We have a posted a video taken last night on TaylorVa's Woz with software updated to 1.22. There are lots of good updates in this newest release. New insert displays, flipper modes, callouts and updated animations. At 6:57, you can see the no hold flippers crystal ball mode. The flippers pop like a tap pass and then fall back down. At 8:35, there is a successful toto restart that starts multiball.

I'm jealous I can't be there for pin nights. Does Taylor have a dedicated camera mount now?

#3 10 years ago

Thank you for posting the video!

Wow, just wow. This game is looking better and better with every code update. I think what JJP has made here is very special and even with the code in its current state I can see WOZ going down as one of the best pinball machines ever made. I can't imagine just how much better this game will get once the two wizard modes and Haunted Multiball are in place.

The new animations as well as polished existing animations look really nice and wow do a lot of those lighting effects look really cool. More excited then ever to get my game!

#4 10 years ago

We attached my rig to a tripod and the beam next to WOZ. He is still working on the dedicated setup.

Congrats on winning the York doorprize!

i think you're going to be nominated as being Pinsides biggest JJP fanboy.

Already wins by FARRRRRRRR...

#7 10 years ago

Can we officially change WoZ acronym to WoW??
Seriously I stated this in the code update thread but ..
I can't get over the difference between the last updates and this one.. Well done!

Keep it going...keep it going

#8 10 years ago

Wizard of Oz, theme aside, is the best pinball machine in the history of the world. I'm serious. However, if JJP does with TH what they've done only so far with WOZ, then the title won't last long.

Lol! I didn't say it was the best pinball machine ever...wait for there to be a couple more code updates released and then I will say that haha

Thanks for the video. The no hold flippers are very clever, is that a first?

The GI issue is real and it's not fixable via code. A GI kit is a necessity to play with dim ambient lighting.

I'm actually with you on that. I spent a day this week at the Silverball Museum in Asbury Park. Played most of the top ten machines (as rated by this site and on the IPDB). After owning a WOZ for over a month, the other machines seemed too easy and just quaint, old-fashioned. I left before my two hours were up so I could go home and play my WOZ. WOZ is to the DMD display machines of the last couple decades, as the DMD machines were to the EM machines that preceded the SS machines. It's a giant leap forward in technology and pinballing. The haters, for the most part, are people that just don't own one yet.

#13 10 years ago

You know, it's possible to admire what JJP has done without actually wanting to own the machine. The music alone makes it certain that I'll never shell out that much cash for one, I was going slightly nuts just watching that video. The call outs get really old too, basically the whole sound package is pretty irritating. I played it at Expo, and I'd like to play it more, I wish someone I played with regularly owned one so I could mooch. But it's not for my home.

That doesn't make me a "hater", can we drop the labels?

Hey Aurich
I can understand what you are saying. When I did get my machine it had the 1.8 code in it and the callouts were very repetitive. With the latest update though I find i hear them less then before. Its a whymiscial theme ..no doubt.

For me it's like this..Once you get passed that and accept it LOL... you really really appreciate it.

+1

My good friend told me once, "Yeah, but it's Wizard of Oz. I'm flipping ruby red slippers and skipping down the road. I'm out"

Thanks for posting Boo. That thing is fricking beautiful, and lots going on (and to do).

You really don't notice the callouts that much, and as stated previously, with each iteration of software it becomes less and less repetitive, just as the music is becoming more varied as well. And you'll notice I said "for the most part" when talking about haters. You, obviously, are not one since you don't hate the machine. I'm talking about the people that can't find anything good to say about it when it's clearly a work of art. So the labels stay, I'm afraid, because I calls 'em as I sees 'em!

PS - I'm pretty sure if you were able to mooch off someone, you'd eventually come around to the dark side and buy your own...and you're welcome to visit anytime!

#18 10 years ago

Thanks for the video. You can really see how you rack up points when you have multiple modes going. Good third ball on that last game.

#19 10 years ago

I don't mind the theme. I think the slipper flippers are clever. Anyone who thinks Wizard of Oz isn't manly or something needs to get a life.

But none of you can talk away the sounds. I've played it. I played it last Saturday, dunno if the Expo machines were 1.21 or 1.22 code, I sucked at it and didn't get very far. Would I like to try more? Hell yes, definitely. But I'm just not paying eight thousand dollars for something that plays that music and to listen to the Scarecrow telling me to make haste all the time, it's just not for me. Sound is a super important part of pinball for me.

Frankly I kind of hope I don't like the Hobbit too, because I'm afraid I'll want it and I don't even want to know how damn expensive it will be by the time it's released. I can't justify these prices for games. Once you pass the low $6k it's just too much to swallow, whether or not I have the cash in hand.

#20 10 years ago

Great video thanks! The more I look at this the more I want one. I am checking into shipping costs to NZ now...

Do you want to drop all the labels or just the one's you want to drop? Believe it or not, some people DON'T LIKE THE THEME because it's ruby red slippers skipping down the yellow brick road. I apologize for inferring that that was one of the reasons that you don't, you've corrected me. But, those who don't like the theme because it IS girly "need to get a life?"

#22 10 years ago
Quoted from Rush1169:

Yes. It's not girly, it's a classic movie set in an awesome world and backed by a lot of great books. People who think otherwise, and I especially mean the mouth breathers who make gays jokes, need to get. a. life.

Exactly. It's one thing to not like aspects of the game like maybe the sound but to dismiss the theme based on some kind of odd prejudice is horrible.

#24 10 years ago

Personally I think the theme is awesome as the film / book is timeless, is quest based and in my opinion it's quest based pins (ex. LOTR) that are the most fun and have deep rules that keep bringing you back.

See? You're not a hater at all! You were playing 1.22 last weekend - I just put it on my machine and it's brilliant. While I can see where you're coming from with the callouts, I just want to tell you that your mind only focuses on the callouts the first few times you play it. After a while it just becomes background noise that blends in with the music. And as I said before, the callouts and music are becoming much more varied so that it's not monotonous. I wish you lived closer to Jersey...I'd have to convert you!

#27 10 years ago

here is another video shot last night. The quality sucks but you can see the GI in the first video is somewhat exaggerated. The game does not appear that dark when playing but is just how it looks on video.

The gameplay and quality of this video sucks.

Yep, looks like a $119 mod to really make the GI pop.

#29 10 years ago

For people interested in hearing some of the music from WOZ checkout the video below. I find that the music has been done extremely well and provides a great feel to the game thanks to Chris Granner (LOTR) doing the tracks.

Find the girly movie: Star Trek : Into the Darkness, The Matrix, You've Got Mail, or The Godfather

-----------

That's the context in which I'm referring when one considers WoZ to be girly. Nothing about 'some kind of odd prejudice' or gay jokes or any other extreme interpretation you can apply to the word 'girly.' When you found the girly movie above, was it because of something you have against gay people or because it was just self-evident?

-----------

Anyway, thanks for posting the video!

No because the word "GAY" was used. Not "Girly". It wasn't an interpretation.

Actually, I was thinking either Star Trek or The Matrix. At least people who go see You've Got Mail can get a date.

I completely understand where you are coming from. 1.22 is much better than 1.21 in regards to repetitious music.
I do think when you are actually playing it is far less noticeable.

Lots going on. Still not sure % of code. Hard to tell when you get your ass handed to you.

The first video makes it seem much darker than it plays. That being said I did add the starpost mod and it was an issue without them IMO.

Thanks for showing us the new codework. This game never ceases to amaze me. Every day I get more anxious for mine, and it should be here before thanksgiving. I already bought the extra playfield lighting kit so I'll be a happy camper right outa the chute!

Well, you may see it this way. However, I don't think I am alone when saying that WOZ probably caused me more nightmares than any other movie when I was a child. The of the tornado scene, witch, flying monkeys and scarecrow on fire are still scaring new generations of kids including my own.

The "scary" aspect seems to be a pre-requisite of many pinball collectors this day. My eight year old sits and laughs at zombie guts on the Walking Dead but cowers in the corner when the witch makes her first appearance in WOZ.

So, go ahead and keep talking about the "girly" aspect of WOZ. In the meantime, a long dead Margaret Hamilton will go on scaring generations of children and keeping them up at night.

Buy them from the original source, Tony @ GLM:

I love this game. Its a lot of fun. Its amazing how changes to the LED insert lighting can change the entire feel of the game. I personally do not have a problem with the music and sounds.

#43 10 years ago

The GLM post light board looks pretty sweet, but they're selling the LEDs for $10 a pop, Cointaker has them for $6. Adds up fast when you're doing slingshots + other areas, I did 10 on my Shadow.

#44 10 years ago

WOZ does not use starpost, they are a mod in themselves.

Point taken.

Like in the John's Arcade video where he says "The build quality is fantastic" (paraphrasing) I don't think they're much argument there. Packed with innovative technology.

However for some of us, we can't get past the theme. It's a musical. Is it iconic? Yes, but it's still a musical from 1939 based on a children's book from 1900. Some just don't dig it.

Good vids though, guys.

I agree. I still get the shivers when I see that tornado flying around in that background. Plus, you can't think of a Halloween witch without thinking of Margaret Hamilton's portrayal of one. I remember watching an interview with her and how she was initially happy when she found out she was getting a role in the movie. She thought she would be cast as the good witch, and was shocked when her agent told her she was wanted for the witch role instead. Very funny how she told the story to the interviewer years later. Very gracious woman and she did a beautiful job on the role handed to her. Thank you Margaret!

I was at one time contemplating selling my WOZ, but my wife (who is a HUGE WOZ fan), was always the voice of reason into talking me into keeping the pin, and she rarely plays my pins. From Day One she always told me WOZ is her pin. Around Easter time they always play The Wizard of OZ on TV in my area, so now I'm looking forward to playing and enjoying this pin as well. Mine shipped yesterday and I can't wait to finally see what all the fuss is about! Woo Hoo!

#48 10 years ago

The theme is the theme, wont change. I dont like it, but it is how it is. Not a big fan of the layout.

But still, this pin is going great. I love it. The only thing what would be a gamebreaker for me, if i was in. Is that awful main music.

I think, this video, and then with other music, or way more variation in music, or just off, would blow me away.

But i cant get passed it, it does annoy me to much to sit back and enjoy the videos.

#49 10 years ago

The GI is no big deal to me, I don't play in complete darkness.......yes, its the greatest pin eva!

#50 10 years ago

a couple more
Lights were very dim in the gameroom. I think one reason the playfield shoots so dark is the LEDs are crazy bright still.

Better quality from the first one I shared as well as has the attract light show which is pretty cool.

I make a hasty retreat at the end of one of the videos. My daughter woke up and I had to take her back to bed, priorities.
