I am starting to work on my Xenon that I purchased from a fellow Pinsider in a package deal when I was looking to find Bally Lost World. I bought both games from him, Xenon was not working, Lost World was. He never got around to doing anything to the Xenon, so I made on offer on both and he agreed. Xenon did not come with a MPU, but everything else was there.

Checked all the usual stuff, fuses replaced them all, bad connectors that kind of thing and hit the switch again and it lit up, but blew a fuse F2 on the rectifier board in the process. Ended up that the diodes were bad. I can not solder boards very well so I bought a new board, installed it and checked all voltages and everything checked out.

I then hooked up the driver board and turned the game on and check voltages there and all was good and thing actually lit up. I then took and Alltek MPU out of anther game and installed it to see what would happen with that. I got the correct flashes and and the game stayed on, but would not play . There was a bad connector on the MPU so I did a little work on that and got the game to play. No sound as of yet, but at least it plays.

So now that I know it plays, I have started the tear down to do what I am calling a makeover, or freshening up. Not going to call it a restore, but it should look nice and play well when done. So I am not sure what you want to call it.

I am going to try to do this on a budget and post as much as I can. I don't know that I have really seen a post, and to be honest I did not look, on what it can cost to freshen up a game and make it look nice. I thought that maybe there were other folks out there that my be asking the same question, "can I clean up a game on the cheap?" I am not talking just shopping it out, I am talking sanding it down and repainting, cleaning up or replacing the playfield, cleaning everything up and making play well.

Now I know what you are thinking..."what did he pay and what this supposible budget?" Well I paid $1100 for both games so I am just going to split it down the middle and call it $550 for the Xenon. I am going to try really hard to not get too carried away to keep costs down and we'll see where I end up.

I do not have a bunch of fancy equipment, like paint sprayers, high speed buffers, sonic cleaners, but I do have a cordless Black and Decker sander and drill, small parts tumbler and an air compressor that I use to blow the dust of everything with and basic hand tools that's about it. Pretty much the same stuff everyone has.

So I make no claims that this is the way to do it, or that this is a how to do it, or I am an expert restorer. This is just how I am doing it, and we'll see where it goes and how much is cost.

Slow progress on cabinet but getting better and so does the transformer area. I did buy some sand paper and some paint, so I am keeping a running list of what I buy.

Are you missing a Backglass ?

#5 5 years ago

Too cold to sand outside today so spent most of the morning cleaning the coin box trim and shooter rod parts. My methods are a little out there but they work for me. So some before and afters.

Yeah I can buy new carriage bolts for the door trim, but just put them in a drill and spin them with 400, 600, and 800 sandpaper and polish with Meguiars and they look good. Same with the shooter rod.

The bucket of water was clean dawn dish soap and 409 to clean the cabinet wiring harness, water is not clean now, but the harness is.

No I have the backglass. It is inside my house.

Nowadays difficult to find any decent project games for $550, much less a classic Bally like Xenon. I'm seeing around $1200 for Xenon and $1500 for Bally Playboy as asking prices...often with missing boards, heavy playfield wear, and peeling backglasses. They are out of their minds trying to ask, that. They think every classic can be restored and command some godawful amount like $5500+. ....and they sit unsold.

Good for you and your reasonable purchase at a good price, enjoy the refurbishing journey.

Thank you for that. I am really going to try to do this as cheap as I can so if I do want to sell in the future, it won't cost someone and arm and a leg.

Love the early Bally SS pins!

#10 5 years ago

Can't wait to see it finished! Such great game.

If you want I could probably work on those boards for you. I'm looking for something to do over the winter anyway.

Also, if needed I have a bunch of working bally 6 digit displays and a 5 digit that work in this.

Great job. You don’t need to spend huge dollars to get the job done.

The metal parts look great! Can you share how you got them looking so clean?

Yeah I stabbed or cut myself on something, don't even remember now. Small price to pay to get a machine looking good.

#17 5 years ago
Quoted from Scoot:

I basically just soaked the part in my bucket of Dawn and 409. And then hit the trim with a 0000 steel wool pad and then used my Mothers polish to shine them all up, with my drill buffing wheel.

The coin door hinge got sanded down with different grades of sandpaper then buffed like above. You can still see some scratches in it, but when it's installed you won't really see it.

#18 5 years ago

Well another bad weather day today so no cabinet work. But there is still plenty to do inside.

I started to work on the coin door. I think that this is the worst part of cleaning. Lots of small parts and they always seem to be rusty and covered in some sort of goo. I made sure to take a lot of pictures because this only goes back together one way.

Coin box skin is dented and bowed, so I will try to straighten that out as best I can

I did get the coin slot area disassembled, cleaned and reassembled so it is looking way better. Just a lot of elbow grease and time. I did start with a fresh bucket of soap water.

Money spent today...0 ( I'm sure that will change)

More progress on the coin door today. Cold, rainy and windy again today so more indoor cleaning.

Worked on getting out the bow and some dents the coin door skin. Buffed and cleaned up nice. New one is $89.99 so staying on the budget I'll use the one I got.

Did spend some money today on 3 cans of primer and some Evaporust stuff and a plastic tub for soaking parts in. I saw a post on this rust removing stuff and thought I would give it a try on the parts pictured and some others and will report back on how it did.

Also worked on the wiring harness for the door and have that cleaned up as well.

+1 - just be sure & clean any old grease & gunk off of the part BEFORE you put it into the Evaporust bath.

#22 5 years ago

After a nights soaking in Evaporust the results are in. I am actually pretty happy with how it worked compared to the before . There is still pitted and discolored areas in the metal but all the rust and crud is gone. I'll be using it again for sure.

Hi Big Al...didn't really want to call it a restoration. So I wasn't sure what page to put it on. Is there a way to switch without having to repost everything?

But while I am here I did get a lot done today. Coin door completed. Turned out pretty nice. And then onto the next nasty rusted item

After an overnight soaking in Evaporust....the locking bar mechanism got buffed and reassembled. Some pretty deep staining and pitting in the metal from the rust, but still better than it was.

Finally a nice day outside to sand. Temp was still only about 30 degrees, but the sun was shining, and a slight wind so not too bad. Still a lot more sanding to go, but I at least got started on it. Used up all the batteries I have for my cordless sander so I had to stop and get those charged back up.

Looking good, very tough to keep to a budget on these (for me anyway), I'd say your doing fantastic thus far!

#28 5 years ago

Thanks, going to try real hard not to spend too much and see how nice I can make it.

#29 5 years ago

You did a really nice job on your coin door, have you ever considered re-graining the stainless steel? Doesn't cost that much for a few sheets of sandpaper. I also do that for the lock bar in side rails. Really makes the game look so much better.

#30 5 years ago

Great, following, love Xenon and hope to get one some day, and your work so far is excellent.

#31 5 years ago
Quoted from stashyboy:

Well the stuff that you will see outside will get more attention, like what you are talking about. But the stuff that you won't see a whole lot will just get a real good cleaning and then a good buffing but nothing like new.

Thanks for the kind words on the coin door. I appreciate that.

Spent more time sanding today and fixing flaws in the wood. Nothing real bad in that regard, but I think I am about ready to get the cabinet primed. Got a lot of the inside sanded and clean up as well. Sorry no pictures, not much to see really.

I am considering doing different colors than what were original. Just have not made up my mind on what those will be. Keep ya posted.

I also added up what I have spent, on stuff that I have used so far, and I am at $154.00 Total cost of game so far $704.00

#32 5 years ago

I know you are doing this for you...but I would highly recommend sticking to stock colors if you ever intend to sell it.

I don't know I think we talked about this in Altoona. I'm still on the fence about it.

I’d say go for it! You can always change it later. Besides, this is your pin, do what makes you happy.

Well.... I guess I am staying with the factory colors.

Got side tracked working on my Lost World translite, there is a separate post for that, so I am back to Xenon. I am hoping to spray primer maybe on Thursday so taped up the bottom of the cabinet.

Also have been working on some of the playfield stuff getting it all cleaned up, drop target were nasty, but cleaned up fairly nice as did the assembly and the pop bumpers were just as bad, forgot to take a picture of that, but they look nice now too.

More later..........
