I kinda like NASCAR more. However, it was much better in the 70's.

I've lived in Indy my entire life (56 years). I've only been to the race once...never again, just not my scene. Especially in this heat...no way!

I wish I could watch it live, but the race is blacked out for all of central Indiana...as always.

That is to bad. Does the Black out apply even if the race is sold out?

How it’s referred to as the, “greatest spectacle in racing” is beyond me. I went once just to check it out and it’s horribly boring!

It was the 100th running a couple years back...and yes, we actually were able watch it live on local TV.

I couldn't care less. Last year my nephew took me a NASCAR at Texas Motor Speedway.

Most boring event I have ever attended.

I think events like this need to be seen once to be believed. Went to 1 Nascar, which does not interest me in the least, and the shit is mind blowing. It's so massively huge and louder than I could have ever imagined.
Hillfolk watching is fun too...don't know if open wheeled draws a diff'rent crowd though.

I went to several Brickyard 400 races, including the hottest one. The bleachers are all metal so it just magnifies the heat. There was a fairly large guy sitting in front of us and he wasn't doing well, but still drinking. Halfway through the race he threw up on the guy in front of him. Thankfully, the receiver of the unfortunate bit of luck was as cool as I could imagine anyone ever being after having beer thrown up on them. Just turned around, asked if the guy was alright, and went to buy a souvenir shirt and get cleaned up a bit. He even returned to his seat later.

But yeah, drinking all day isn't quite as fun when it's so hot and there isn't any room to breathe anything other than the dust from the cars being blown up into the stands. It's way more fun when it's a bit cooler.

Went to a race back in the early eighties with a bunch of college buddies... drank a lot and wasn’t familiar with “ how to watch” the race. I tried following the cars as the flew by. That coupled with the noise and beer made me a little sea sick . There is a method to viewing the race that I quickly learned ! The start of the race with the high scream of the engines is intense and really pretty cool but once is enough.

The same types come out for this race as well. My one and only time going midway through the race a dude completely hammered was watching the race standing up just hanging out on the stairs. Dudes pants fell down and he’s just standing there for what felt like 5 minutes naked from the waist down in the aisle way. Eventually security escorted him out.

We parked in some dudes yard for $20 which was relatively close to the track. Post race I brought a mini gas grill to have a mini cookout while waiting for traffic to die down. The owner of said house tried selling shots to folks stuck in traffic and those walking by. He also tried starting a wet t shirt contest. His last brilliant idea was to spray down drivers of cars whom had their windows down in standstill traffic. This lasted until a dude who was sprayed got out and socked him in the face.

Yep, that sounds like a typical Indy 500.....LOL

I live there and left for the weekend!

I was in Indiana in mid May earlier this month, but schedule didn't work out for me to go to the race this year, nor to watch it on tv.

Gryszzz and I went last year and the yr before. My daughter joined us last year to check it out.

May 2017, 101st running of the Indy 500. Had good weather and a huge crowd, but not quite as big as for the yr before.

I can respect the history and location of the race, but it wouldn’t be on my bucket list. As a sports junkie, I’ve attended nhl, mlb,nba, nfl, pga and 4 nascar races..all in Fontana..I don’t watch/follow as much as I use to w all the changes/formats. Plus w the shitty exchange rate on the dollar..$ that I could use for another game..

There had been a lot of green flag fast racing goin on though at least 170+ of 248 laps on this 1.5 mile fairly high banked fast track.
I guessed right that a mental mistake was gonna be made with all that continuous intense action. Two cars just got into each other and are both damaged and out of the race. Wickens and Carpenter I believe.

Was that the Age of Quarrel tour shit that album will punch you in the eye.

New Zealand driver Scott Dixon won the Tx Indy car race. He's won there before. He's won Indycar championships. When he's got a good car and the pit crew is on, then he is money, or as Gryszzz might say, he is clutch.

The man who was found dead in one of the parking lots of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this weekend "lived and breathed" for the Indianapolis 500, his wife said.

Adam Melchi, a 38-year-old who lived in Plano, Ill, had been going to the race for 21 years, Sarah Melchi said.

The father of five told Sarah awhile ago that he wanted his ashes spread at the track. Together they were planning to get a commemorative brick at IMS when they were older, she said.

"He was such a huge fan," she said. "And it's devastating he died at the place where he wanted ashes spread."

I hope to drive up to Indiana probably in July to visit family & friends, and figure out some fun stuff to do.

You can down vote me all you want. It is a year later here and my opinion is still the same. Tailgating in the parking lot? Yeah, I like to party. But to watch the race? Nah.

No hard feelings Cotton--I've always liked you bud--I just don't think you can compare ANY other race/racetrack to the Indy 500. When I was a kid it was 500,000 people descending on my neighborhood. It was, and is, a UUGE party. I've been to like, 20 races and prob seen 20 minutes of racing lol. It's a great party!

Mike this year the race falls on my daughter's 10th birthday, so unfortunately no, I can't make it. Hope you can make it up sometime soon though buddy.
Violent Steve's kids hs marching band is in the parade on Sat and Sun they march on the track before the race this year. Kid is pretty musically talented already! So he'll be here sat night to party.

Yeah. I suppose there is the magic of the Brickyard that can't be beat. I mean Indy was the first.

I would not mind going back in time to watch the early days of racing when it was balls out. But now everybody is making the circuit and racing for points. The Nascar I saw was end of season; It was the last race for that long haired brunette chick; Everybody had their points for the year; So all they did was drive the miles and make noise.

I also discovered that the cheap seats were down in front where you could not see anything. For a twist, the further back and higher in the bleachers you were, the more that seat cost.

I went because I got box seats to pole day. Was neat to walk around the pits and see the garages. Got to watch the cars take off from a dead stop within arms reach. Would I go for free if I wasn't for that? Not a chance. Watching the cars got real old real fast.

The Indy 500 pinball machine is great. The race, not so much.

Back in college we had Indy 500 parties with specific rules. You would pick a driver, and were required to guzzle beer during the entire duration of his pit stop.

I've forgotten most of the rules, but remember we would drink every time Chris Economaki was reporting from the pit, or every time there was a lead change. We had a big chart of the track with cars representing each drinker's position in the race. Beer was poured from a gasoline can.

I'll throw my 6 cents in (thanks to recent pinflation) I'll say while I'm not a Nascar fan, one weekend a neighbor had tickets and offered to take me and my boys along with him, WHOA it was amazing! I was awestruck and had a fantastic time.
I'd long been an Indy fan and would jump at the chance to see one of their races. They brought the circuit here to Houston a while back and it just never worked out that I could atten, but the the OPs comments about the CART/ Indy issues and splitting up, that is about when I quit watching on TV. I'd still go see a race though.

I have zero interest in racing, but if a friend offered me a ticket I would sure try to find a way to go to experience it.

I have not been to a Friday night dirt track race in years. And years. But that 1/4 oval track is where you will see racing action.

It is like watching kids' baseball games---if you keep the parents hogtied and gagged.

I go to the practices for the photo ops. Went last friday with my Dad. He's never seen anything bigger than a circle dirt track. So this was a different experience for him.
