You should be able to use a 3mm diode LED. May just have to file down that lip. Radioshack use to carry a bunch of these but they seem to never have anything anymore. But give it a try. I think 3mm may be the smallest. But you will need a super bright, otherwise I would assume it won't be bright enough.
