NGG is by far more fun and superior game. WPT I think is ones of Sterns worst. I would much rather have the game I think called High Roller Casino by Stern than WPT.

Totally disagree.

my 2 cents: NGG is a more appealing game. Art package is fantastic, some really satisfying shots and easy to understand rules.

WPT has a typical Keefer deep ruleset that I feel gives the game a lot of last-ability. There are TONS of drop targets if thats your thing, but the art is notoriously bleh.

Edge goes to NGG, but WPT is an under-rated game for sure.

#5 11 years ago

I have both. I consider both "keepers." My WPT has a custom translite and I have the engineering sample (whitewood), so I don't have the art to contend with. WPT and WoF are two of Stern's BEST games with BAD themes. NGG is an all-around winner that would unfortunately be one of the first 5 WPC games to deserve a code update. NGG is what Caddyshack would be had Williams been able to secure the license.

NGG is one great Pin.

I totally agree. I think those who think WPT is one of the worst Sterns, have not spent enough time with the game. Bad art, bad theme, and it lacks the "Wow" factor that some Sterns have. However, I think it is one of the better players out there and has a great rule set. NGG is a great game also, but considering the price difference of the two machines, I would go with WPT for sure

I dislike WPT - NGG huge fan.

Ngg all day I would rather have Mario bros than wpt

OMG - you are so harsh...

WPT is not so bad (I love drop targets and upper playfields!). Not that I love it, but it is so underated that one can get it for a low price. Forget the art.
NGG is OK but I am not in love. Can't really say why. In any case, should be easier to sell. Nice humour. Original bonus calculation.

Theme: no interest in golf, poker or gofers (!) so that's a tie...

#14 11 years ago

Evidently we don't have an people that like rulesets weighing in on this thread, lol. I've own(ed) both, from a rules standpoint WPT is like 10x the game NGG is. Yes, it has bad artwork, and yes it has a bad theme, but from a challenge/strategy standpoint it is a way better game. I think a lot of people played WPT when it first came out and had several issues but the final software by Keith is outstanding in my opinion.

NGG is an ok game but it gets old pretty quickly. The gophers actually aren't even that funny, they try to be but they just aren't. It does have the awesome hole in one shot though.

If you're just going to have it for a few months, the games would probably be even. Any longer than that, and WPT is going to be the much more entertaining game to own.

People will eventually figure out that WPT is a hidden gem. $2k for Steve R and Keith J game? It just goes to prove though, that in pinball pricing the most important thing is manufacturer, and the second is theme...and if you have neither of those, you're worthless, lol.

#15 11 years ago

NGG. Now go pound some sand.

#16 11 years ago

#17 11 years ago

WPT is an awesome game. Lose the translite, turn up the volume, get better flow by disabling a post / gate and you've got a Steve Ritchie + Keith Johnson super-game.

Good golly, with all the debating we do about prices, WPT can be had around $2000 for HUO in great shape so you'd think more people would give it a chance.

You need to get one in your home and learn the rules and shots to better appreciate it.

#18 11 years ago

Some people just like to enjoy a good game of Pinball and not have to be a Pinball wizard to complete it. Most of the B/W Pins have decent rules for their time and with my work schedule and the fact my guess prefer a game they can walk up to and figure out pretty quickly is one of the reasons these A titles have gone up so much.

#19 11 years ago

Wpt can also be a classier game. I've never owned any other pins though so I'm biased.

#21 11 years ago

NGG by a LONG shot... literally.

#22 11 years ago

Neither

WPT may be a keeper for me. I'm not sure.

I'm pretty sure NGG gets old and would not stay very long.

I'm still thinking Congo is a nice in between as if WPT does not stay in my collection I'll trade it to ya

#23 11 years ago

WPT is a good example of a deep game, but not necessarily a fun game.

Sure, advancing to each Hold Em tournament gets tougher each time, but it just feels repetitive. The 7 card hands will get made by accident if you just keep a ball in play. Eventually the targets you need will get hit. It is cool how you can build a pot and collect it when a multiplier is running. That strategic aspect is quite good.

It's a good game for the price, but I think it's fairly rated.

NGG is not as deep, but it is more fun to play. The humor is not as funny as it could've been, but it doesn't hurt the game. I really think they missed an opportunity not mentioning hitting a birdie along with a squirel. The hole in one shot is unique, and it's easy to understand yet still be fun.

I've had both games and I like NGG a little better overall.

#25 11 years ago

Two very different games. I personally like WPT better by a long shot. But, you'd need to play each as they are so different.

#26 11 years ago

WPT. Deep rule set and lots of drop targets.

The call outs and the music on NGG kind of annoy me.

#27 11 years ago

my vote is for those no good gophers !

#28 11 years ago

So, WPT was my first "new" game. Before that, I mainly bought Game Plan games (Andromeda & SharpShooter) and I also bought a few other games like Raven, Williams First Soccer Pinball, etc.

When I got WPT I was really psyched but then the fun wore off. I guess I started playing other pinball games like Lord of the Rings and Spider-man and didn't know what I was missing.

WPT is not a horrible game. However, it's just "meh" when you play it. I never got that "I have to play this game again" feeling. If anything, I felt obligated to play it since it was my first very new pinball that had only one prior owner.

Anyway, go with NGG. You won't regret it.

#29 11 years ago

OK, you know my answer already but here are some reasons. First, NGG is a really good game, fun for casual players, nice interesting pf layout, a decent level of strategy, cool pop ramp shot, etc. A good, fun game that clearly has an established fan base. Can't go wrong with it imo.

Now, WPT is the "ugly duckling" of the recent Stern games, for artwork and theme that may not appeal to many. BUT: WPT is a keeper, a solid game with great flow and the best integrated rules/layout of any pin ever, imo. The main shots are tough, being well up in the back corners of the pf. The mini-pf is actually fun and tough to play well, with a few things to go for (or avoid on specific shots). That's one of the killer features of WPT: the strategy for each shot is incredible, and you're always trying to hit certain shots while avoiding others. Often there's 2 ways to do something, but each one has one or more other effects that you may want or want to avoid.

Everything in WPT is about risk/reward. Sure, you will eventually hit drops and ramps and make progress (good for the casual player), but the strategic possibilities are killer. And yes, some of the decisions are based on how good your holdem hand is or odds of improving to a good hand. Build the pot? Draw the turn card to see if you make that draw or improve your hand? Use that precious 3x shot or save it? Avoid starting ace-in-the-hole MB until you can stack it? (many people just start it right away!). Which Poker Corner mode to start? Wait for a stack with a MB or get it going now?

I could go on, but the point is, when you *really* get to know WPT, the subtle strategies are incredible and you really have to think on the fly--like setting up a high-scoring 3x shot that has to be made on the fly before it times out. Plus it has good wizard modes (for getting all 9 drop target hands, defeating all 6 cities, playing all 6 Poker Corner modes...) and a super-duper almost-impossible Keefer Invitational ultra-wizard mode!

WPT has very satisfying shots and flow (Ritchie), killer rules (Keefer), and awesome sound track (Granner). Yeah, the art sucks, but the rest of it makes for a killer pin that is 100% a keeper. It gets my vote for best Stern game of the past decade, even though LOTR and SM are up there. At around $2k these days, it is the best bang for the buck in modern pinball, bar none.

Not to mention the maintenance on wpt isn't difficult either.

#31 11 years ago

NGG got old for me after a year or so - especially the speech. It also has some unforgivable software bugs (e.g. plunge for jackpots). WPT is a much better game for the money.

Quoted from EvanBingham:

Try fixing the drop downs from not coming up with 1/8 washers. Not easy.

#33 11 years ago

I didn't have enough time on a WPT to be fair to it. NGG is a fun game and is great if you have kids. Very family friendly.

#34 11 years ago

My wife loves NGG and it will never leave. Only a few games on WPT so no thoughts on it.

#35 11 years ago

WPT has a lot to do but was just not fun and i love poker. My neighbor had it and it was sold in a month. I had NGG and the hole in one shot was great but the rest got old in a few months. The game is easy to finish 9 holes and call outs are weak. I vote for none of the above long term and NGG very short term.

+1 In a nut shell.

#39 11 years ago

Not even close, NGG is a underrated classic, held back only by it's buggy code, something I really hope will get fixed someday. Just a truly fun game to play!!

WPT, best I can say is Meh.

#40 11 years ago

I have had months with both of these machines. NGG is like a fishtales type of experience. Fast quick and frustrating when things aren't going your way. WPT is a target shooting game with a slower pace. Deeper rules and imho has more lasting power. I think your decision is do you want a fast quick game that leaves you wanted more? Or do you want a deeper game that you figure out ways to score points with low risk over time. It's a personal decision. Also experience on maintenance with Stern or Williams would influence my decision. I am comfortable working on sterns and much less with Williams. GL either way they're both great games.

#41 11 years ago

I would take the gophers...cause I know the poker would get old,,,

#42 11 years ago

NGG!

#43 11 years ago

i know i am in the minority but i have to say WPT would be my choice if i had to pick between the two...

the art package on WPT is worse then NGG for sure but i think game play and rules on WPT is better.

as far as re-sale down the road you probably would do better if you bought the NGG since most players prefer that table ..but if you are looking for a long term keeper i think WPT would be the better choice.

Definitely WPT for me. I like NGG, but I have seen everything the game has to offer. With WPT, I have barely scratched the surface. I like a difficult, shooter's game and there is so much going on in WPT when you finally learn it.
