Just grabbed a WOZ standard "project" machine. I say project because it is partially disassembled and missing a few parts. I haven't done an exhaustive list of what all is missing and that may take a good while. For now though, I know the CPU/computer is not present along with the security dongle. I emailed JJP support about getting one of those. Can anyone provide some info on sourcing a new PC? I am very familiar with building/repairing PC's. Is there a specific chipset required? I saw H61 which is pretty old at this point. Can I grab something more modern and load that up? I would love to put in a faster SSD or even NVMe drive if possible.

Quoted from FlippyD:

Factory already uses an SSD and an NVMe wouldn't really boost much. The only time you have to wait for loading is when turning the game on and it's pretty fast.
I don't know about using a newer mobo, but I do know you'll need to get the power supply from JJP if it's not in your cabinet. Hopefully it is since it's pricey. It's just a standard ATX PSU but it has a fully customized wiring harness. I tried replacing it with a quieter and more robust modular one but it was a non-starter.
Compatibility is going to be king here, you don't need to juice up the PC to improve loading speeds or frame rates or anything like that. And unfortunately older parts tend to be pricier too.

I will check out the PSU situation tonight then for sure. I figure at least a modern SSD will be faster than what was around 8 years ago, but at NVMe probably isn't necessary.

For the CPU/motherboard any insight into what some later models used would be cool for sure. I can always hop on ebay and grab an older H61/i5 or whatever, but newer would be better for lifecycle sake.

Will the game boot at all without the security dongle?

#12691 2 years ago

It looks like I do have both power supplies. The PC board is simply missing along with the USB security dongle. JP service got back to me. 299 for a motherboard/CPU/RAM combo. That is not that bad, but may be able to be sourced elsewhere for a bit less. The security dongle he said they have to check with the factory about them. So hopefully it can be replaced for a reasonable cost. I also asked that they add me to the notification list for the 2.0 light board kit.

Quoted from pinballinreno:

The PC will boot just fine but it wont load the game code.

Can the service menu be accessed without the dongle? Thinking through if I could source the PC and possibly test/troubleshoot in the even it takes a bit to source the dongle.

Following up on where I am with my project woz. I have had a few emails with Ken at JJP support. He added me to the list for light boards. I don't know if I need them or not at this point but a couple were removed and they are the original style. So I am leaning towards at least some are in need of replacement.

The security dongle it sounds like is not something that is commonly replaced. Once their service manager returns from vacation next week they will ask about it.

A replacement PC from JJP is 299. I may order that at the same time as the dongle assuming the dongle can be ordered.

Quoted from LTG:

Something wrong with yours ? It should be sticking out the back of the metal box plugged into the motherboard area.
It knows your game and serial number. Your game won't boot without it.
LTG : )

I bought a non-working game from a buddy. He got it from an operator that was clearing out a bunch of inventory. The PC is gone completely and there is no security dongle to be found. The operator was taking a look around, but honestly they cleared out so much stuff to a number of buyers, that I don't have any real hope it would turn up there. The mini playfields are present, but not installed in the machine. There are some other parts either missing or taken off the game. First step for me is getting a PC and dongle so I can start the assembly and troubleshooting process.

Quoted from John_in_NC:

OBO, these are useless to me other than to recoup some of what I had to put into the 2.0. Will sell boards individually 50c on the dollar

Hey buddy!
I may take you up on some at some point. I ended up with the WoZ Robert got from your group buy. I have the PC and security coming as they were missing. I can't really test or troubleshoot anything right now though.

Quoted from John_in_NC:

I'd recommend 2.0 for that game. Too many unknowns with how it was apparently cannibalized.

I am on the 2.0 list. JJP said it would likely not be available until the very end of the year though.

My new PC and security dongle arrived today from JJP. Hopefully I can find some time to install soon.

H310CM is the new board set they are sending out.

Anyone have a spare 2.0 kit or one they may not use in the next few months prior to new kits shipping? I took another look and I am missing a few random light boards. I would much rather do the job once and get the lighting sorted out rather than installing second hand boards and still needing to upgrade again later. Thanks

Darn that's a lot of coils to change one after the next one.
Do you think a power conditioner would do the trick ?

Perhaps he meant the software power setting.

Quoted from DCFAN:

Did anybody else see the latest episode of Ted Lasso? Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis) was playing a WOZ standard edition in a bar.

Yes indeed. He is also a big Kansas City guy with a ton of references to Kansas and KC in the show. I wonder if they went with WoZ due to the Kansas references from the movie too.

Quoted from RikV:

I called them up months ago and got on the list...any ETA on the board set? I could design my own boards in the time that I've been waiting...

I was told at the end of the year they plan to have them.

FYI JJP charged me 300 for a new mainboard which includes the CPU and memory.

The new ones are a different chipset which will not support the old CPU and memory.

Replacing only your motherboard will likely be much less expensive assuming your CPU and memory are still good.

I tried both. Used us first then tried the other one.
