All,
I have had several people contact me asking how I like my Xtensions arcade, and decided to just create a thread for everyone. A few months back, I got an Xtensions arcade build out of a company office that couldn’t deal with the headache (I’ll explain). The unit is built by n2fun, and I am 99% sure this is just a built out Xtensions system (correct me if I’m wrong someone please.

N2FUN Xtensions Build:
It is amazingly fun, but the build quality is sub-Ikea, and the controls are glitchy/constantly break. I believe retail on a unit like this is around $3,500.

Construction: I got it fully assembled. Upon close inspection, it is particle board, peg, and allen wrench assembled furniture. My old Golden Tee (my only cabinet to compare it against) is built like a tank compared to this thing. It’s not a real arcade cabinet.

Controls: The controls work seamlessly from game to game and it is all programmed well. However, the build quality of the controls themselves is abysmal. I am about to order replacement parts to replace individual components as things keep breaking… like a lot. I have to disassemble the machine, and unplug-plug in all the connectors to get things working right these days. Between myself and the company, it’s only been in existence and used for maybe 6 months.

Artwork: They are decals and they look nice.

Computer: It works fine and plays everything with ease.

Games: There is an 8tb hard drive with this that has 60,000 + games. It has every arcade game, including the 3-d ones made before 2005. It has every console game made prior to PS3… Yes, it has every single PS2, NES, Sega Dreamcast, Atari, over 100 systems of games. It has all the old MS DOS Games, windows games, etc. Want to play Beavis and Butthead, King’s Quest, Ultima Underworld? It’s all there. Want to play the Mario Kart Arcade game? It’s there too. Some things like light gun games and wii games won’t work for a lack of proper inputs, but it’s all there. Overall it’s fantastic if you are not picky about the build quality, but the controls are driving me crazy and I will have to work on fixing them. My only issue with the games is that it has EVERY arcade game and EVERY game built for most of those systems. Some are amazing, some are garbage, and, some of them are weird Japanese porn. I can’t let my young kids pick stuff out because no matter how many I remove more seem to just pop up. I’m guessing maybe 1 out of 500 games on here are weird old Japanese porn, and I have no way of removing them all at once. The screensaver is cool on the game, but if once an hour weird Japanese animal strip poker comes on I have can’t leave it on.

Arcade 1 Up Pi Conversion:
I had one of these before the Xtensions and it is by far the best bang for your buck. It had 18,000 games, and went up to about 1995. It’s not a full size cabinet, but I paid $800 for mine built by someone on my local facebook and sold it for $600 a year later. I definitely had more than $200 worth of fun on it. Due to it being a dedicated Pi setup, it was much more reliable and I never had the control issues I’m having now with that one.

Golden Tee Conversion:
I never finished it, but if I was starting over I’d do my own custom build. Well, I’d buy someone elses used MAME computer that was already set up, drill out a control panel, and build out a custom machine. I might also live with a Pi-based version.
If you want to see other options or try to build your own machine, you can download all this stuff yourself and possibly infect your computer, or buy a hard drive with all of the games on it off of… ETSY of all places. I had bought one (I already sold) off of there when I was looking at converting my Golden Tee and there were lots of custom built options.
All in all, I am not a fan of the build quality on the XTENSIONs stuff. I really like the fully configured computer that worked with the controls from N2FUN, but the controller itself has been a giant headache.

Here is a too long tour of my cabinet and build. Upon further review enjoy staring at my backside.

I have a full size xtension arcade from recroom masters and made it into a hyperspin mame cabinet. I really like it and bought their virtual pin cabinet as well. I dont play either of them anywhere near as much as my pins, but I like them. And during parties everyone always wants to boot up old arcade games.
