No hard feelings Cotton--I've always liked you bud--I just don't think you can compare ANY other race/racetrack to the Indy 500. When I was a kid it was 500,000 people descending on my neighborhood. It was, and is, a UUGE party. I've been to like, 20 races and prob seen 20 minutes of racing lol. It's a great party!

The Indy 500 is "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing".

There's a lot of things I find over-rated too. Hockey, Tennis, and Soccer on TV, U2, Drake, Imagine Dragons, avocados, street tacos, Qudoba, Black Panther, Wonder Woman, & Captain Marvel.

Hockey?! Maybe overrated by Canadians, but in Indianapolis? Underrated, if not ignored completely.

Hockey is all over TV right now. No need for it.

This year's Indy 500 new date is now Sun Aug 23, 2020, and NBC will air the race.

This thread got me to thinking. I only recall seeing part of one race. When Swede Savage died in a crash. I had to look it up. 1973.

I love driving fast. I never cared for watching races ?

I am glad it's there for people who love the sport.

I feel that’s a tiny bit optimistic but who knows

Have you played Indy 500 pinball?

Yes. Had one in the mid 2000's. Good game here. I liked it.

It’s very good. Agree. Constantly in and out of multiballs. Tons of little modes along the way. Software has some little bugs, but I think it’s one of the finest designed games around. Nordman and team really captured the essence of the race into pinball form.

...So Levi, I guess you feel the races scheduled from May 30th through Aug 9th are more than just a tiny bit optimistic.

Perhaps some (revised) early season races may get run with no fans in attendance. ??

They hope to run the St. Pete race later in the season (Oct date tbd). The St. Pete race was to be the season opener as usual, but has been postponed (or canceled if things don't work out) I believe.

    #66 4 years ago

We could see races without crowds. Nothing should be surprising anymore.

Indy 500 Pace Cars over the years. Good stuff.

    #69 3 years ago

I went once and don’t feel the need to again.

I didn’t see what was so great about it. Possibly I just didn’t attend the right party.

The NHRA U.S. Nationals are another story though. I really enjoy that.

For just the 2nd time in history, I'll be able to watch the race live on TV. They decided to lift the local black-out.

Indy 500 today. They just did the driver intros. Good weather today.
1st time in 33 yrs that an Andretti has the pole position.
Will a rookie driver cause a wreck this yr?
Will Marco screw things up again, or will he contend for a win?
Will Alonso have a fast car and be able to contend at the end?
Will Helio get his 4th win?

I never went before, so I can't imagine I would go now.

    Funny story:
My boss is a really wealthy guy with phenomenal connections. A few years ago he gave me 6 NASCAR tickets with pit passes that included meet and greets with all the drivers. Apparently it would have cost thousands, but I got it for free. I'm not a race car guy, so I just gave it all to my neighbor. He was pretty stoked.

    #83 3 years ago

Went with the same group of guys for a few years. We quit going when the IRL/CART split happened.
Lots of fun, but I can do without the heat and all day sun today.
Plus, no people watching with no crowd. Drunk, sunburned dudes were the best entertainment.

Damn. Always sucks to finish under caution. Thought Dixon was gonna win all day. But I was rooting for Graham Rahal as he owns an I500 restored by Pinsider "Pacer".
Mike maybe next year we can party with the young gals again lol.

Sato won and got $1.37M check and a new corvette similar to the pace car corvette.
    Dixon got 2nd, & G Rahal got 3rd.
There were some race cars that got dinged up hitting the walls during the race.

I would rather go to a Formula 1 Grand Prix myself.

Not hating on Indy Car though, I watch a few races a year and enjoy it.

Today would I attend? No. Too much risk. I was lucky to attend in 2000 as a Firestone employee who won a sales contest to attend. VIP all the way. We had private tours of the pits the day before plus private access to the museum. On race day we had chartered busses with police motorcycles blocking traffic to usher us right in. Full access to everything. They had a huge tent with all the food and drink you could want. I could walk at the top of each turn and was amazed as the cars sped by. Then a rain delay, more food and drink. After the race Juan Montoya came to our tent and signed autographs and shook hands with everyone. AWESOME.

Just saw they're doing an automous race. Breifly looked at the details. Looks like students and companies write code to plug into one car, and the car will do 20 laps. That would be fun to watch in person for a bit. Curious how many cars they'll have on hand in case someone makes an error and it slams itself into the wall?

    #98 3 years ago

This is a race with no right turns, or real breaking from 200+ down to 30, right?

Not for me. I prefer motorcycle racing. Road course with gladiators duking it out.

I can see how it's entertaining for others though, glad you have it.

No general admission tickets to be sold this year for Indy 500 due to Covid concerns.

"Up to 40 % of venue capacity will be permitted, approx 135,000 fans.
Spectator viewing mounds will be closed to gen public with no Race Day General Admission tickets sold."

Helio Castroneves won his 4th Indy 500.
A lot of drivers messed up throughout the day trying to slow down for entering the pits.
