    Not sure this helps but you should also be able to use the Texas Instruments TL16C450N.
    Equally obsolete but maybe easier to find?
    Real difficult to locate these in a DIP package.

    Jameco (if you trust them...) has the TL16C550CN. Same part but capable of faster speed.
