Hi folks. Joined the LE club. This is a good game, really glad I got it.

But the game makes an insanely loud “clacking” noise whenever the blue/white GI go off. I think it’s the relays under the playfield making this noise. But why? During the game, whenever I hit a “light lock” target (the ones by Magneto”, I get the clacking. I’ve never experienced this on any machine. And it’s not the minor sound some games make (LOTR for example) when the lights strobe or whatever, this is LOUD and unusual.

Any hints or advice?

Thanks.

Quoted from bballfan:

I think the noise you are hearing is the spinning disk.
You will need to add an e-clip onto the shaft underneath the playfield.

I’ll check that. I have my doubts though. We’ll see. Thank you for the input!

After reading that thread and watching the YouTube video, that looks - er, sounds- exactly right. So looks easily fixable.

I appears I have the alt sound for game, which is mostly terrific, but the Storm callouts are still kinda ridiculous. That’s the cartoon Storm?

I dig this game a lot. But it’s very dark. Does anyone have ideas and pictures of ways they’ve improved the lighting in the game and brightened up the playfield?

#11617 4 years ago

Thanks for the good suggestions. Added lighting is tricky, with the ice ramp moving and not a lot of places to add spot lamps. I do have a lot of Comets, probably from 2-3 years ago, but probably brighter than the first generation

Re music: has any one substituted the actual version of Layla for the one in the sound remix?

I got my XMen LE last summer, and I suspected it would be gone by now. Or that I’d be planning to move it in Spring. Not a chance. In this day and age, with “toys on a spring” and too often little else on the playfield, XMen LE is a revelation. I’m loving it, especially as a compliment to MMr. Great game to change up with. Fun and challenging.

My wife and daughter even like it. And that’s highly unusual.

What are all the ways to get EBs? And also to qualify the two mini wiz modes?

3 weeks later
#11757 3 years ago

Man, for some reason I thought there was a super wiz beyond DP and DR. Bummer! That really would be fairly unlikely to get to though.

Only gotten to Dark Phoenix once and it was short lived! I keep saying “only Villains this and it never works! I’ll never be a great tourney player because I’m a little ADD and love to wing it.

#11767 3 years ago
Quoted from luvthatapex2:

Damn thats some playing! combos are so satisfying in this game. here is a complete list
Beast to Xavier = “Sharp minds!” (2 shot combo)
Beast to Rogue = “Beauty and the Beast” (2 shot combo)
Beast to Wolverine = “Savage Animals” (2 shot combo)
Beast to Storm = “Meteorology” (2 shot combo)
Cyclops to Xavier = “Teacher’s Pet” (2 shot combo)
Cyclops to Storm = “Gold and Blue Leaders” (2 shot combo)
Cyclops to Rogue = “Power Drain” (2 shot combo)
Cyclops to Wolverine = “Rivals” (2 shot combo)
Iceman to Xavier = “Brain Freeze” (2 shot combo)
Iceman to Beast = “Angry Yeti” (2 shot combo)
Storm to Iceman = “Hailstorm!” (2 shot combo)
Storm or Xavier to Phoenix to Wolverine = “Unrequited Love” (3 shot combo)
Storm or Xavier to Phoenix to Iceman = “Fire & Ice” (3 shot combo)
Storm or Xavier to Phoenix to Cyclops to Wolverine = “Lovers Triangle” (4 shot combo)
Xavier to Cyclops to Storm to Wolverine = “X-Men Leaders (4 shot combo)
Fun fact. There were supposed to be 16 unique combos but one of them was scrapped since the shots could not be linked together properly. (Original XMEN)

I like the combos in the game. They get lucrative too. I’m not sure if I’ve ever done them all in a game or not. Any way to tell? And does anything happen? That would be a cool mini game, if there was a combo mode after you made all the combos.

Also, I seem to be finishing Storm by hitting Xavier, and maybe even some other random shots. Is my game misbehaving?

This means the last switch on the Storm ramp is too sensitive.

Thank you sir. I’ll check it out.

Finally got to Dark Phoenix! Had no idea WTF was going on. It’s like it’s own little 3 ball mini game? I think...?

I’d been playing awhile and couldn’t hit the shots by then. I only had Wolverine to complete - always difficult for me - to get to Danger Room, but I choked. 362M and change. 6M off my highest.

#11800 3 years ago
Quoted from plankalkul:

Holy crap! That's a ripper of a game!
Wolverine is EXTREMELY hard to acquire for me. I'd say I'm somewhere around one out of three times do I get it. I love how you have to hit either side, especially when trapped up with two balls on a flipper, and that's the side you need to hit. Cradle separation is huge, and on my machine, it's always a challenge. Plus, since I've cleaned it, post passes from either side are no longer a gimmie.
Dark Phoenix as I misunderstand it (SPOILER ALERT)
I think you have to survive that mode, something about shots to the orbits will decrease the time. However I really can't say because the last two times I've gotten there, I've hit a bug in the software that just craps it out. Shame, that. So you might have hit the bug, might not have.
thefamilyarcade , what is your mode/stacking strategy with villains and heroes? You have heroes stacking on or off?
I've locked into my strategy until I find a better one, which is start up, soft plunge and beat on Brotherhood. Did you know you can get Brotherhood solid without activating the ball saver? So I'll get that going, start villain (Sabertooth) and try to get xavier going.. usually I'll either start xav and complete, or start wolverine by mistake, and stack Wolverine and Sabertooth. Shots are the same for both of those so it kinda makes sense. If I don't get Wolverine and I haven't made significant progress elsewhere, drain it and start over.
Would love to hear some stacking strategies!

When I first got the game I had stacking on, but it just seemed so random. Was never really sure what I was doing and why a mode would finish. Racked up some great scores though. Turned stacking off to learn how to play each mode, and enjoy the game more this way. More satisfying, as I feel I need to accomplish everything and not just randomly finish something without even knowing what I did.

I briefly went back to stacking after learning the game, but turned it off quickly.

As far as heroes go, I prefer to finish Beast, Xavier, IceMan and Cyclops first if possible, just because I know I’ll start Magneto before I want and these jackpots will probably be easier to hit. Beyond this I don’t really have a strategy for the heroes. I do stack them with Villains when possible. Aside from Stacking Saber with Wolvie, I usually start with Sentinels or Juggernaut, because the shots seem more straightforward for those two. I leave Hellfire and Brotherhood for last, so I can easily light Villains by hitting those targets.

The damn multi balls are just so hectic in this game, what with the layout. I find them a little frustrating, just because I feel out of control too much. For this reason I think it’s a great game for learning control. I just haven’t learned that yet! Lol.

I’m still not sure I understand exactly what a blinking or solid hero light (or red arrow) does on the shots themselves. And sometimes my Rogue shot doesn’t activate, especially if I nail it for the skill shot. Is the switch in a place that the ball just misses sometimes, or is my switch less sensitive than it needs to be?

I also think the playfield is too dark and wish it was more colorful and less monochrome. I think if the playfield art was more vibrant and interesting - and if there was RGB inserts - this game would be considered great.

#11806 3 years ago
Quoted from judremy:

This is an issue with the ball ridiing the ball guide and going over the switch. You want to make a plastic piece that you can put above the Rogue shot that prevents the ball from going up too high. I used a spare plastic from White Water's Whirlpool shot ball guide plastic. I keep meaning to put up a video of my setup for this game. Maybe I will do that tomorrow and record it tonight.

I find this real interesting, but am having trouble visualizing. If you can show a photo or video that’s would be great!

#11807 3 years ago
Quoted from plankalkul:

And this is exactly why I want to get a Cliffy for it. This'll make the game a bit harder... IDK about your scoop shot, but mine can be a major dick. Clean shot, KONK, SDTM.
Question for all the players, how is post passing on your game?
For the longest time, right to left was easy breezy, left to right from a cradle never worked. Kind of like most Metallica's I've played. Then I did a wax/cleaning job, and unless it's rolling in the nook between the flipper and inlane guide, you're not post passing on this game. Left side was always like that. It's certainly made my Ice Man a little more tricky, I can't post catch anymore for a gimmie on a post pass, I have to live post pass over to the left.

Post pass easy on mine. Cliffy over scoop is annoying. I may remove it.

#11815 3 years ago
Quoted from LesManley:

My cliffy has a groove in it on the left hand side that allows the ball to access the scoop without having to travel over the cliffy. It's nice.

I get it, but it is kind of cool seeing the balls fly off that thing in different directions at the start of an MB.

The LE is loaded. What’s on the pro?

#12009 3 years ago
Quoted from Malenko:

The disc doesn't spin, so on magneto multiball the balls spread and fall towards the flippers. I think the LE disc is neat and would be the only LE feature I'd want on my pro. The Iceman ramp moving has zero appeal to me, and the Night Crawler trolls look like they would really mess with flow.
I think I found the magneto Im going to use ...if it fits: amazon.com link »
Ad says 7" tall so I think I may have to cut into the base a bit.

Why don’t you like the moving ramp? It’s cool and adds a bit of a challenge. Actually adds to game flow when used. It’s under used in my opinion. Same with Night Crawlers. There’s two mini modes when there’s used, and because they’re the primary objective when in play, they don’t impact flow at all. In rare cases a ball can get trapped behind the left one, and you need to wait for a coil cycle.

I can’t imagine the game without these features. Otherwise the game would seem GoT like barren in terms of lack of features. Hopefully the pro still has the cyclops spinner?

#12013 3 years ago
Quoted from rotordave:

Moving Iceman ramp rules.
Watching people shoot it when they shouldn’t and their ball flies off the end is priceless.
Xmen is one of the few Stern games where I prefer the LE (or premium) to the Pro.
90% of them, the Pro is the better shooter/game. Xmen pro is still very cool (I played one last weekend) but I like the LE “accoutrements”.
Hey, just my opinion.
rd

This.

#12015 3 years ago

Someone above said that the pro was loaded almost as much as Met. How? 3 flippers and 2 magnets? What moves on the pro? Besides the spinner.

#12045 3 years ago
Quoted from Malenko:

I finally got to the Danger Room mode..... hit the middle "magneto" shot and the ball released SDTM , whomp whomp.
I did add a piece of polished stainless steel that goes along the right drain, from the apron all the way up to the 3rd flipper.
It brightens up the lighting under the plastics and just looks really neat along the drain.
Its kind of tough to take pictures of , it kind of just blends in, which was the point. I figured seeing "special" mirrored would be the easiest way to show it.
[quoted image][quoted image]

That’s really cool. The game is a little dark, that seems to brighten it up some!

#12048 3 years ago

I’m staying in the game. XMEN is experiencing a renaissance in my household.

What’s the best color DMD option?

1 week later
#12051 3 years ago
Quoted from rotordave:

Hmmmmmm where to start .....
It's a challenging game. I like challenging games.
Lots of shots. Tight shots. Makes you play better.
If you go back to the beginning of the thread, you'll see I liked it from the start. A lot of others bought the game, found it too hard, then their egos told them if they couldn't play it properly, the game must be crap. In truth it was them that was crap. . At one stage, probably a year after release, I was one of the only guys pushing how good the game was.
There's been a lot of crapping on the code, and in truth Stern was very very slllllowwwww with the code updates. But nothing has changed in that regard, check out STLE code ... But Xmen still had the killer layout.
Awesome art too. I have a Magneto and everyone who sees it just goes wow. I'm so happy they used the cartoon characters rather than the Movie guys. Movie guys date fasssssst. The art on Xmen is timeless. I was in a comic book shop with my daughter a while back, I showed the owner pics of my machine and he almost pissed his pants he thought it was so cool.
I think in say 5 years, XMLE will be seen as one of Borgs best games. If not the best. So much going on, so many modes (two different sets of modes for starters) Whereas a game like Ironman is basically using a hotrodded System 11 ruleset. And hey, nothings wrong with that! I love my Sys11s!
So, after all that blathering, I guess I could sum it up thus ...
If you like to aim the ball correctly and nail the shots as required (or learn to do so...) Xmens one for you.
If you like to flail the ball around willy-nilly and hope for the best, I'd suggest you look elsewhere.

rd.

I really like this summation. I was about to sell the game. What was I thinking?

#12055 3 years ago
Quoted from rotordave:

Posted 5 years ago!
See, I was wise back even back then.
I admit, when you listed your one up for sale I considered importing it here so I could have a matching set. Lol
rd

That’s funny. I’ve been playing it a ton since I decided to keep it. It is such a challenging game, that requires pinpoint accuracy and not just rewards combos but actually requires them to make certain shots. Cool.

It seems so simple, with fairly open playfield (assuming factory Wolvie has been replaced) but it’s anything but.

Unlike many machines, there aren’t any cheap drains IMO, which is great, because you need all the help you can get fulfilling the objectives.

What extra balls are achievable beyond lighting 3 hero’s and 3 villains? I got EB lit last game without doing either.

#12056 3 years ago
Quoted from Malenko:

Anyone have a fix for the LED constantly getting knocked out of spot lights? The LED in the spotlight over the right sling gets knocked out all the time, and Ive had the Magneto LED pop out once or twice from air ball deflections from hitting the big magneto.

ColorDMD, as its the only option. LED or LCD is a matter of preference, Im fond of LED myself.
Pin2DMD has a new firmware to support SAM/SPIKE so I might pick up where CB3 left off and color some more scenes for him.

I checked and only saw an LCD option for X-Men. So I guess the choice is made for me.

#12064 3 years ago

There’s a colorful plastic under magneto that gives off a nice little light show without the huge, stock magneto covering it all up.

#12068 3 years ago
Quoted from mbelofsky:

My game has the LED ColorDMD (which I personally like better than the LCD - but have the LCD on Hulk Avengers, Spider Man, and Star Trek Next Generation).
I also used the original Wolverine to add back on top. I originally did so with large hex posts and a glue gun. But it would get banged off every few months. I then added a metal plate inside and glue gunned it back and it has been much better since.
http://www.purcellvillepinball.com/X-MenMagnetoLE2018.html
If you go to the above page, I document all the work I did on my game including Cliffy protectors, the newton ball mod, adding the Bowen busts for the Beast and Ice Man(and lighting Ice Man), as well as other mods I did.
You can search for "newton" to find the photos and description of the original placing of the newton assembly and Wolverine.
You can also search on "dislodged" to see my photos and description of adding a home made bracket and it working much better. It has been a year or more and this is working out nicely.
I have an extra Wolverine. Brand new I bought as a spare. I actually bought a few years ago. So I used an extra on my game to cut up Wolverine for the newton mod and have the original Wolverine and switch assembly (since I did not want to take it out). This one I paid $125 with postage. So if anyone wants it (would prefer to ship UPS in the USA only), I can send it for $125 plus actual postage to you[quoted image][quoted image]

Did you buy the LED at Color DMD? They didn’t have X-Men as an option for that... only LCD.

#12071 3 years ago
Quoted from mbelofsky:

Yes, I bought it direct from ColorDMD.
i just went on their page and at the bottom it has a page 2 and it shows X-MEN and WWF.[quoted image]

A page 2? Doh!

Thanks!

Now I actually have a decision to make. Why do you prefer the LED on XMEN?

#12074 3 years ago

I had the LCD for my Fish Tales, and at first I thought I got a bad one, because the black looked brown and that kinda bothered me. I do like the extra features, but the idea of brilliant, bright colors against a solid black background has me leaning LED. I actually look at the DMD all the time when playing X-Men, although the clips of the game on the color DMD website aren’t that compelling.

If you change some of the dots with Pinball browser, does the color still work on everything? Or just on the dots from the last official code release?

#12075 3 years ago

Just pulled the trigger on color LED. So stoked. Thanks for everyone’s input!

I was telling myself that when I sold Xmen that I wanted a nice, deep, mode based game to compliment Wonka, which isn’t really mode oriented. And then I realized that I already had one! Playing XMEN more than Wonka now, which is surprising, because Wonka is flat out amazing and I couldn’t stop playing it for months.

#12076 3 years ago

Upgraded some GI to brighter LEDs so I could play easier in the dark. Whoa I had no idea there was such nice lighting effects on the LE! Very cool!

#12077 3 years ago

Added color DMD. Game looks as good or better as anything Stern is putting out now.

Ooooh, I kinda like it! Where do you get one?

I just realized that an opportunity wash lost not to make the Iceman ramp a physical ball lock. Oh well. Still, there’s one at Magneto, which is awesome since many games these days forego them.

Those pin graphics look hot Neil!

#12091 3 years ago
Quoted from cleanandlevel:

that's exactly what I needed to hear. I love my tmnt, it's just a little too fast. I like fast games.. tron, bsd, iron man.. but tmnt is too fast.
thx

I cannot think of a better value in pinball than XMEN LE. Compared to current prices, every LE owner should hold out for $6,500 when selling!

With a color DMD, it’s simply phenomenal.

#12092 3 years ago

In Mag multiball, do you get more points/damage for a finished hero’s shot versus just starting the hero?

I’ve developed strategy for hero pursuit prior to starting MMB, based on whether the locks are lit or not. Go for any shot not lit for “lock” and not near a target that helps lite lock.

Only game I can recall where locking a ball unintentionally or receiving a “lite lock” (Blackbird) award pisses me off!

#12094 3 years ago
Quoted from CrazyLevi:

I prefer the LED screen.
It's cheaper, more durable (I've seen the LCDs crack during shipping), the correct size (I hate mucking about with the huge LCD screen) and it looks better. No brainer 'round these parts.
The lack of "upscale" option is a non-issue for me as I find that it looks incredibly stupid.

I installed the LED version this week and it’s stunning.

#12096 3 years ago
Quoted from Jediturtle:

It is fairly ridiculous that the LEs sell for less than a new pro. I agree that they should be worth $6.5, but that isn't going to happen. And even if it would, mine would be staying put! It's a hidden gem for sure. I honestly think the original Avengers LE is in that same boat. Even more generally disliked than XM, but a nicely tweaked one is another super fun, unique game. People that do not give either game a chance are missing out. Doesn't bother me too much though, I have mine and love them regardless of popular opinion!

I bought AVLE NIB, loved it, lauded and defended it ad nauseam on Pinside, owned it for years. But after hundreds of plays - probably thousands - was happy to let it go. I remember finally getting to the Wizard mode, and nothing was there. No dots, nothing special, just blinking lights to hit - hit same shot twice! - and scores. Lonnie strikes again!

I found AVLE very fun, with awesome shots that felt great, when they weren’t being rejected. But in the end the game wasn’t captivating enough to keep or buy again. And I don’t bother playing it on location when I see it. It was probably more fun and satisfying than XMEN, but less challenging and with less staying power. I know that doesn’t make any sense. Toys and art on XMEN LE are way better.

The cabinet art on my Wolverine is every bit as good as anything Zombie Yeti has done for Stern.

#12099 3 years ago
Quoted from rotordave:

Me too!
I had a blue LE (back when LEs were pro pricing plus 2000ish bucks). I liked the game, but someone made me a good offer for it so put she went.
But look what I just bought for $4000. DMD says 59 plays since new. Guy who collected it for me said he believes it. Lol
rd[quoted image][quoted image]

I’d probably pick up a pro Avengers, to try it. Over here though, an LE is only about $500 more. The LE just got raked over the coals. Unfairly.

I’m almost embarrassed to say what I let mine go for. I think it was a HUO NASCAR plus $2,200 cash. NASCAR’s we’re going for about $2,600 then. SMH.

Which is why I’m keeping XMEN. Why sell it to buy a new $8K+ Stern LE that isn’t as good as XMEN?

#12101 3 years ago
Quoted from rotordave:

Yep, XMen makes the new games look very sparse.
The only thing that dates it is the DMD. Stern should throw a LCD screen in and fix the 2 voices that 2 people bitched about and re-release it. It’s a winner.
rd

The color DMD catches it up quick.

#12106 3 years ago
Quoted from rotordave:

Yep, it’s a great game.
It got flak when it first came out, because the code was basically a shell. Then a big update came out, and it was crap. Plus a couple of people didn’t like 2 call outs (out of 20) so that became “a thing”
But it eventually turned into a great game.
Yes, there are 2 Wizard modes:
Danger room, for completing all the Heroes.
Dark Phoenix, for completing all the villains.
There is an option to “stack” the modes which makes the game much easier. But Levi won’t be doing that.
rd

I don’t stack because it just makes everything seem random. Well, I guess that was back in my early days of ownership, when I was t sure what I was doing. I suppose I could stack now and know exactly which shot to make. Hmmmm.

It is hard to make either Wizard Mode, but particularly Dark Phoenix in my experience.

Hey, I’m not getting the Brotherhood or HC MB rules. I’ve read the posted ruleset. Anyone mind running through them for me?

#12141 3 years ago

Brotherhood and Hellfire Club MB rules, anyone? As previously stated, the existing ruleset (Tilt and other places on web) poorly described how to complete these MBs.

There are 6 MBs in this game. That’s pretty freaking sweet.

#12143 3 years ago
Quoted from CrazyLevi:

The problem is if you beef it, you need to smack Wolverine another dozen times, or 20, to have another shot at it, and you can easily beef those too with some unlucky bounces. Really annoying. Would be much better if, at the least, you picked up where you left off on Weapon X (hold progress), or even if sometimes the mystery award would give you that last X-men or Villian mode you need to make it to the wizard mode (kind of like Monster Bash).
I really like X-men but you see stuff like this on Stern rules of this era and really keeps the games from feeling polished.

Later in the game the mystery scoop will start XMEN modes and it can be Wolverine too.

You know that each time you hit Wolverine the shots switch sides? So all your big hits can be on the right side of the playfield, making things a little easier.

And I’m not positive, but I’m pretty sure you beat the mode faster hitting the more valuable shots.

Damn. Got to Danger Room last night. Couldn’t finish second round.

Why do coders put these AWESOME modes in places so hard to get to? Makes me think MOST multiball coding in pinball is extremely lazy.

Don’t just save the magic for Wizard modes!

The expression on that Deadpool is the same as the dots when he appears in the game. Bravo!

never even once gotten to Danger Room but yesterday I got to Danger Room and Dark Phoenix in the same game.
who is the figure after you get done with the first 3 phases of Danger Room? I didn't recognize him.
Dark Phoenix is an amazing mode, and worth so many points! 150 million off the mode alone. final score was 495 million or so.

Great game!

Quoted from HighVoltage:

I joined the club recently with a Magneto LE. It needed a little work, so while I had it disassembled I did some upgrades. People make a big deal about interactive speaker lights on MBr, check this out.

That is really neat. I like how your speaker lights are converted to the round style. Is that a kit, that covers the square edges of the speaker holes?

If I have traditional lights, can they be modified to interact with playfield lighting?

I also really liked how the mirror blades look with the flashers. I’d wondered if XMen’s playfield was a little too dark to benefit from blades, but I may add them to mine now. I’ve had a pair in box for years. Never used!

I’m clueless on Dark Phoenix. Although I’ve managed to get there twice. You’d think the designer would write out the rules somewhere. But no. Lamest thing about pinball IMO.

I can’t recall a final Wizard mode that actually says “congrats” - or “you win” or whatever when you’re done. Most of the ones I’ve played, IIRC, just end without fanfare. That I can remember, anyway.

Star Wars is an exception. You know when you beat the Emperor and it feels good. I beat SM a few times. I can’t remember what happened at the end but SM is a really good wiz mode and it was quite satisfying. JM’s Wiz mode is fun, and beatable. I’m pretty sure I beat Avengers, but it was a very unpolished Wizard mode, and nothing really happened. I may have beat Transformers, another unpolished Wiz. Got to Encore in ACDC twice. Can’t remember what exactly happened! I’ve been one shot away from beating a few, but I’m drawing a blank on which ones. I do recall being down to the last shot - for a billion - on IJ. That was thrilling. Bummed that I choked that.

When I get to these final Wiz modes I’m usually mental and physical jelly, so I’m not surprised I can’t remember them very well. Or that they usually end soon. Like Valinore. I remember a big points grab and a lot of excitement but drained too soon to understand WTF was going on. I was toast by that point.

In general, I’ve found many mini Wiz modes to be more satisfying than most of the “finals” I’ve experienced. Destroy the Ring and TABA to name two from the same game.

its tied into almost everything to varying degrees, but its never shaking for too long or shaking too hard. You'll notice it right away when you hit the pop bumpers.

Eh, it shakes like a crazy ass mo-fo during Brotherhood MB. Probably more shake in that mode than in any other game ever.

It’s definitely supposed to be a flasher.

8 months ago I took my LE off the market after not being able to sell it for $5,500 - ultimately down to $5k - for a year. Had an unsolicited offer of $4,800 recently.

The game is woefully underrated and ridiculously undervalued. The backglass alone should be worth a grand. Stunning!

#12218 2 years ago
Quoted from Jediturtle:

I agree. X-Men and the original Avengers both are grossly undervalued. TAV I can understand slightly more with it's tight shots and QC issues which take a lot of tweaking, but it really is a great game if given a chance. XM though...man that thing is an "everything and the kitchen sink" game. Sure there are a couple things that could be a little smoother, but there is no reason it can't hang with the vast majority of LEs released in the past decade. Just goes to show how getting a bad rep early on can stick with a machine sometimes.

Yeah, fact is the hobby is full of sheep that care more about FOMO than what makes a good game. That said, there are so many (newer) options (distractions) to choose from these days I can see XMEN getting lost in the shuffle. But with every other LE in existence seemingly going for $7,500 plus (exceptions = Transformers, Avengers and WWE) it’s freaking nuts that people continue to sleep on XMEN.

I suspect XMEN as a theme is past its prime as well.

#12221 2 years ago
Quoted from FatPanda:

With Disney acquiring Fox, (which held rights to XM, despite Disney owning Marvel prior to that) I think XM will be back in the mainstream soon enough. Honestly, it never faded for me and I was always hungry for more XM, even though I'm not a comic book consumer.
I agree with your other points though.

Hey, your custom sound package kicks ass! Thank you!

I hope you’re correct about the franchise getting a jolt. I love my XMEN, but I’ll sell it tomorrow for $7k.

Anyone else notice all this excitement about Rush, and it’s basically XMEN with arguably less on the playfield?

I’m thinking that instead of spending $12k on Rush LE, you could buy XMEN LE, every Rush record ever made, get a killer new stereo and speakers, spruce up your game room with art and new lighting and cater a party for all your friends to come over and play it. And you’d probably have a little leftover to send your wife on a little shopping outing.

And have just as much fun with your game.

#12320 2 years ago

The game is a bitch man. Maybe the hardest game I’ve owned to make Wizard modes.

But the challenge is rich and the game is exhilarating and fun.

It’s also not a hot mess of scoring and random elements like so many recent Sterns. It’s heroes and villains and that’s that. Simple, but oh so difficult.

#12322 2 years ago
Quoted from Ceemunkey:

Yep that's what I've always loved about this game. The rules are so simple but its so damn hard to get to either wizard mode!
See also ACNC which i've also just got recently. Defeat the monsters, and that's about it for the rules. Another awesome game.

Yeah, I’m up for ACNC. I’ve always enjoyed it on route. Great mood game. Great ambiance.

And I’m officially scoffing at anyone who would pay $9k for a DP or GB pro and not even look at XMEN. So many dilettantes in this hobby.

Quoted from DragonLord:

Hi everyone,
I'm a big X-Men fan and considering adding the game to my collection based on my love of the theme. I haven't played the game but have seen there are some pretty tough critics in the online reviews. As owners of the game, what are your thoughts about X-Men as far as gameplay enjoyment? Are there some must install mods and such that you all have found to add significantly to the game? What are some thoughts on pro vs LE models?
Thank you!

There are people that prefer the pro. I don’t see it. The LE kicks ass.

XMEN suffered poor early code (from an industry newbie at the time) and some voiceovers that did not sit well with a highly vocal minority. Both problems are non-existent today. There’s an after market sound package and the code was completed. The code now rocks and the game is “deep” in that there is a hell of a lot to do and accomplish.

It’s challenging or “too hard” as some pinball simpletons might complain. But that’s their problem that they suck at pinball.

One of the best values in pinball IMO. YMMV.

Get the LE!

Quoted from DragonLord:

Thank you for all of the great info! I was thinking the LE to get the magnet-spin disc. I'll keep an eye out for a magneto or Wolverine.
Does anyone have links to the newton ball mod and aftermarket sound package?

Quoted from HB_GAMER:

Anyone still have a copy of the finished rules? Looking for the events that present a extra ball.

HB_GAMER EBs: complete three hero modes and that starts Nightcrawler. Hit the Nightcrawler pop ups a few times to light EB. Same with Villains. Complete 3 to start Nightcrawler, etc.

I’d also like better explanations of the Multiball modes and Wizard modes. The current rule descriptions aren’t clear enough IMO.

I’m playing XMEN LE more than any other game of late. I was trying to sell it for awhile, but now I’m having more fun with it and appreciating it more than ever. It’s a very straightforward game rules wise, but there’s a lot to do and it’s extremely challenging. Getting to the wiz modes is hard, and they are very well choreographed. Trying to get there can be quite addictive, and as of now I’m thrilled no one pulled the trigger on buying my game.

Newton ball, colorDMD, alternate sound mix. Change settings to stackable modes.
Great game, enjoy

IMO, I wouldn’t change the game to stackable hero modes until you understand how to win each hero mode. Very chaotic otherwise. Unstacked also makes the game harder, which is rewarding when you do well. I just changed mine to stackable hero last week, after years of playing them unstacked. No regrets.

I can’t talk myself into selling XMEN LE. Irony is I had it on the market for two years. Now, with many Spike 2 Sterns seeming samey, XMEN feels fresh and unique. 180 degrees from newer games. Damn near retro, and I dig it.

SO, I'm not the only one with the pinduino light show! Such a MUST for X-MEN..(i have a magneto #214 I believe)...I hightly suggest to any owners looking into getting the kit from Erik in Arizona if you haven't seen it work yet..and very affordable for what it does (fully interactive/programable) . I can't imagine playing this pin without it now.

Can you describe what it does?
