It was only a matter of time before I jumped in. There's something about the X-files pin, no, there are many things that I like about the X-Files pin! I think the art package is solid, it's certainly a step up from DE. I love the Sega Showcase cabinet. On the rare times I've been in there, it's nice just to swing it out. The Whitestar boards are solid performers and were used all the way to LOTR. Maybe I'm lucky in that I also have an unpopulated X-files playfield (Thank you LTG and GK!) and I get to see all the details close up. I enjoy the rule set and the call outs. The 2 orbits are fun to play and both are super fast. I like choosing between Scully and Mulder at the beginning, I just find that fun and I usually pick Scully. The cabinet shot is fun, and when the magnet is going, it does a great job of flinging the balls off target, or holding 1 or 2 of them on. It's very satisfying to have multi-ball going, have the cabinet shot blocked, and still make it. The ramps are tight, but manageable, there's some good shot selection.
It's not all rainbows and glittering ponies though. While I like the sounds that are in there, I wish they were better quality. There are times when the ball will hang on the lip between the file cabinet door and the playfield (I should be able to tweak that a bit). While they've made great use of Mulder's filing cabinet and moving through x-files episodes, I wish they would have done more with alien baby. I'm fortunate to have one signed by Rob Hurtado
I've done the Sega Stereo mod on mine, with a slight sound improvement. I think I need to put in better speakers and move my sub over from my Tron.
Like anything else, we're all attached to some more than others. I think I'm lucky to have a great playing X-Files. I've played a Theatre of Magic, (which I'd really love to own), I don't think I'd describe X-files as a poor man's TOM, but I do need more playing time on TOM. Also, the TOM I played had issues with the trunk, and wasn't playing to it's full potential. If you've played an X-files that has had issues, find a good one and give it a try.
I want to take mine to PAGG so others can enjoy it.
Feel free to ping me anytime with questions on it.
One last very honorable mention. Chas at Stern Support, thank you Chas for helping me through a magnet / transistor issue. X-Files was my first pin bought back in 2010 I think.... And I called Stern when my magnet didn't work and Chas helped me trouble shoot it. Nothing but great support from Stern.
