SDTM Gameplay: Willy Wonka

Thanks for this video Zach/SDTM!!!

SO NICE to see all the playfield features up close and in detail - looks great!

Tonight's less than super positive reveal response was the usual Pinside critical negativity exacerbated by Kaneda's over-the-top hype for the game. I have no doubt that this game will prove to be a winner once its full code is available and pinheads get a chance to play it.

For Willy Wonka fans especially - and there are a LOT of them - this will be a joy to play!

Congrats to Pat Lawlor, Joe Katz, and JJP for yet another fine game!!!

Quoted from zaphX:

I'll be streaming Wonka on and off this week at twitch.tv/nspinball.
I had a pretty great game with a neat mode:

Nice game!

Dammit man - now I'm wanting a Willy Wonka again!

Back on the wishlist.

Quoted from Adipocere:

IMO, the LE upgrades are not worth the extra 2 grand (or more). You can (and should) add a shaker motor for a couple hundred. The virtual ball lock actually makes for a better flow, and with the money you save you could buy another machine (or at least a good chuck of a new one). The blue powder coat is nice but not 2 grand more nice. No offense to LE owners, it just wasn't justified to me.

Wow -so glad I went for a CE instead of an LE now. Thanks!

Quoted from psexton:

I am just saying it feels "light" not that it actually is light. Hard to explain but it is feels like the walls are thin or something when compared to Dialed On, Hobbit, WOZ. Like it is thin walled and "cheaply made" when compared to those three. Was hoping there was a fix like weighing it down with weights or changing out the flipper buttons, something to make to "feel" more premium "in the hands".

Interesting.

Wonka has a different feel for me than WoZ, Hobbit, and Pirates, but not in a negative (light/cheap) way at all. I attribute the main difference to it being a standard body game.

Wonka's shots and feel are so distinctively smooth, that I'm now interested in getting a Dialed In as well - a game that I've poo poo'd for years due to its theme.

Quoted from Pin1234:

Sure this question has been asked before but I can’t find the answer. I am running into issues with the ball getting stuck after it enters the most secret machine hole. The ball gets stuck and does not come back up to the play field. I changed the coil setting for the VUK gobstopper to 24 but no luck. Any suggestion
[quoted image]

What do you mean by "stuck" specifically? Does the ball actually reach the VUK or is it "stuck" in the subway? If the latter, than you probably have some sort of obstruction like a loose part/piece that fell into the subway.

If it reaches the VUK, do you hear the VUK trying to kick it upwards? If so and increasing the power isn't working, you likely have a physical obstruction issue again. Operate the coil (via test) with the ball in the VUK and observe what it's doing/hitting.

Quoted from Pin1234:

Thanks for the help. The issue seems to be right at the VUK entrance. I can see and hear the ball trying to enter the VUK but it does not have enough power to push the ball into the VUK. Perhaps I increased the power to the wrong part?

The green coil in your second pic (where you're saying the problem is) is for the Gobstopper Lockup Kicker (coil#59). The VUK's coil (coil #1) is the yellow one.

It's hard to see exactly from your pic, but it looks like the switch arm (the ball sits on) that activates the green coil is bent or misaligned (and perhaps obstructing the ball from being kicked out properly). Also examine the kicker mech to see if anything is loose or misaligned that may be causing the coil's plunger to be weaker than it should be, and check the subway area to see if anything is obstructing the ball once the kicker's plunger hits it. Go to the coil test menu and operate/observe coil #59 (by hitting start button once selected).

Here's the switch on my game:

Quoted from RDReynolds:

Put spotlights on my machine...but stupid question, where do you wire them to? I found some gi lights that should work but they are of course not soldered but connectors. So curious to see how you did yours. Many thanks!

I typically connect lighting mods on all my JJP games into the spotlights' wiring. Just remember that JJP operates lighting on a 12v system!

#9009 2 years ago
Quoted from Lermods:

Gi lighting and the spotlights are 5v on wonka. Been a while since I’ve checked that, but pretty sure it is.

Interesting. Oh well ... so much for consistency if that's the case.
