Working on a basket case Judge Dredd for a buddy. To get to the point, I had it playing perfectly last night,. I was ready to move on to the clean up phase.

Today, I have it sitting in attract mode, making my LED list and the game dies. It goes dark, no sound, no lights, no DMD. So I open the backbox and the 5v LED is out (LED4). Also LED2 and LED3 are out.

I've already worked on this board. Hers what I've done: I'm pretty good with board repair.

1) Replaced all the capacitors and added "stitches" to the 5 large caps.
2) Bridges were replaced, I verified they have no shorts or open legs.
3) Removed and metered all fuses. They are all good.
4) Reflowed solder on every header pin
5) Reflowed solder on all fuse clips and the 5v regulator.

6) Dropped in a known good driver board, the game comes to life and plays normally.

I've read over Pinwiki. Not sure where to go from here. Is it possible the 5v regulator LM323 just crapped out? Something in the 5v circuit is bad.

Thanks.

That would be extremely rare. If your other work is good. May as well replace it. Now you are at eliminating things.

You want to know if there is about 11V across capacitor C5.
That is best done with board out of the machine on isolated place and only J101 plugged in and measured on solder side.

I'm getting 0.36v across C5.

Then it likely the bridge rectifier BR2 missing connection with a trace. Check solder also on component side of the PCB

Ok. I'll check that and report back. That bridge is a prior repair by someone else. Seemed ok, but you never know.

I recently repaired a board for someone that had BR2 replaced by someone else. The through hole was pulled. In fact the trace to the zero cross circuit was lifted from the front side of the board.

<rant>
I will never understand why people just don't cut the bridge rectifier at the legs to remove the entire body and then remove the legs individually. There is pretty much ZERO risk of through hole damage this way.

BR2 and BR1 were mounted very close to the board so i replaced them and set them higher.
Still getting 0.36v across C5.

Question: does the + terminal of BR2 go to the + lug of C5? Looks like it, but I have no continuity.

<duh moment> for me. I checked on the known good board and yes they do. I have a problem there.

#11 2 years ago

Yes, on top side of the PCB is a trace from BR2 (+) to C5 (+)

Take a good look at j101. That is where the 5v enters. I can see from the pic that it is original. Good chance those header pins are in need of replacement, as well as the male headwr pins.

Several of these bridge holes are ripped out as well. I mounted the new ones high enough to solder to the top side easily.
I was ranting myself...lol

5v is back! The frickin trace was split under the C5 capacitor near the through hole. Looked a little burned like it was arcing. Would explain why the game went dead immediately.

Thank you zaza for talking me through this and everyone else who contributed!
