I have just recently obtained my Road Show. I've been in the process of fixing minor issues like replacing bulbs, replacing sockets, and such. After I replaced a pop-bumper light socket, I fired up a game and realized that an entire column (column 3) is out. These switches are mostly on the right side of the game.

I can diagnose and fix small things, but I have no clue where to start on a matter like this. I have a multimeter, but am not really sure what to check. Any help and advice on where to begin and how to fix would be greatly appreciated.

If U20 on your CPU is socketed, I'd start by replacing it.

Thank you Lloyd. It is socketed, and I've placed an order for a replacement (ordered a few just in case).

And also, thank you for the confidence builder in thinking that I know what a U20 is. I literally had to get my manual and turn it sideways so the board in the book looked exactly like the one in the machine. I was thrown for a loop due to the fact that the battery holder wasn't shown in the book. Anyway, I'm learning.

Good for you.

There is a spot or indent on the chip. Look where it is on the old one and silk screened on the board. Get the new chip in facing the same direction.

Also check the diodes and wires on those switches . Sometimes they get a crack and break . Just go and give a slight tug . Game has a ton of vibration .

Before you replace that chip look for what might have caused it to go bad, so you don't ruin another one. You said "after you replaced a pop bumper light socket" you discovered the problem. I'm wondering if you might have created a short in the wiring for that column during the lamp socket replacement. Look over that column wiring carefully.

Uh, were you changing bulbs with the game on?

PinballManiac40 - for just the straight bulb replacements, yes I believe the game was on. For the sockets, it was off.

LTG Is there a way to test to see if the fault is in the U20 without popping a new one in and possibly frying it too?

None that I know of.

Someone with logic probe experience may know.

Yours is socketed, you likely did it messing with changing bulbs, U20 is cheap. I'd stick a new one in.

Thanks Lloyd. I bulk ordered some. Cheaper!

Thanks for the advice LTG - the U20 chip fixed it!
