I've been working on a sound package for X-Men. I first started off just working on Beast and Storm, but it then soon moved to several of the other characters and some of the mode music. I thought I'd share what I've been working on, if anyone wanted to try it out. The main source voices are from The Animated Series (TAS) from the 90s, as well as some voice clips from video games (MvC3 and some others). If you'd like to try it out shoot me a PM. I will likely still be adding/adjusting things in the future, but it's pretty good as is. When there's a final version, I'll update this thread.

***UPDATE***

Here is the final version of the sound package that I've been working on:

PRO Version:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1kCQr6GcV-Wp7vdkwBiCSOPAUVzZBHSLF

LE version:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Z2cEQOw0NTO6uaxYxLxpDSak88_spNF6

Let me know if you have any issues. Hope you all like it.

Side note - Sounds best with a subwoofer if you have one that you can hook up. Especially with the new tracks that have some good bass notes to them.

Link doesn't work?

Worked on both my phone and laptop.

Quoted from DugFreez:

After watching the video it made me think of a suggestion.
Give us a woman's voice that says "Shoot again" when you get the Dazzler shoot again animation. It makes no sense that she skates by...shows up with mic in hand and we get gruff Wolvie growling "Shoot Again!". I still shake my head wondering what they were thinking when making this game. I remember going through other SAM games for awhile and looking for a female "Shoot Again" and all I found was Chole on 24 and a female voice on TRON (which sounded to processed / computerized). Really, almost any female voice (that is supposed to sound like Dazzler) saying "shoot again" should be an improvement.

I could do that. Just need to find one that says it. If you have any places where I can find a sound clip let me know. I think there are 3 different clips loaded for variety, but I'm sure just one will be fine.

Quoted from luvthatapex2:

Excellent work so far! I wasn't able to hear the BEAST callouts clearly like the others. Maybe it was just the recording or my phone, but the others stood out more prominently.
+1 vote for DAZZLER replacement on the SHOOT AGAIN. That's the one callout that actually bothers me. You could grab a TRON ROM or 24 ROM and extract the sound byte with pinball browser (older version) and it would be easy to insert in your XMEN.

I'll try this out later today. I'm also looking at Text-to-Speech options as well.

The Beast call outs weren't the best quality. That's one of the voices that I'll have to go back in to boost. His voice is generally "soft" and has a deeper tone to it, so it won't stand out as prominently as something that is more high pitched.

Quoted from tslayer71:

Nice job! I'd be interested in a pro version. You should consider a color dmd for your LE - dots turned out good for this one...

Sounds good. I have a few games I want ColorDMD for. This will be the first when I can get the funds for them.

#25 5 years ago

Hope the people that have it are enjoying it. There's still some sound balancing to do, plus I want to change out Gambit and his music along with Iceman, (though I do like the original). I'll grab that Shoot Again clip, or maybe get a friend to do it for me.

#28 5 years ago
Quoted from artymech2131:

FatPanda ,I would love to try this out, can you send me the file? Thanks In advance!

PM sent

#29 5 years ago

Just a slight update, I think I've replaced all of the callouts and music that I wanted to. Shout out to acaciolo for letting me use his "shoot again" sound bite for the game. Once I've played it enough and get a really good feel of sound balance, I'll throw it out there for people that want to use it.

#31 5 years ago

Hey all. Thanks for all the requests for the sound package. I will be putting up a link for the finished version some time later this week. I want to make sure it all sounds good before I send out another revision. I'll update the initial first post when it's ready.

#35 5 years ago

I can work on a PRO version once the LE version is ready. It shouldn't be too bad to replace the sound files on it once I get the LE version finalized.

#38 5 years ago
Quoted from ryandimx:

Is the link above the updated one? I'm gonna give it a go

No it isnt. I'll update the first post when it's ready.

#40 5 years ago

Final versions of the sound package are linked in the original post. I did both the PRO and LE.

#42 5 years ago
Quoted from Shadrac:

Cool, thanks. I will buy for the second time an Xmen soon. Can you explain what changes you made?
Thanks

I changed the X-Men callouts to callouts from the 90s animated series (and some from video games) including Beast, Storm, Rogue, Cyclops, Phoenix and Gambit. Also changed out most of the X-Men mode music, and music for Brotherhood, Hellfire MB, and Sabertooth, Juggernaut, Omega Red modes.

#45 5 years ago
Quoted from Parzival:

Excellent! Newb question here, but I've never replaced a sound package before, can someone point me in the right direction for instructions?

You download the code and reinstall it as if you were updating the code.

Download the code (XXXXX.bin)
copy it to a USB flash drive (make sure it's the only file on the drive)
Game should be off
Switch dipswitch #8 to ON (top dipswitch, left position)
Insert flash drive (upper right hand corner on the board)
Turn on game
Using the menu buttons inside the coin door, select the code to be installed (you don't need to verify the image)

Once the code has been uploaded, turn off the machine, remove the flash drive, switch dipswitch #8 back to OFF (right position), then turn the game back on

It should? I'll PM you the links

EDIT: I just realized you the link that I PMd you are the same as the ones posted above lol

Maybe try a different computer or a different connection?

#51 5 years ago
Quoted from Shadrac:

If someone can do a video with the code installed it would be very nice

I can put one up later today.

#55 5 years ago
Quoted from tonedef131:

Rogue’s music especially caught me off guard.

In a good way or bad way?

#57 5 years ago
Quoted from tonedef131:

A good way for sure, very fitting.

Glad you enjoy it. I've been playing it a lot lately also (obviously). I tried to make the music fit the character, either by title, by melody/tempo etc. I also tried to edit the music to fit into the time allowances, but to add variances to the track too. There's a lot of cutting/pasting/editing of tracks, but the obvious goal was to make to blend in well where you couldn't tell it was edited.

Awesome job, xmen pro is one of our favs but hate the voice acting. This is awesome man! Great work!
Did you do any other pins?

Thanks for the feedback. I have not done any other games. I've thought about doing SM but just the music. My other Stern is TWD and I have the Cleland code on it.

Quoted from cleland:

fatpanda props to you big time for doing this.
I know what a challenge it is to take on a sound project like this.
I hope to be able to play an X-Men with your sound package one day. I know it needed help desperately with the audio.

Thanks @cleland! You're famous for your TWD mix so I know you know

with respect to your work and effort , it's great
for me the mcuzz version it a little bit more atmospheric in terms of the music themes choose - or at least I like the music there more ... but that's just my personal opinion and 2ct

Options are a good thing! Glad you found one that suits you.

Quoted from Whitenoise3000:

So excited I just found this. Can't wait to install it on my Magneto LE! It sits there kind of sat since it is next to Tron and has serious sound performance envy...

For me, it's brought new life to the machine. I hope it gets some extra play time with the new package. It's terribly underrated. If you have a sub, hook it up!

#72 5 years ago
Quoted from BC_Gambit:

Very cool of you to try to rescue this machine given its... unusual choices for voice work.

Thanks! I fondly remember watching the show when I was a kid, it premiered right before the first episode of Power Rangers. Watched it religiously on Saturday mornings over the years growing up, and the fact that the voices in that show pretty much dictated how the characters would sound from very iteration thereafter, it just needed to be done.

Now every time I play the game, I get to enjoy each character how I remembered growing up. And with a 3 yr old son, and introducing him to the XM universe that I grew up with, just makes it all the better. /sappylifestory lol

The game is continuously criticized for it's callouts (much like TWD red-neck guy). Hopefully with the redone sound package, it'll open the game up to people that couldn't get past the less than optimal voice work.

In the future, I'll try to get better source material to work with, as I used only what I could find on Youtube. I may have to find an official DVD or Bluray set and rip audio from those sources to plug into the package, but I think overall the quality turned out alright.

#74 5 years ago
Quoted from Whitenoise3000:

Have you considered using call outs from the many video game versions of the X-men? I'm betting there are plenty of options if you can get a hold of the sound files.
Also, I do have a sub hooked up to the game. Makes it thump

All of Phoenix's call outs are from MvC3 and some of Cyclops's callouts are from MvC2 (I believe). A couple of Gambit's are from another game that I can't remember, so yes I have

#77 5 years ago
Quoted from Pinzap:I'll volunteer to direct Halle Berry if we can get the kickstarter up high enough to actually pay all these people.
Speaking of funding, I would be willing to send you a little donation for your time that you spend putting this all together once I actually get my Magneto X-men that I am holding out for. Have a potential lead on a wolverine, but I prefer the magneto slightly more. But preferences aren't set in stone.

I do like the Magneto art package more, but Wolverine looks nice too. I dont think I would hold out if one came before the other.

I read the thread on SMVE callouts...I definitely wont be quitting my day job

Quoted from Whitenoise3000:

Have you considered hiring Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, and Ian McKellen for a custom sound package? Could be epic

The casting was pretty good on Patrick Stewart and Hugh Jackman. I dont think I would have gone with Ian McKellen for Magneto but he grew on me. Cant wait to see what Disney does with the franchise.

#81 5 years ago
Quoted from lmo:

I have a Wolverine LE and agree, would have preferred the Magneto. That said, Wolvie (especially the backglass) has really grown on me. Looks really good in person.
Just added the sound package and its fantastic. Absolutely awesome work!

Thanks! Really appreciate the posts. Glad you're all enjoying it!

#83 5 years ago
Quoted from The_Dude_Abides:

So cool thanks for doing this was needed on this title!! Love the pins gameplay and look of all models probably my favorite pin. Real weakness was sound IMO.
I know this will be redundant for most but I’ve been out of the hobby for a good while. Can someone please link a thread that explains how to change audio in game with this sound file?

You basically have to re-update the game with the modified code. It was as-if Stern had a new "code drop."

You download the code I have linked, and upload it to your game as if you were updating a new code.

Game off
In the back box:
Dipswitch 8 to the LEFT
Insert USB drive with only the game code on it (XXXXXX.bin file)
Turn on machine and follow prompts to update code
Turn off machine when update is complete
Dipswitch 8 back to the RIGHT
Remove USB drive
Turn machine back on

Hope that helps

#87 5 years ago
Quoted from porkcarrot:

It is pretty cool that you have replaced the voices, but have you considered a version that doesn't change the music (except for adding the animated series theme)? I plan to own X-Men again at some point, but given the music included in this I would rather have the original voices and sounds. I don't want to insult your musical taste, but the songs here seem even more out of place than the bad voice acting of the original game.

If there are those that want this, Pinball Browser is easy to pick up and use. Musical taste is personal preference and it's very much easy to export/import the tracks if it's something that you want.

Hey FatPanda. Just updated my magneto LE and even though I got an update failed error 8 it seemed to take. Between the Newton ball mod and your code package this game is freaking amazing now. Thanks for putting the time into it.

Just a little update. I tried to insert some Magneto voice clips into the game, but didn't turn out good results. The register of the voice actor on the TV show was too deep, and couldn't stand out from the music and sound effects of the game without the audio clipping. At this point, the stock Magneto callouts will have to suffice, which is a bit disappointing, but at least it's decent compared to the stock Beast and Storm callouts. I had some good callouts ripped too.

Maybe use some Ian McKellen call outs?

The VA in the original sound package tried to mimic Ian McKellen, and at that, he did a decent job. Plus some of tha callouts are pinball specific, so no reason to swap him out really.

Glad you are enjoying it! They're not all 80s/90s!

Cyclops - Somewhere I Belong - Linkin Park
Iceman - Remember the Name - Fort Minor
Phoenix - Shatter Me - Lindsey Sterling
Rogue - Layla - Eric Clapton
Wolverine - Last Resort - Papa Roach
Beast - Symphony 40 - Mozart
Gambit - Cochise - Audioslave

Brotherhood MB - Bat Country - Avenged Sevenfold
Hellfire Club MB - Some Epic song by Within Temptation - I can't remember and don't have that song saved
Sabertooth - I Stand Alone - Godsmack
Omega Red - Russian Roulette - 10 Years
Juggernaut - Got the Life - Korn
Shadow King - Mudshovel - Staind

I think that's all of them.

Quoted from sulli10:

Love the sound package. Occasionally, I get what sounds like static pops during some of the new speech. Did not happen before the down load. Any ideas?

This is the audio clipping from the sound clip that I was using. When I tried to normalized some audio clips, it distorted some parts of the sound wave, and you get that bit of popping. I tried to reduce it as much as I could, but then the sound clip would be super quiet. I'm sure there are ways to clean it up, but I'm not smart enough to know or do it.

#116 3 years ago
Quoted from J-Freeze:

Doubt it. Its the sound clip(audio file) itself not the speakers.

Correct. I would have to go back in and see if I could clean it up more. I dont have the sound clips anymore so I would have to source them again and edit them down. The ones I recall that did this were the Pheonix ones. It could be something I revisit at some point, but dont have any plans to.

#118 3 years ago
Quoted from Malenko:

Do you recall where the "free game" sound is? I need to replace the squashed rubber ducky sound with practically anything else.
I am loving your sound package , it is pretty much everything I wanted to do and more.

I can't say I know what you're talking about. Are you referring to the Stern "knocker" sound? I do not believe that is accessible via pinball browser.

#120 3 years ago
Quoted from Malenko:

I guess its the "knocker" sound. It plays when you get a free game via high score or match game. I turned off the match game just to avoid hearing that sound (game is on free play anyway, but I really like the match animation) but I set a GC score and heard it anyway

Yeah, I don't know if that is accessible via pinball browser. Likely not since people would have changed it long ago. You can always turn off the knocker sound, which I've done on other games, but still keep the match animation.

Fantastic! Got an le like 7 years ago thinking I need to replace this sound bites. Amazing and thank you for sharing, need to explore this a bit, install it and figure out if I can assist in call out updates. I have no idea how to make changes but from the video sounds are on pointe! Thank you!
If you have recommended reading on pinball browser would love to learn more. Are the files labeled in a way to determine what goes to what sound or do you have it noteated somewhere? FatPanda if I screw things up I suspect I can just flash the latest update again to bring the old sounds back?

It's been a while since I've played in Pinball Browser. I used Audacity for all of my sound editing. I stuck to the "Audio" tab and I just found groups of call-outs the old fashioned way by clicking on the sound bit and seeing (hearing) what it was. Any notes that I had on what which each on was are long gone now.

It'll be pretty hard to screw things up in your game if you upload something and it doesn't turn out, just reupload the source copy and you should be good to go. Have fun!

Wow, thanks FatPanda !!! This sound update makes X-men a game I enjoy playing now. Are there any other games you've done?! I'd update in a heartbeat!
The beast callouts and so many others were just awful and cringeworthy. Now, there's great music (Beast mode classical!? Cut my life into pieces?!) and so much better callouts. I haven't delved into it too far but I can assure you that already... this is monumental!
I'd never updated a sam game and it wasn't difficult at all. Gameroom-guys youtube video made it easy.

Thanks for the post and it never gets old reading posts like these.

I have not done any other games, so nothing else for you to update. Sorry about that So glad that you're enjoying it, and glad to see that people continue to discover it as they learn about this game. It's always been very underappreciated and has always flown under the radar and I'm glad that my sound package continues to make others enjoy the game more.

If you don't have a subwoofer for this game, I would highly recommend one. Enjoy!

Quoted from dr_nybble:

Are the Jean Grey callouts replaced? They sound like she has some kind of weird slurred voice. (I'm not familiar with the original sounds.)

Yes they are replaced, though they shouldn't be slurred. They are from one of the Marvel Vs Capcom games (I believe MvC3). There is a little bit of clipping on some of her clips, (where it might be a tad bit distorted) but I remember not being able to normalize it and still have them the same volume as the others.

#131 2 years ago
Quoted from d0n:

Is the callout gone where she says, I died but I came back better... or something like that? I've only played 2 games so far and will figure it out eventually but I'm sure you know now.

If it was a stock callout, it was replaced. Can't say I'm sure which one you are talking about though and I don't have my game anymore.

#133 2 years ago
Quoted from dr_nybble:

Ok I listened to “you’re about to deal with forces you can’t possibly comprehend” here :
Sounds fine, but on my X-Men it sounds like she has a speech impediment — sounds like “forshes”. How does it sound on other machines? Maybe my speakers are shot.

Some of her tracks were clipping and that was probably one that I couldn't or didn't know how to fix at the time.
