Early Bally flippers don't use transistors. Check the lower right flipper it should have 2 switches. The one farthest from the coil controls the upper flipper. It should be open until the flipper activates and then it closes activating the upper flipper

It works fine but then it hit me… do I need a diode or is there already a blocking diode in place.

Check pinwiki to see if you need a diode in this application
