Quoted from rotordave:

Hmmmmmm where to start .....
It's a challenging game. I like challenging games.
Lots of shots. Tight shots. Makes you play better.
If you go back to the beginning of the thread, you'll see I liked it from the start. A lot of others bought the game, found it too hard, then their egos told them if they couldn't play it properly, the game must be crap. In truth it was them that was crap. . At one stage, probably a year after release, I was one of the only guys pushing how good the game was.
There's been a lot of crapping on the code, and in truth Stern was very very slllllowwwww with the code updates. But nothing has changed in that regard, check out STLE code ... But Xmen still had the killer layout.
Awesome art too. I have a Magneto and everyone who sees it just goes wow. I'm so happy they used the cartoon characters rather than the Movie guys. Movie guys date fasssssst. The art on Xmen is timeless. I was in a comic book shop with my daughter a while back, I showed the owner pics of my machine and he almost pissed his pants he thought it was so cool.
I think in say 5 years, XMLE will be seen as one of Borgs best games. If not the best. So much going on, so many modes (two different sets of modes for starters) Whereas a game like Ironman is basically using a hotrodded System 11 ruleset. And hey, nothings wrong with that! I love my Sys11s!
So, after all that blathering, I guess I could sum it up thus ...
If you like to aim the ball correctly and nail the shots as required (or learn to do so...) Xmens one for you.
If you like to flail the ball around willy-nilly and hope for the best, I'd suggest you look elsewhere.

rd.

I really like this summation. I was about to sell the game. What was I thinking?

#12052 3 years ago

Question is will Stern ever release Xmen again? Would like to own one some day to accompany my Ironman.

#12053 3 years ago

Probably not. I have seen them for sale from time to time HUO. Best grab one HUO.

See, I was wise back even back then.

I admit, when you listed your one up for sale I considered importing it here so I could have a matching set. Lol

That’s funny. I’ve been playing it a ton since I decided to keep it. It is such a challenging game, that requires pinpoint accuracy and not just rewards combos but actually requires them to make certain shots. Cool.

It seems so simple, with fairly open playfield (assuming factory Wolvie has been replaced) but it’s anything but.

Unlike many machines, there aren’t any cheap drains IMO, which is great, because you need all the help you can get fulfilling the objectives.

What extra balls are achievable beyond lighting 3 hero’s and 3 villains? I got EB lit last game without doing either.

Quoted from Malenko:

Anyone have a fix for the LED constantly getting knocked out of spot lights? The LED in the spotlight over the right sling gets knocked out all the time, and Ive had the Magneto LED pop out once or twice from air ball deflections from hitting the big magneto.

ColorDMD, as its the only option. LED or LCD is a matter of preference, Im fond of LED myself.
Pin2DMD has a new firmware to support SAM/SPIKE so I might pick up where CB3 left off and color some more scenes for him.

I checked and only saw an LCD option for X-Men. So I guess the choice is made for me.

Someone in this thread posted their LED ColorDMD, so you may have to just reach out to them to get that.

My wife is loving Xmen, Ive had it a few months now and she still plays it, other than Comet , that never happens.

#12058 3 years ago

I recently picked up an X Men pro which has the newton ball mod installed where the big Wolverine figure used to be.

Is there a consensus replacement figure to plop on top of that thing? THe original figure was bashed beyond use.

Can you cut the bottom off that one and use it?

You’ll see a few pics of that in this thread ...

Here ya go, found you one.

I’m going to do this myself one day.

I still have the prototype captive ball in mine. Sitting naked and unadorned for 5 years. Lol

Yup...that's my favorite solution, and will be the most durable. Some of the sweet looking statues I have seen people post make me cringe as I know they are only one good airball away from disaster.

Unfortunately I do not have this part.

Just looking for something cheap to throw on the newton assembly really.

#12063 3 years ago

I replaced Magneto today, I had to have the game open to fix the pop bumper behind Wolverine

This is what I went with: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00007FY49/
I bought one that had a damaged box for $40 shipped

Here's Logan and Eric:
magneto3 (resized).jpgmagneto3 (resized).jpg
I was still figuring out exactly how and where I wanted Mags to Riches

and heres how he's in there:
magneto1 (resized).jpgmagneto1 (resized).jpg
magneto2 (resized).jpgmagneto2 (resized).jpg

Dab of glue on the ProfX chute and the Iceman ramps for his arms, and his foot is hot-glued to one of the places a nut goes and behind the Sentinel head. Cape is wedged between the ramps and he is super stable.

I ended up buying that piece just because it came with the big Sentinel head and the game cant have enough giant robot parts.

Both pieces are plastic and wolverine has taken a good number of air balls with do damage other than having to bend his claw back on occasion.

#12064 3 years ago

There’s a colorful plastic under magneto that gives off a nice little light show without the huge, stock magneto covering it all up.

#12065 3 years ago

My game has the LED ColorDMD (which I personally like better than the LCD - but have the LCD on Hulk Avengers, Spider Man, and Star Trek Next Generation).

I also used the original Wolverine to add back on top. I originally did so with large hex posts and a glue gun. But it would get banged off every few months. I then added a metal plate inside and glue gunned it back and it has been much better since.

http://www.purcellvillepinball.com/X-MenMagnetoLE2018.html

If you go to the above page, I document all the work I did on my game including Cliffy protectors, the newton ball mod, adding the Bowen busts for the Beast and Ice Man(and lighting Ice Man), as well as other mods I did.

You can search for "newton" to find the photos and description of the original placing of the newton assembly and Wolverine.

You can also search on "dislodged" to see my photos and description of adding a home made bracket and it working much better. It has been a year or more and this is working out nicely.

I have an extra Wolverine. Brand new I bought as a spare. I actually bought a few years ago. So I used an extra on my game to cut up Wolverine for the newton mod and have the original Wolverine and switch assembly (since I did not want to take it out). This one I paid $125 with postage. So if anyone wants it (would prefer to ship UPS in the USA only), I can send it for $125 plus actual postage to you

I used this one CrazyLevi

It worked great. I used some 2-sided tape on the underside but also a matching blue zip tie to attach it to the post behind. Super stable. Just rip the top off the base.

Did you buy the LED at Color DMD? They didn’t have X-Men as an option for that... only LCD.

#12069 3 years ago

This is my modded xmen pro picked it up with just over 600 plays
Done loads to it got the newton mod but not fitted as wolverines in good shape still

A page 2? Doh!

Thanks!

Now I actually have a decision to make. Why do you prefer the LED on XMEN?

#12072 3 years ago

I personally love LCD for two reasons. LED I find piercing and harsh. They hurt my eyes a bit and seem almost TOO focused and separated to make a nice image. LCD is easier to look at, and has the option of the other display methods. I prefer Dots XL. I like the traditional dot art, and with slightly larger dots it makes for a very nice image. Some people use the "hi-res" setting, and that looks cool on some games, but I find it a little weird. Could just be that I'm used to dots and that's what I want to see. It's definitely a personal preference though, and either one is way better than original.

#12073 3 years ago

LCD is less bright and kind of dull. I tend to like things brighter in general so definitely a personal preference. (My wife asks why I like all the lights in a room on when i am working.) LCD is harder to see at an angle but since the player is directly in front of it, that is really not an issue. As stated above you have options that you don't have on the LED.

LED is bright and vibrant.

I have LCD on
STTNG - set to hi-res and looks good. Wish it could be bright and hi-res.
Spider Man - set to Dots XL. I tried hi res and the video just didn't look right to me.
Avenger Hulk - set to hi-res. It's ok, I would probably be just as happy with LED.

I have LED on
LOTR - I think this looks great with LED
WCS - It also looks great with color dots.
X-Men Magneto - The LED looks good but I find myself not looking at the display much on this game.
Star Trek LE - U looks bright and colorful with the LED.
Flintstones - just recently got this and happy with the LED

Previously had it LED on
Ghostbusters - display was nice and looked great.
Theatre of Magic - This looked great.

For customers (since they can have the cool options I usually get LCD for them unless they care. Then I show them my games, both LCD and LED, and they usually prefer the LED even though they could have all the other modes.) I recently refurbished with LCD:
TZ
IJ
Theatre of Magic - I have both on this game (at different times) and preferred the LED.
they look good with the hi-res. I just think too dm.

You could call me on FaceTime or Duo (Google) if you would like to see all the games and how they look.

#12074 3 years ago

I had the LCD for my Fish Tales, and at first I thought I got a bad one, because the black looked brown and that kinda bothered me. I do like the extra features, but the idea of brilliant, bright colors against a solid black background has me leaning LED. I actually look at the DMD all the time when playing X-Men, although the clips of the game on the color DMD website aren’t that compelling.

If you change some of the dots with Pinball browser, does the color still work on everything? Or just on the dots from the last official code release?

#12075 3 years ago

Just pulled the trigger on color LED. So stoked. Thanks for everyone’s input!

I was telling myself that when I sold Xmen that I wanted a nice, deep, mode based game to compliment Wonka, which isn’t really mode oriented. And then I realized that I already had one! Playing XMEN more than Wonka now, which is surprising, because Wonka is flat out amazing and I couldn’t stop playing it for months.

Super exclusive ad from the Pinside Marketplace!
#12076 3 years ago

Upgraded some GI to brighter LEDs so I could play easier in the dark. Whoa I had no idea there was such nice lighting effects on the LE! Very cool!

#12077 3 years ago

Added color DMD. Game looks as good or better as anything Stern is putting out now.

I just realized that an opportunity wash lost not to make the Iceman ramp a physical ball lock. Oh well. Still, there’s one at Magneto, which is awesome since many games these days forego them.

I'm thinking Xmen is going to be just as good, I'm just a bit worried that since I have a tmnt it will be more of the same...

It plays much different than TMNT. Not to say it's "easy" but easiER. I don't feel like they're mirror images of each other at all. TMNT is faster.

It’s no hemi, but I added some leds. Always thought the pop bumpers looked pretty naked with just the bulb on top through the plastic.

Added some blue pop bumper caps with led light rings. Kept the plastic and bulb in the middle as well.

Right now it has white frosted for the center led. I have pink on order to see what it looks like.

For what it's worth I agree with Guinnesstime. I have both a Wolverine and a TMNT, both fantastic games. You can tell they share some DNA, but they do not feel at all alike to me, even though "on paper" they look like they should. XM is much slower (not meant in a bad way)/more controlled and less brutal than TMNT. And even though the magnet/spinning disc is basically the same mech, they feel very different in use. Hard to explain why.

XM is not an easy game though. I have owned it 8+ years and only hit Danger Room a handful of times and haven't even sniffed Dark Phoenix. Lots to do and I love the two distinct paths you can take. Some prefer the slight extra flow the pro offers. I personally love the gimmics and toys the LE offers. Can't go wrong with either. It sounds like you are a Borg fan, so I can't imagine you not liking this game. Ignore the hate that stems all the way back to the original code and give it a shot. The code came such a long way, but unfortunately the game's reputation never really recovered from those first impressions. Shame, as I honestly think it's one of the best.

#12090 3 years ago

FTR I really loved this game. I just reached Dark Phoenix a few times (don't ask me how. Probably b/c I played it so much). It's a very cool mode. I felt like I saw all I needed to see. I do miss it though. It's a good mix of shots and you can play it casually or seriously and it's not brutal. Love the Magneto MB start. The LE is damn beautiful. Bugs me when people replace the magneto figure with a doll. Doesn't make sense. Upgrading Wolverine is not 100% necessary but I understand why.

I cannot think of a better value in pinball than XMEN LE. Compared to current prices, every LE owner should hold out for $6,500 when selling!

With a color DMD, it’s simply phenomenal.

#12092 3 years ago

In Mag multiball, do you get more points/damage for a finished hero’s shot versus just starting the hero?

I’ve developed strategy for hero pursuit prior to starting MMB, based on whether the locks are lit or not. Go for any shot not lit for “lock” and not near a target that helps lite lock.

Only game I can recall where locking a ball unintentionally or receiving a “lite lock” (Blackbird) award pisses me off!

#12093 3 years ago

I prefer the LED screen.

It's cheaper, more durable (I've seen the LCDs crack during shipping), the correct size (I hate mucking about with the huge LCD screen) and it looks better. No brainer 'round these parts.

The lack of "upscale" option is a non-issue for me as I find that it looks incredibly stupid.

It is fairly ridiculous that the LEs sell for less than a new pro. I agree that they should be worth $6.5, but that isn't going to happen. And even if it would, mine would be staying put! It's a hidden gem for sure. I honestly think the original Avengers LE is in that same boat. Even more generally disliked than XM, but a nicely tweaked one is another super fun, unique game. People that do not give either game a chance are missing out. Doesn't bother me too much though, I have mine and love them regardless of popular opinion!

I bought AVLE NIB, loved it, lauded and defended it ad nauseam on Pinside, owned it for years. But after hundreds of plays - probably thousands - was happy to let it go. I remember finally getting to the Wizard mode, and nothing was there. No dots, nothing special, just blinking lights to hit - hit same shot twice! - and scores. Lonnie strikes again!

I found AVLE very fun, with awesome shots that felt great, when they weren’t being rejected. But in the end the game wasn’t captivating enough to keep or buy again. And I don’t bother playing it on location when I see it. It was probably more fun and satisfying than XMEN, but less challenging and with less staying power. I know that doesn’t make any sense. Toys and art on XMEN LE are way better.

The cabinet art on my Wolverine is every bit as good as anything Zombie Yeti has done for Stern.

Me too!

I had a blue LE (back when LEs were pro pricing plus 2000ish bucks). I liked the game, but someone made me a good offer for it so put she went.

But look what I just bought for $4000. DMD says 59 plays since new. Guy who collected it for me said he believes it. Lol

Talking of low plays ... my buddy just picked up an XMen Pro here in NZ (probably only 2-3 of them here)

Game showed 150 plays from new - still had original code on it! Guy said it looks like new.

The guy who sold it also had a heap of other games, mainly LEs like Met LE and TWD LE, all with <200 plays. He’s got a Hulk LE for sale at the moment too.

Some people must buy these things just to look at ...

I’d probably pick up a pro Avengers, to try it. Over here though, an LE is only about $500 more. The LE just got raked over the coals. Unfairly.

I’m almost embarrassed to say what I let mine go for. I think it was a HUO NASCAR plus $2,200 cash. NASCAR’s we’re going for about $2,600 then. SMH.

Which is why I’m keeping XMEN. Why sell it to buy a new $8K+ Stern LE that isn’t as good as XMEN?

Yep, XMen makes the new games look very sparse.

The only thing that dates it is the DMD. Stern should throw a LCD screen in and fix the 2 voices that 2 people bitched about and re-release it. It’s a winner.
