WPC / CFTBL Sound Board Issue

I have a strange issue with my newly acquired CFTBL. When a game ends, it plays the normal game over tune for 30 seconds or so at the expected volume. But when the song is supposed to stop, it doesn’t. Instead the song continues to play, albeit at very low volume. Almost a faint whisper, but it’s still audible.

I went into the sound diagnostics and played / stopped a few other sounds and clearly they stop as expected. Odd though, there’s no way to play the game over music within diagnostics.

Anyone seen anything like this before? It’s certainly a first for me....

Thanks,
James

What happens if you hit start (with no credits on the game)? Does the background music return to full volume, as well as the 'Insert Coin' sound effect?

If I hit the start button with no credits, the “insert coin” sound effect is trigger at the proper volume level. The “game end” music volume does not increase when they “insert coin” sound is triggered, I suppose it’s muffled out by the insert coin sounds.

Once the insert coin sound ends, the game over music is still present, still at a very low volume level.

I haven’t studied the WPC sound / CPU inter-workings as I’ve simply never had a need. Odd that only one sound would have this problem. I suppose it’s time to pull the sound board and see if there are hacks.

Do other people hear this sound too?

If you haven't already, reseat all four connectors on the ribbon cable attached to the sound board.

Done. Same result.

I wish I knew the theory of how the sound board interfaces with the CPU. I dread having a long look at the schematics, but it seems like the next logical step.

If you boot the game with the ribbon at the sound board removed, what sound do you hear?

I can try it tonight. But upon boot, the sound isn’t there. It doesn’t begin until the first game has been completed.

I have a TZ too, worst case, this weekend I’ll swap parts to see where the error is at. Cable first, then the sound board, then the CPU. Hope it doesn’t come to all of that, ha ha.

All Creatures do this. Especially with the volume up. I went down this rabbit hole years ago. It was a software bug that was never fixed.

Thanks!! I was about to test the thing apart. Bummer they didn’t fix this.

I can't believe I've never heard of this before.
Thanks for posting the resolution.
