    For a project I'm doing I need to hook up to the start button on the switch matrix. From what I can see the start button is 'always' on Column 1 / Row 3

    Is it a safe bet that this is true of ALL WPC era machines? Anyone know different?

    I can see some (maybe all) Sys 11 games have the start button at the same position, so I expect its 'just history' that has kept this position in the switch matrix static?

    I think that's pretty standard, but can't guarantee all WPC games are that way. Unless someone knows better you'll have to look through the switch matrix diagram for each WPC game (ipdb.org).
