My TOTAN recently developed this sound board error. It does reset itself after being powered down and allows play, but 9x's out of 10 it shuts down during the first game and gives me the 10 bongs. What has me puzzled is that it does different things every time it shuts down.
1. It has popped shut sound down but allowed the game to continue.
2. It has completely shut the game down.
3. It has started the pop bumpers popping continuously.
4. It has turned the DMD off and another time lit every cell in it constantly.
I did pull and replace all of the connections to the board but it did not help. The only error I have ever received is the Sound Board RAM error and Sound Error 3.62. If anyone has experienced this problem or has any ideas, any help would be appreciated. Thanks

One of the 3 ram chips on the sound board is likely flaky or on its way out.

If you aren't sure how to troubleshoot/interpret that, probably is time to send it out.

#3 10 years ago

Any recommendations on who to have take a look at it or who to troubleshoot it?

#4 10 years ago

As JWJ notes, the usual problem is one of the 3 RAMs.
But, the problem could be due to other issues too.
...failed or failing ribbon cable.
...buffer ICs on either side of the ribbon.
...crappy solder joints at the quad flat-pack.

I can fix it, and my queue is short right now.
Send me a PM to [email protected]
Google RGP or here on PinSide for my rep.

Chris, As you requested I posted a couple of vids of what the game is doing.

It is really hard to draw any conclusions from the two videos.
I'd probably start swapping boards, or find a friend that you can test your boards in his game.

Not resolved! New update is Sound board was placed in another TOTANs with no issue. I have also replaced all the ribbon cables. Now my game in addition to giving the U10-12 Sound board errors is randomly giving a G10 error. Keeps resetting itself and giving 10 bongs. DMD is also flaking out. At times the game will go days without error. Not sure what steps to take next.

Did you place your MPU in that TOTAN with a known good AV board?
Does your MPU have battery corrosion damage?

This sounds like it could be a 5V problem. Is it worse when the game is first turned on, and goes away once it is warm? If so, you need to check out the thermistor in the power box.

#10 9 years ago

In regard to these last 2 posts; there is no battery corrosion and the problems arise at anytime.
Chris, I really need to know if I should send out one of these boards to you or have the game looked at. I just hate to pay $100 an hour to be told I need to send the boards out.

I think I'd do a lot more tinkering before I'd call anyone. This is such an odd problem, no repairman can be sure he's found the problem during a single service call.

An idea....reseat the ASIC on the MPU board.
If you don't have a proper PLCC puller, remove the MPU board.
Lay it on a clean, hard, flat surface.
Press firm down on the center of the ASIC.
Retest.

This mildly changes the ASIC connection to the chip carrier.
The reason I'm suggesting this is because of the diverse failure symptoms your game exhibits.

You should absolutely do the 5V troubleshooting process, and I would still start with the thermistor.

Does the sound sometimes get louder or softer than you had set it? A reset during gameplay causes that.

Which chip on the MPU is the ASIC? I will reseat all of them but want to make sure I pay special attention to that one.
Pam, As far as the 5v testing. Unfortunately that is way over my head. I also can't say I have had the sound change much other than it completely goes off from time to time.
Thanks to you both for the attention on this. I really appreciate it.

ASIC is the big square chip on the CPU.

How repeatable is the problem?
Does it happen every minute, hour, or day?

Pulled the MPU and pushed all the chips and they were seated good. Fired the game back up and started adjusting settings (because the game took a hard reset), while adjusting settings the dmd started flickering/buzzing and then showed a G10 error accompanied by the 10 bongs and was then silent. Shut down and restarted to similar resets and dmd flickering. I can say that the more I mess with it, the problem seems to be getting worse. Not sure what next step is other than sending out the boards or getting a tech over here.

well - can you switch out the power-driver board?

also - open and reseat all the connectors around the transformer, and maybe the AC connector as well.

10 bongs means U10 is bad

Just count the bongs....on 9 bongs it means U9 is bad

Did you fix this by replacing the U10? I'm having similar problems in my junkyard

It's not at all clear that the OP here had an actual RAM problem.

Did anyone figure out what the problem was with us? I’m having the exact same problem with the bongs and the audio crackling and the same error code
