DSC03402 (resized).JPGDSC03402 (resized).JPG
DSC03403 (resized).JPGDSC03403 (resized).JPG

Next are the drop targets mechanism, the grotto ejector, ball return ejector and the two flippers.

Great progress as you will see. The underneath of the playfield has been completely re-wired and every switched light has been tested. The Ball ejector and flipper mechanisms are connectorized for ease of maintenance and to allow their future installation in a comfortable way:
DSC03404 (resized).JPGDSC03404 (resized).JPG
DSC03408 (resized).JPGDSC03408 (resized).JPG

The Drop targets mechanism has been rebuilt, cleaned and new targets installed. Unfortunately, I purchased these new targets about 13 years ago and they are of the wrong style (capped), instead of being of the Tombstone kind. I am not even sure you can find Tombstone style for Playboy, even though the original ones are of that kind. Unfortunately, the paint is faded and damaged on the originals and I could not re-use them:
DSC03405 (resized).JPGDSC03405 (resized).JPG

Here is the infamous grotto ejector device, that makes this playfield incompatible with all Bally cabinets of that era:
DSC03406 (resized).JPGDSC03406 (resized).JPG

Another view, showing the neat cabling, tightly attached all over the places:

After the back, it is time to work on the front:

DSC03415 (resized).JPGDSC03415 (resized).JPG
DSC03409 (resized).JPGDSC03409 (resized).JPG

And to check the General Illumination lights by connecting the playfield to the power supply of my Mata Hari:
DSC03411 (resized).JPGDSC03411 (resized).JPG
DSC03412 (resized).JPGDSC03412 (resized).JPG
DSC03413 (resized).JPGDSC03413 (resized).JPG
DSC03414 (resized).JPGDSC03414 (resized).JPG

I have not re-installed the wood rails yet, as they are not painted. I do not have a paint booth and do everything outside. The weather has been so cold in NC that I could not spray anything. Maybe we will have a couple of days in the high 60's to allow me to finish that painting.

Great work Yves! Glad to see some new posts.

#57 5 years ago

Just a detail. I am glad that CPR reproduced that specific plastic....

And a couple of these little ones which are so prone to breaking..

Guess what... The temperature got around 64 this past weekend! A miracle! And thus I was able to paint the wood rails:
DSC03419 (resized).JPGDSC03419 (resized).JPG

The ball ejector mechanism was re-assembled after a thorough cleaning:
DSC03420 (resized).JPGDSC03420 (resized).JPG

And the ramps and cap of the Pop-Bumpers were re-installed:
DSC03421 (resized).JPGDSC03421 (resized).JPG

The Flipper mechanisms and the Apron are next...

Yves

#59 5 years ago

Flipper mechanism have been completely overhauled and re-installed:
DSC03422 (resized).JPGDSC03422 (resized).JPG
As always on all the restorations I do, Flippers are connectorized for ease of maintenance:
DSC03423 (resized).JPGDSC03423 (resized).JPG

The Apron is the next piece before testing the playfield.
Yves

Connectorized?

#61 5 years ago

Oh I see it now.

They say, Necessity is the Mother of Invention. Since we need a Bally Cabinet to try that Playboy playfield, I only have at my disposal the Mata Hari that I restored recently. Mata Hari is older than Playboy and does not have certain wires installed that are required for Playboy. However, it should work overall.
DSC03424 (resized).JPGDSC03424 (resized).JPG

All the GI bulbs are working perfectly, as expected. This is not rocket science. Now, for the switched lights, apparently Mata Hari having a lot less switched lights than Playboy is missing a bus or two to access the Lamp Boards. The nest result is that a handful of lights are not working (I now they are good, because I tested them individually). On the Solenoid side, everything is working fine. On the sound side, I have disconnected the Chime unit on Mata Hari as I do not wish to hear (and see...) what the CPU may be sending to the chime solenoids. So, it is a silent game.

Other important thing: I have removed from under the playfield, the Grotto ejector mechanism as it requires the supporting rail on the left side of the cabinet to be cut. I have no intention to butcher my lovely Mata Hari cabinet. So, we can play without the ejector, and I will use my fingers to kick the ball out of the grotto.

Since this is a "risque" interpretation of the politically correct Bally Playboy, let's enjoy some Pinball Porn without further words:

DSC03430 (resized).JPGDSC03430 (resized).JPG
DSC03431 (resized).JPGDSC03431 (resized).JPG

The game plays very fast, on that SprayMax2K clearcoated playfield. It is a true pleasure and I have to admit that I don't have much time to enjoy and admire the curves of these centerfolds. Quite a pity.

Now, I need to find a Playboy cabinet (more or less complete - Don't need the playfield obviously)... Anybody ???

Maybe a good candidate for a cabinet.

Any luck on a cabinet yet?

Matt, I have not looked for one yet. I just finished the apron (we had a few hours of sunshine) and completed the playfield.
I will post some additional pictures soon.

Exceptional ! A work of art. Eye Candy.

Yes, I looked into this add. Honestly, it is a little bit far away from Raleigh, NC and I do not see myself driving up to New York to get a pinball cabinet. I will try my luck locally first (2 or three surrounding states around me).

Thanks

it's only 12 hours each way

And so, we come to a conclusion on that playfield repair and enhancements. The Apron has been repainted, decals carefully glued and new score/rules cards printed on manila papers.

It has taken me a long time to finish this project for multiple reasons. The original playfield was purchased about 15 years ago, quickly dismantled, parts stored and plastics purchased from CPR. The "naked" board was then cleaned up and improved, graphically speaking. And then, it waited about 13 years for a clear coat solution that I could use at home, without investing an arm and a leg into specialized equipment that I would use once in a blue moon. Spray Max 2K came along: I jumped on that technology and have been so happy.

What it was:
PB-01 (resized).jpgPB-01 (resized).jpg

And what it is:
DSC03473 (resized).JPGDSC03473 (resized).JPG
DSC03474 (resized).JPGDSC03474 (resized).JPG

Quite unique in itself. Now, to find a donor cabinet and the main organs. Please feel free to chime in if you hear something....around North Carolina and the surrounding states.

I thank you in advance.

Looks great. I enjoy following your work. I found this funny when looking at your photos (see picture).

Also, Pinball Resource has new plastic credit lenses for the apron. Next time you get something from PBR, add one or a few to your order.

If you find a cabinet around me, let me know. I have a friend that travels to NC a few times a year.

Finally, the playfield in its new cabinet:

DSC04741 (resized).JPGDSC04741 (resized).JPG

Working perfectly. I just wish the ball would not go so fast as to leave me some time to admire the perfect anatomy of these two ladies....

For those who wonders what is the board with all these LEDs on, it is a new regulator/Solenoid drivers board that I designed for my Classic Bally machines. You can find more information about it at https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/oh-no-another-bally-classic-solenoid-and-regulator-board

Thank you Matt. Yes, I am very happy too. A couple more pictures:

and of course, the Mata Hari, that we restored together:
