I had a empty cabinet shipped on a pallet via fastenal from new mexico to minnesota for $125. I assume it would be very similar in price from California to minnesota.

Will the flat pack be cheaper the the full assembled cabinet price?

    #52 5 years ago

$125 is a great price, I contacted them last month and they said they don't deliver a pinball cabinet. I tried again and just said it was a plywood box and they still would not take the risk? Im going to stop by there in a day or 2 and speak to someone face to face to try to get it resolved....
In the meantime the first proto flat pack is shipping today, I will get a flat pack shipping price and compare it to fastenals shipping of an entire cab (if I can get them to quote it) and then post final prices and shipping costs.
I'm not cutting any more pieces currently until I get some feedback on the kit shipping this week, and what is already in users hands...
Here is the first flat pack cab for a T2...

Wow I wish I wax closer I would just buy a cabinet from you for my creature build

    #56 5 years ago

That may have just broken the last concern I had.. do you think you could paint and decal
A flat pack as well, or is that too many steps?

    #57 5 years ago

IKEA ain’t got nothin on this...bravo

    #58 5 years ago

Well I got quotes on flat pack shipping today...95 lbs box from So Cal to Texas runs $120...ouch...
that's from fed ex or UPS (usps wont touch anything over 70 lbs)
anybody got any tips for cheaper shipping... otherwise it just makes more sense to ship completed cabs on pallets for $125 with Fastenal

that wouldn't work as the cab needs to be glued and nailed/stapled together along with filling and sanding, thus ruining the decals

    #59 5 years ago

May sound crazy, talk to Michelle with NAVL?
Might be able to get a deal on these frequent flat packs that can have flexible delivery times?
    Just a thought.

I think you have to separate the shipment into 3 parcels, otherwise its too heavy.
You can ship it as shelving.
Then you can get better prices, and regular shippers will handle it.

    Otherwise:

I shipped an engine block on a pallet UPS LTL freight for $95, took forever.

Mdf is heavy, so what? and like plywood will be damaged forever if soaked in water, but when would that happen? Soaking in water? Mdf will not warp like plywood from humidity. There's a reason pinball machine are made of mdf instead.of plywood. Plywood looks nice, but again, there's a reason they don't make pinball machines with it. Its not cost either.

The DIY flat pack is dead...F%@# UPS...

I shipped a flat pack cabinet to a pinsider who was kind enough to give it a try and give me some feedback. The box (95lbs) arrived with a crushed corner and damage to both side pieces of the lower cabinet and also the MDF bottom panel...my fault, really, I did not do a proper job in protecting the mitered edges and damage came when the box was dropped...OK, lets try again, I cut the replacement pieces and prep them for shipping (60lbs). But this time I use a combo of shrink wrap, foam, steel on the edges, more foam, more shrink wrap etc making a nice cocoon...this time they jack it up worse than the first set...
    Im done....

Love your carpentry skills , those cabinets are fantastic keep up the great work. Hope you sort out the flat pack option.

    #64 5 years ago

Damn shippers! That sucks, it was such a great concept.
How much does the empty cabinet weigh?
Perhaps the pre-built model will be best?
Shipping these on pallets is something i see a deal with weekly. Perhaps a dedicated shipper might be way to go. Yes, shipping wont be cheap, but if your customers are willing to pay in upwards of 700-800 for New cabinet, they will be willing to pay 300 shipping.
I hate to see this die.
    Your to good and talented.

I feel your pain with UPS. I've been fighting them for FOUR months over a playfield they lost (that was cardboarded and in a Kruzman wooden crate) that I insured for $700 and I've gotten nothing but lies, excuses and the usual run around all this time. I'll never ship anything more with UPS, especially when you read there policies on there website and it says they can decide how much or how little to pay you...that is if they pay you at all.
    UGH!!!

Yes, this will be the direction I am going from here on out.
Im taking a little break from this, I have invested so much time, money and effort into making the flat pack work that I am a bit burned out.
Im going to enjoy this holiday week, then next week I will start assembling completed cabs to palette ship.

Best of luck. Many years ago I ordered a 32” monitor for a Mame cabinet build. It arrived in about 15,000 pieces and when I went to file my claim, they claimed the insurance form “wasn’t filled out correctly”, despite the fact that they accepted shipment and I had paid for the insurance. I gave up after a month or so. UPS is the absolute worst. I was out $600. In retrospect I should’ve tried harder but I was young and didn’t know better.

Try FedEx. Every time I have a large package delivered by UPS, it looks like it was roughly handled. All my large fedex packages, on the other hand, arrive safe & sound. I avoid using UPS if I can help it.

So its time to revisit this thread, after having an electrician come out to add a few circuits in my new shop I find out that the supply wire and panel are not robust enough for my needs. A complete rewire is what its going to take to get it up to snuff. I trenched and ran 2" conduit and a water supply line from the house to the shop...

    20180721_102858 (resized).jpg20180721_102858 (resized).jpg20180804_121351 (resized).jpg20180804_121351 (resized).jpg20180805_115020 (resized).jpg20180805_115020 (resized).jpg
And also began to frame out a seperate room in the shop for disassembly/reassembly of games and benchwork repairs. This will have a garage door installed to seperate from the rest of the shop, keeping out sawdust etc....

Although the flat pack is what people want, its just not going to happen. But the WPCs are coming along nicely... I pulled the pre cut parts from the rack and quickly put together a head for TOM...
    20180816_202501 (resized).jpg20180816_202501 (resized).jpg20180816_202537 (resized).jpg20180816_202537 (resized).jpg
I also spent an incredible amount of time building a system 9 cab for a friends Sorcerer, I think this is the last non-WPC cab I am going to build for awhile as I have quite a few WPCs to complete and they dont take nearly as much time...the base game was termite eaten to the point that I didnt think it would even stay together while I used it as a template...

From reading his previous threads.... NO.

I think to make shipping feasible we should organize a group buy and have him ship via sea container then we all meet in one central place and pick up our cabinets. It'll be dirt cheap that way and less risk of damage. Thoughts?

    #75 5 years ago

Maybe a group buy by region? When enough have purchased he can ship? Make sense?

I've been able to get the OK from fastenal to ship, but he wasn't able to get the OK to set up shipments on his end. So hypothetically its possible. We haven't tried out the shipment yet.

    #77 5 years ago

I do think shipping via fastenal will be possible.
I made an error in announcing these for sale before I was properly prepared to build them in numbers... now I have quite a bit of local interest that has been keeping me busy so shipping is probably something that I wont be doing for awhile

I think I will change the title of this thread as it is a bit misleading right now, when things ramp up then I may change it back.

However if there is anyone in the southwest who wants to pick on up we can get that done

    #78 5 years ago

Well because this started as a for sale ad It wont let me change the thread title or first post..perhaps the best would be to close this one and start another one that more accurately reflects what I can offer at this time...

Frankly I was a bit too ambitious at the beginning of this thread...perhaps a new one that more accurately reflects what I can provide will avoid confusion.
