Here is some good info from another thread...
I decided to give my son my '06 4-Runner, and did some serious research before I decided on a '16 Highlander as my replacement. As others have noted, "crossovers" are getting a lot less DMD-friendly. And the OP is right, the hatch opening needs to be able to consume a 31"X31" rectangle, or you'll have to remove the head of the DMD.
I wanted something a little less truck-like this time around, and I looked at 4 different crossovers. I went to each dealership with a tape measure, and before I test-drove them I measured the hatch and cargo space. In the summary below, Dimensions are LxWxH. Width is measured along the flat top of the hatch (before it starts to turn down). The length (depth) is from the back of the console to the closed hatch. Height is from the top of the hatch opening to whatever the tape measure hits first
2016 Toyota Highlander: 79x41x32". Perfect.
2016 Kia Sorento: 74x43x30.75. 1/4" too short?
2016 Mazda CX-9: 62x39x29. Too short.
2016 Nissan Murano: 69x42x28. Too short.
