I thought i'd start a thread over here to stop spamming into the xmen club thread ( https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/x-men )

Basically I've made a mini wolverine bust that is a replica of the existing wolverine figure but will fit onto the newton ball mod.

The purpose was to retain a more original style of the machine while still getting to use the newton ball.
Some other users have said that their original wolverine fitted onto their newton ball but my glass would hit around face level.

I had a 3d printer so thought i'd give it a shot.

My intention here is to *maybe* see if there is much/any interest in making some of these for people.
These would be more of a kit/"self paint" mod.

I might also explore doing a painted version to see how long it take and if it would could be done for a reasonable price.
Or maybe something in between where I do the main colors and leave details to others.

Painting took me quite for the first one but I was learning a few things along the way that I could maybe streamline a few at once.

Will update this with all the pics.

Note: the one below was printed at 0.2mm ~ 10 hours print time.
All newer ones are atleast 0.1mm ~ 18 hours.

I've tried 0.05mm ~ 2 days of print time but they've all failed to get past 50% of the print so far.

Various states of processing.

Latest Update
Workong on mounting solution and hardware.
Will try out melting a bolt head into the base of one of the failed prints.

Print a sample maximum resolution and compare to 0.1mm when painted with primer.
There may be little to no difference once primed for printing so an extra day of printing.

Been working on figuring out how to nicely mount it.

Have put a long thread in the model and a washer to stop it pulling out.

You can either attach with double sided tape or use a mount (preferable) I’m still designing.

The mount sits inside the pop bumper and is attached to plastic that sits on top.

The mount rests on both the inside of the pop and the newton ball cover. This way there should be little to no stress on the plastic itself.

Takes about a day and a half for a single print.

Ive has one print failure so far and that was just a support that broke off mid print (didn’t see it as I was at work).

So 3 partially primed (I do atleast 3-4 alternating color prime
coats) and sanded.

I’ll probably try a batch of 5 before doing any more as they are quite the time sink.

Update.

Hadn't done much in the past week pinball mod wise as I got a new machine so these got put on the back burner.

My first test batch of 4 i've just finished priming and sanding (~ 5 or 6 layers total) and will start with masking and initial painting this week.
Still need to finalize the mount design as i'm not totally happy with it.

Initial thoughts on cost and time required to make the painted ones it's defiantly not worth it from my perspective.

time involved vs what they'd cost vs what i'd someone would pay are so far away from each other its not funny (no one would buy these at $450USD a piece nor would I want to sell them to someone at that price).

I'll take one of them for my own machine and offer another to a local guy near me that wanted one. That leaves the 2 or 3 finished painted ones that can sell at some reasonable price.

I'll still think about the self paint/kit versions on demand if anyone wants them otherwise people can just do what vireland is doing and chop the original.
Those kits should be fairly cheap @ $30~$35 (plus shipping) which I think is pretty fair.

eh ... I think i'll just release this model into thingiverse and let anyone that wants one print it, paint it and mount it themselves.

Work is leaving me with very little time to do any of this and 4 months is long enough to know that I'm not going to get around to it to be satisfactory.

I'll find all the models I have so far (partial mount model) and upload them.

I have 6 available in various stages any aussie guys can have for free + shipping.

Uploaded to thingiverse if anyone wants to print it themselves.

Also makes a nice paperweight (add lower infill to make it heavier).

Quoted from king_pin:

Hate to revive an old thread but you did an amazing job on this and thank you!
Some questions:
What filament did you use in your prints and how durable has this been? Could it take air balls without breaking?

PLA, it was fine. An airball never broke anything.
