I thought the cabinet decorations on the more modern machines were actually large decals... I recall seeing a website with a restoration being done and they were showing the application of the decals. Tricky job to do right because they are so big -- need two people if I remember correctly. The older pins were clearly painted with a simple stencil pattern. I'm not sure which category your machine would be -- which one are we talking about?

In any case, if you wanted to redecal/restencil you'd start by stripping the old decoration away anyway, so by repainting in the interim, you are not really losing any options further down the track (except keeping it original). If it's unsightly as is, and it bothers you, and it's not a particularly rare or collectible machine, I'd have no problem with a custom cabinet job. Maybe you could even get arty and creative, do something interesting and unique, and and call it a custom "mod".

(If I can find that restoration webpage again I'll post the link.)
