Hi Kevin can you comment on noticible changes in 1.14 code?

Skipnatty would be the one to answer that — he did the stream for us last night.

Replied via DM but I'll include that here too for others that are curious.

The two big things were we testing last night were changes to the upper left flipper magnet and its durability...specifically in longer games and after being played for longer periods, the magnet would become overheated and shut itself down for safety purposes. So I was testing the durability of that magnet throughout the night and whether or not it was missing or not activating when it should.

Second, the timing of the release of the Wonkavator locks was changed in the LE/CE, so we were watching that...those were the big things that I was looking for.

Will they be adding any modes or anything to the game or it is complete as it stands?

I got one of those from Vegas and hung it from the ceiling grid above the pin and approximately over the apron so that there wouldn't be any glare.

Care to share a photo of this? Would like to see it. I plan on possibly using it as a pin topper, but may change based on how yours looks

It went well, the upper Wonkavator release timing was really well coordinated and the upper left flipper magnet was still working at the end of the night, 3+ hours later.

I had a decent final ball bonus after finally collecting a 3rd golden ticket and being showered in Wonka Bars and Candy Jar candy.

Here's a couple of pics. Once I finalize getting a topper and if I don't want to put this above the topper because of clearance or too much glare, then I will notch the ceiling tile for it to set flat.

Okay that looks really nice! Nice find.

Do you have any information on where someone else could purchase one?

Once the Vegas and Missouri casinos swap out their software to a different theme on their slot machine (new software, same machine), sometimes they need or want to liquidate the topper and surround glitz and lights. I found all of mine on eBay so far. From Vegas I got two of the Wonka toppers (one just stays one color), a WOZ slot topper that goes over 2 bluebird slot machines, and 2 different WOZ surrounds that go over and around a Bluebird slot machine (a horseshoe shape that fits over the top - might put those around some video screens of pinball ads or how it's made videos). From a Missouri casino I got an Iron Man topper that goes over two bluebird slot machines that has some animation to the lights. From what I heard (might not be true as I never verified it), shortly after I got the Iron Man one, Marvel withdrew all of the theme licenses from the casinos and ordered all of the Marvel toppers and surrounds be destroyed and not sold. If that's true, I got something pretty rare with that one.

Anyway … short answer is to just keep an eye out on Ebay. They show up there every now and then. Since SeatManDan got 1 and I got 2, they sold off at least 3 of them so far.

* Fizzy Lifting Drink Room
* Golden Egg Room
* 2x scoring
* 3x scoring
* 4x scoring
* 5x scoring
* Slugworth MB
* 2x Wonka Bars
* Super Spinner
* Collect Augustus
* Collect Mike
* Collect Violet
* Wonkatania Mania
* Wonka Wash Frenzy
* Wonka Store Room
* Oompa Loompa Hurry Up
* World Record Gum Chewing
* Dots Dots Dots
* The Candy Man
* Unlimited Kickback
* Wonka Bar Craze
* Gobstopper MB
* Kid MB
* Wonkavator MB
* Oompa Loompa Odyssey
* Wonka's Office
* Most Secret Machine
* Pure Imagination

[Which you can stack 13 of those at once, BTW.]

Plus around a dozen other awards from small points to light extra ball to giant wizard mode instant bonus. And tons of secret stuff no one seems to have discovered yet.

What the hell else do you want us to put in this game??

Well stated. My wife and I are putting hours into this thing, daily. Trying like hell to get better!
It will keep us busy for ages. We have ~2400 plays and we’re slowly discovering more and more nuance.

The game is very well done and we salute the entire team for their hard work!

Looking forward to my CE.

All cool stuff but just feels like it is missing something could use a little more although I do enjoy the game, but you can always add more to make it even better;

I've looked at some of your stream (hope you Dont mind). Great watch.
You seem more glad playing wonka then jp, or is it just How it looks to me?

#2325 4 years ago

I think the game is loaded, but it doesn't feel as immersive as the Hobbit or potc. I can't quite put my finger on it, maybe a little more integration between the screen and the playfield. Maybe a little more flash in the playfield lighting or some better sound cues/integration. There's no equivalent of killing smaug or sinking the ship or even hitting big bang, that I can see. Collecting a Wonka ticket doesn't compare I don't think. Maybe have the wonkavision provide more cues like in hobbit.

Love the game and very happy with it, I'll never see the entire game, but i do like being drawn in.

The modes aren't really engaging/memorable. You would think the egg mode would be but I find it hard to tell what shot is a good egg or a bad egg. Maybe the lights flash too much or sometimes it seems the good egg turns to a bad egg shot mid mode. The other modes are less engaging and less intergrated with the ball path/movement. Maybe more voices from the movie clips while playing a mode would help or more calls out on what to shoot. Collecting a golden ticket seems too random and not a skilled event like killing smaug or even hitting the big bang target, so therefore it is way less exciting. All the awards and scoring mutilpiers are good, but not as memorable as having great engaging modes where your shot on the playfield relives a scene in the movie. Shooting ramps to have Charlie burp was a good attempt but something is missing, like callouts or voices, etc. to really pull you in and make it clear you are saving Charlie from certain death from the fan.

Thanks for watching! I’m enjoying them both. Lately my wife has been hitting Wonka really hard, which has increased the competition and enthusiasm between us. JP is terrific as well! I think I’ve only streamed that one twice so far, but I’ve got around 500 plays against it. I’ve dialed in the shots and they feel AMAZING. I have a better rules understanding also.

I am very fortunate to enjoy the two hottest games in pinball right now.

I feel very fortunate! And she is a damn good player too, she currently holds our Wonka GC of 4.3M defeating my 2.6.

We are novice players but having fun trying and practicing daily like athletes.

Quoted from Lermods:

For me, getting the Wonkavator multiball from having no balls previously locked from a prior game is pretty big.

Killing Smaug > Killing Witch > Wonkavator MB > Sinking Ship > Big Bang

Wonka is great and gets better as you get more playing time (and get better) to see some of the other levels/things that Keith listed. The game is growing on my wife & I and is a lot of fun, sometimes frustrating. It's great the way it is with the modes. It would be hard for any game to beat the theme immersion the code brings in Hobbit. That's not a put-down to Wonka though as all of the JJP games have great depth in code and are extremely entertaining and fun to play. That's why my wife & I own all of them and we aren't planning on selling any of them for a long time.

Final polishing in code is always appreciated. Humor and taunting call outs are always a popular positive. Wonka is good - no complaints with the latest code here (after the magnet overheating compensating code is finished being tested and released). Thanks to Joe, Keith and the JJP software team for another good one.

Edit: I did find one bug that if you hit the captive ball (I think that's what triggered this) and it awards you Wonkatania, but the ball drains directly after hitting the captive ball, the code for Wonkatania keeps going even through the bonus screen for a little bit and the sound files overlap and conflict with each other. Nothing big, but in case Joe doesn't know about that one.

I love the game but the callout actor you used is really bad. He sounds like he is dying most of the time. One of the jackpot callouts in particular sounds like the guy's last dying breath. His laid back voice style really dampens the excitement level. Replace him with someone that has excitement in their voice like one of the kids. I suspect it would be tough to get a Gene Wilder impersonator but that would be better too.

Agree with the others but everything seems to happen randomly. It is tough for the casual player to know what to hit other than "the TV" (which seems like the only shot the game calls you out to shoot). Maybe this is just learning the rules of the game...

I have to admit, that one Jackpot call sounds like he just accidentally swallowed his Werther’s Original and it went down the wrong pipe.

There are alot more shot callouts... but I don't think they are the most descript at times.. or often confusing. It will say 'camera ramp' or 'factory'.. or 'shoot for the gobstopper'. I've found naming of the shots contradictory too... is the orbit under the TV the right orbit.. or is it the orbit on the side, people sometimes call the side orbit?

I do find myself needing to look at the wonkavision monitor to find what I'm supposed to be doing for the blue modes. The progression of shots isn't always the most intuitive and it can be difficult to pickout the arrow lighting when lots of stuff is going on.

Clearer naming is a problem in the community around this game for sure.

I just sold me LE and the buyer asked for the Letter of Authenticity. My LE only came with an envelope attached to the box that had the LE plaque in it. Did anyone else receive a signed paper certificate like the previous games or are they not doing that anymore? I assume they’d send me it if it was omitted.

Yes, the right orbit is under the Wonka-Vision, to the left of the TV shot.

We decided to watch the movie tonight, and we’ve been playing for hours since. Watching the movie really gave an even greater appreciation for the way the assets were used. My only complaint is my lack of skill, as we STILL haven’t gotten more than one golden ticket. We’re working on it and practicing like crazy, but I need a pinball coach.

I feel bad for the people out on this game over clearcoatgate or audioclipgate.
You are missing a lot of fun.

#2348 4 years ago

They definitely did what they could to minimize usage of a truly awful movie, and I commend them for that. Creepy, ugly and disturbing come to mind. A terrible adaptation of a wonderful book. Unfortunately when the game starts playing is it raining is it pouring I feel the need to grab a rusty toothpick and gouge my eardrums out. But other than that it's usually bearable.

That being said, great layout, great shots, amazing sound fx, nice ruleset make up for it. But holy hell, when will the revisionist nostalgia-fest stop.

Are you even an American?
Do you still have that rusty toothpick handy?

Considering the movie is just about as German as it gets (soulless, mechanical, boring). And based on a book by a British author, not sure why this matters.

I'm sorry I don't like Wonka as a child serial killer/slave owner. Really insulting to Dahl imo.
