Hello,

I've put a deposit down on X-men pin, which would be my first pin ever. Even though the seller seems very reputable I'm a bit nervous that there are going to be issues with it that surprise me (again, being my first pin and all). Since it may not be tactful to post the sellers info and pictures of the pin in the thread here.. I was wondering if someone could please PM me if they are willing to check out the pics in order to try to spot any issues and help me with pertinent questions to ask the seller?

Thanks in advance!

Hey gang,

New X-men Wolverine LE owner here (which also happens to be my first pin). Glad to join the club!

I got it home yesterday and noticed a few issues I was hoping to get some direction on:

1. Over the course of only a few games there were multiple instances where a ball got 'stuck' on the wolverine magnet (not stuck under wolverine itself, but actually on the magnet)... the ball just sits on the magnet and after a bit, the game starts going through the motions of trying to find the lost ball. I have to slide the glass out and give the ball a slight nudge to get it off. I tried searching this topic for this issue and found a reference to the magnet being stuck on requiring a board replacement, but not sure if this is the same issue. It doesn't happen every time, other times wolverine (the magnet) 'grabs' the ball for a moment and then lets it go, which I believe is the expected behavior.

2. When I went through diagnostics only the pop bumper flasher doesn't appear to work, however in the game when the ball hits the pop bumpers they do flash, or is that not the same thing?

3. I have a slight chip around the playfield scoop and was thinking about getting the cliffy for that, though there is a disclaimer that it may affect the ability to go into the scoop if the ball is moving slower... this seems like an ok trade-off to me. Does anyone have experience with the cliffy there that would be willing to chime in on if it's worth it?

4. Anyone install the carbon fiber ring from Cliffy that goes around the wolverine magnet, covering the wood? If so, I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on it. Seen on the bottom right on this page - http://www.passionforpinball.com/XMen.htm

Lastly, I installed the sound package from FatPanda and love it! Seems like a great pin overall with some depth to unlock over time.

Thanks in advance!!

p.s. I'm definitely planning to install the newton ball mod and replace the magneto and wolvey figures. Echoing what many others have said, I just don't feel like the jibe with the overall sharp aesthetics of everything else in the game.

Quoted from FatPanda:

First, congrats on the pickup!
1) the next time it happens, turn off the machine. If the ball drops, theres a problem with the game holding the magnet on. If it stays on the magnet, the ball is magnetized and will need to be swapped out with new ones. Ballbaron.com has great balls (insert joke here) you'll want to get the Carbon steel balls.
2) Pop bumpers have wedge bulbs in them. They should light up when the pops activate and I believe in attract mode.
3) The cliffy will block the ball from rolling in 90% of the time. I would live with the chip exposed personally than put a cliffy on. I have the Mantis protector and highly recommend it. No scoop wear on my game with it.
4) i have the carbon ring on mine and it works well.

Thanks!

1. It did end up being a magnetized ball, so thanks for the tip. I went ahead and ordered some new round metal things from ballbaron.com.

2. It's weird, they do seem to light up when the pops activate but not when I do the test. I'll need to investigate a bit more.

3. Thanks for the tip, I ordered a mantis protector for the scoop and a cliffy for the out-lane.

4. Ordered the carbon ring.

#11854 3 years ago

I personally find the pro trans-lite to be more attractive than the Wolverine LE backglass.. I'm curious if anyone with an LE also picked up the pro translite just to swap in and out at their leisure? I was thinking about it, even if it might clash slightly with the wolvey LE blue side rails..

#11856 3 years ago
Quoted from NeilMcRae:

1: change your balls, suspect they might be magnetised
2: did you have the coin door open?
3: cliffy is fine
4: yes, removed it on a couple of games as it causes airballs.

I ordered some new pinballs, thanks. I did have the door open, but I needed to in order to hit the buttons to do the light tests.

I ordered the carbon fiber magnet cover so we will see if it results in air balls for me, thanks.

I put a magnet mylar over the Cliffy ring to stop the edges from peeling up and a cut down tapered post to help the Cliffy[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

So there is an issue with the edges of the Cliffy carbon fiber magnet ring peeling up?

#11860 3 years ago
Quoted from Audioenslaved:

It isn't too hard to install I found that the plastic was a little tight to install and where you put the posts in was really tight too! I think they could've used posts with hexs around the base to make it easier to install but it works and I'd highly recommend it!

Can I ask how in the world you got the posts to screw in at all? They are so tight I can’t even get them started by hand.

#11862 3 years ago

I’m not finding instructions to install the mantis protector on the blackbird scoop.. is it as simple as removing the mech, installing the protector from the bottom (screwing into the wood) and then throwing the mech back on? Thanks

#11869 3 years ago

Looking for a little commentary on the mantis protector.. I bought it because I had some chipping to the right of the black bird scoop (pictured) but after I put the mantis in place I realized that it's more to protect the wood inside the scoop since the mantis is not raised high enough to actually prevent the ball from smacking down where the PF art and scoop wood meet (i.e. where my chipping is occurring).

Am I missing something or do I really need a cliffy to protect against further chipping in the highlighted area in the pic??

side note: the mantis protector hasn't been screwed in yet, but it is loosely in place and pushed up about as high as it will go. I also plan to touch up the black paint where it's chipped and put some hard as nails over it (since that was recommended in this thread and seems to make sense).

FatPanda since we had been chatting a bit on this topic in PMs

Quoted from bartron:

It has been noted in previous posts on this thread. The mylar covers the edge of the ring , so should stop it from happening.

Thanks, however it kind of raises the question of... is there an actual benefit to having both? i.e. if you need to install mylar to protect the carbon fiber ring from curling up.. why not only install the mylar to begin with and skip the carbon fiber ring altogether?

#11875 3 years ago
Quoted from bartron:

The ring hides a little wear around the magnet pole. Also there is a raised lip from the ring. The mylar smooths everything out.
The game does have 10,000 plays on it
[quoted image][quoted image]

Thanks for commenting. I see you showed the magneto spinning disk, do you also put the mylar there as well? I was thinking that adhesion might be an issue due to the rough texture of the disk. .

#11877 3 years ago
Quoted from bartron:

No. This is a Pro so no spinning disc.
The spinning disc just gets dirty and doesn't wear like the Pro.

Ahh, durk, yes I see now that it's a pro. Thanks again.

The magnet in front of wolverine on my table is askew. Ive tried multiple magnets so it’s not the magnet. If you look closely at the pic of the shiny side closest to the camera is slightly above the playfield while the other side of the magnet is slightly below. Anyone else experienced this? I assume it should ideally be perfectly flush all the way around.

Nevermind. I futzed with the magnet mount screws and strategically added a few washers to even it out.

Quoted from Alex1061:

Hi Snappy,
I had this problem years ago on my machine and the only way to silence my OCD and get it level was to shim the magnet brackets underneath the playfield with washers-spacers I made out of thin plastic, a bit fiddly, worth it in the end.....cheers

Thanks, I actually ended up doing the same thing, but with a few metal washers. I also had to strategically tighting/un-tighten certain of the four bolts a bit to get it level... but I'm fairly confident it's all good to go now. I must assume a warped magnet mount is to blame.. would hope it's not the playfield or the hole drilled for the magnet that is skewed.

I have an issue where one of my night crawlers is uneven. The front of the plastic, closest to the apron, is a little higher than the back (enough to cause air balls). I checked and the bolts for the mech are all tightened down.. is there away to adjust the ‘tilt’ of the night crawlers? Anyone else had this problem and how did you solve?

To be clear it’s not a matter of raising or lowering the mech, it’s actually uneven some front to back. Thanks in advance.

I made an updated version of the FatPanda sound package which adds an Ice Ice Baby remix I created for when the Ice Man mode activates. Nothing else is changed. Big shout out to FatPanda for creating his awesome sound package in the first place.

Quoted from FatPanda:

Have you been able to actually play the game yet?

Hah, yeah, i've *finally* been able to put some games in. There were a number of mods done to it already but i've done the following:

- Newton ball mod (still need to install replacement wolverine)
- Cliffy shooter lane protector
- Cliffy carbon-fiber magnet ring w/mylar on top
- Mantis protector in scoop
- Touched up chipped paint around the scoop and went over it with three layers of poly
- Replaced magnet
- Did the post mod (replaced all except for the rogue shot because even the 1 1/8" post was too tall for the plastic to fit over and I didn't want to fool with drilling a hole in the plastic or grinding down the post.)
- Replaced all GI lighting/flashers with comet LEDs
- Put pink lights in the pops because it goes with Gambit aesthetic so much better than white (highly recommend this)
- Installed plastic protectors
- In process of replacing magneto figure
- Removed all the ramps and cleaned & waxed everywhere
- ... whilst using a pair of needle nose pliers trying to get one of the new posts in that was very tight it slipped and gouged a small spot (about the size of a bb) in the PF all the way down to the wood :*(... it was a stupid thing to be doing because it was predictable if the pliers slipped they were obviously going towards the table with force. Lesson learned.. don't work around a pinball playfield with tools that could do damage when you are tired and frustrated (duh). I mixed some acryllic paint to color match the area and went over it with a few layers of poly. Thankfully it's right by a post in a spot where the ball will never touch, and you wouldn't notice it while playing... but i'll always know it's there. (doh)

It's my first pinball table so doing all that was quite the learning process... glad it's done. Already thinking about table #2... don't want to wear out X-men due to it being my only pin so I HAVE to get another 1, or 2... or 3... amiright?

Quoted from J-Freeze:

Haha I did that too, I'm adding a few other changes as well.

Nice! I'd be interested in what you come up with.

Quoted from J85M:

Is there a figure most people use for the Newton ball mod or are people using all different figures? Thanks

I recommend the Revoltec Wolverine and Magneto. You can find cheaper ones from China on Ebay.

#11925 3 years ago
Quoted from LesManley:

Hey fellow X-Men owners. Could someone please do me a quick favor and take a picture of how the lower part of the left ramp attaches to the metal post right above the top pop bumper? If you just lift the playfield, set it on the rails and take a picture that would be super helpful. I am putting my game back together from a shop job and everything for that ramp connects, but there is about a 1" space between the ramp and hex post in that spot so I am not sure how it goes back together. Everything else has fit snug, so I am not sure if there is something missing there. Appreciate the help. Thanks!

Don’t know if you still need it but hopefully this helps. The tall metal support/spacer is what holds up the ramp and it goes all the way down to the playfield.

Quoted from DParcade:

Okay, I have to come out and admit my frequent idiocy in the hopes that it helps some other fool in the future. I was playing with the optos in test and noticed that actually there were two optos showing active. Turns out, last night when I was tired and soldering the coil nice and tight I actually hooked up the molex connectors to each opto backwards. Fortunately, it doesn't appear to have done any damage...just gave me a firm lesson in taking pictures before I take anything apart!
Now I'm left to enjoy the X-men and contemplate this Color DMD addon...

I found your post when trying to troubleshoot the same issue, 'Locating Pinballs'. In my case it was that one of the sling bulbs had come loose and fallen into the ball trough.

Finally got the Revoltech Magneto installed! Have a purple flasher pointing under his cape that lights up the cape and looks pretty awesome. I used some moldable wire to mount Magneto and the light and a bit of hot glue to keep the figure in the right pose. It’s also pretty easy to remove Magneto if needed for maintenance.

Next up, Wolverine!

Props to FatPanda for being the pioneer on the Revoltech figures and offering me some installation tips.

Looks great. Any pics lit up? Are you using Revoltech for Wolverine as well?

Thank you. I’ll hafta try to snap some pics when the purple flashes, I don’t think it ever stays on for any length of time. Maybe I’ll just take a video.

Yep, the Wolverine is also Revoltech..both my magneto and wolverine came from EBay/China but the quality of both is fine.

Quoted from judremy:

Try getting some pictures in flasher test mode.

I've got it dissasembled again to do a few minor things but I'll snap some pics once it's all back together again.

#11937 3 years ago

What size LEDs do people recommend for the back panel lightning (i.e. the 6 bulbs on the storm panel)? Seems like adding some higher power lights there could really add some needed brightness.

#11938 3 years ago

One more question ... especially after replacing magneto and losing the red LED in his hand shining on the magnetic spinning disc area.. I find that area to be particularly dark and not well lit... any thoughts about adding additional lighting there somehow?

#11948 3 years ago

Finally got it put back together + extra spot light behind wolverine and got wolverine mounted. Snapped some shots of magneto with the purple flasher underneath him going off. I think it looks pretty cool.

When I had him removed magneto had an accident so his form isn’t as cool as in the last pics.. need to futz with it more but am sick of messing with it for the moment.

This is probably more of a general pinball question but posting it here since it's on my X-Men... is my playfield warped? I had it sitting in a room for about 5 months where it was probably a little uneven but nothing drastic. I knew it needed to be adjusted but wanted to wait for it to be moved to it's final resting place before really dialing it in. Well, I finally moved it and now have been trying to get it level but after much adjustment I find that the pitch near the top of the playfield is 7.0, the middle is 6.5, and down by the flippers is 6.0... ?? Any advice? This is my first pin so consider me a noob. I'm using the pinguy app on my phone for leveling. Thanks in advance.

I recently picked up an X Men pro which has the newton ball mod installed where the big Wolverine figure used to be.
Is there a consensus replacement figure to plop on top of that thing? THe original figure was bashed beyond use.

My vote is for the revoltech figures.
