At our museum, we recently purchased a used 2014 WOZ. We are having
all sorts of switch matrix issues. Any ideas of where to start
troubleshooting? Below is a quote from one of our tech:

"There are lots of odd switch matrix issues in this game. Closing the
upper slingshot switches on either slingshot will generate phantom
switch closure on the BALL standup targets and TOTO rollovers.
Similarly, pressing on the castle doors will generate phantom closures
on the monkey and winged standup targets. Wiggling the wire harness
under the castle will also cause a bunch of phantom switch closures.
Raising the playfield causes the VUK behind the crystal ball to work
correctly, lowering the playfield and tapping it gently will cause the
VUK to stop working and generates a bunch of odd switch closures.
Last, there is some issues with ball locking. Occasionally, locking a
ball will result in the usual ball lock graphics, but no ball is
placed in the shooter lane."

Quoted from LTG:

I'd start with the basics. Look at each switches wiring. Wires in the right spots, diode on facing the right direction ? nothing shorting to switch wiring or lugs ?

Thanks. We have done that, as much as we can - considering the number of switches involved. A diode problem could fit the phantom switch closure issue. But the wiggling the wire harness causing a bunch of switch closures does not. Nor does moving the playfield around making closures seem to indicate a diode issue.

It is a system wide problem - it would be entertaining to watch the switch matrix go crazy, then not, if we did not have to fix it.

As to shorting to switch or lugs, that is another issue.

I have tackled switch matrix issues before, but nothing this widespread, complex and dependent on wire movements.

We have heard that early WOZ had issues with connectors. Not sure that this is related or not.

Where to start? Anyone have any likely areas where this has happened before?

Quoted from LTG:

Back of the big metal box with the boards. Take the lid off. The connectors back there, push together tight both sides. Look for any loose wires in a connector.

Thanks. Will do.
