I've had an idea kicking around for a "Legends of America" game. Johnny Appleseed multiball, could be one mode, for example.

    Quoted from hAbO:

Although it would be a cool theme its sure to offend someone.

Doesn't mean it shouldn't be done for that reason alone though; if it bothers someone they just don't buy it. If the game won't sell at all because the theme bothers too many people, then it shouldn't be made.

    #53 6 years ago

If it has a B17, P51, or Corsair I would buy

    #54 6 years ago

Did the video games 1941 or 1942 really offend anybody?

    #55 6 years ago

To be clear, I gave no intention of making this game, purely an idea.

LIONMAN! goes to the disco is next game

    #56 6 years ago

    It's been done to death.

    http://www.ipdb.org/search.pl?yr=1939-46&tm=War&sortby=name&searchtype=advanced

...but adding flippers would be a new twist.

Also, might have to change a few of those names to be a little more PC.....

Seriously? Can you actually do ANYTHING without offending SOMEBODY. We are a permanently butthurt society.

And we are off on this tangent again...

I mean, I don't know man. I walked out of Saving Private Ryan shellshocked and emotionally drained. I don't remember thinking "wow this would make an AWESOME super fun pinball machine!"

It's not about offending people, it's about what sells in pinball. And I can't think of a single successful war-themed pinball machine since they started using flippers.

    Can you?

Depends on how you define 'war'... MM & AFR certainly have elements of that theme, don't they?

    Johnny Appleseed multiball

I learned a bit from my family heritage owning Apple Orchids from the late 1700's on in New England....

It wasnt for the Apple Pie, Trees, or the Healthy Apple...it was all for the Hard Alcoholic Cider!

Old Family letters bare out how they couldnt wait to "harvest, and get plastered!"

    Sorry..back to WWII.....

    Quoted from Deadpin:

Come on dude, that's not what this thread is about.

Guns, killing people, bombs, blood, trenches, barbed wire, mines, limbs being blown off...you know, WAR. Not war elements played for laughs, fantasy, or science fiction.

So no, Neither of those games you listed reflect a realistic, WWII-style war theme for me.

    #62 6 years ago

It wouldn't necessarily have to be as you describe it... all depends on the artwork and specific theme. If the right theme was made I could see this working.
It's strange you respond like that because TWD, Rob Zombie, some others are all about blood and gore, aren't they?
Sure, it's not a theme for everyone.... but what pin is?

What's strange is that you don't get the distinction between an actual realistic war theme and fantasy games like TWD, Rob Zombie, etc.

I don't think it's realistic to think Stern - or anybody else - would want to dip their toes into the blood-soaked, gut-strewn waters of a realistic war theme, especially considering how anything close to this has flopped in the past. I'm not even sure if you disagree with me, you just seem to want to convince me that Stellar Wars is the same thing as Platoon.

I could def see it....Lowrider mode, Steal the Wine multi-ball, Why Can't We Be Friends plays when you drain.

It's funny how we say something is "as american as apple pie" when, in reality, apples are native to parts of Asia, not the Americas, and were brought here by Europeans.

I see you took the same liberal arts college course as I did!

Should we let them all know that the Bald Eagle is actually indigenous to the Ukraine?

    #68 6 years ago

I don't think anyone is suggesting to put stacks of blown off limbs around little plastic landmines on the playfield. I don't think anyone is suggesting a photo-realistic depiction of the carnage of war.
I think you are imagining this theme as only being done in one way - a gory bloodbath that would be similar to what i just illustrated. As i said several posts back, you can do this theme justice without necessarily delving into the 'true bloody horrors' of war.

Battle of Britain for example can focus on planes and dog fights - don't need to show bombed out civilians, right?

Just make it a Halo pin, and be done.

Sure. I still don't think it would really work or be attractive to enough customers.

But the good news is, now that there are 15 pinball companies, you might be able to convince one of 'em to give it a shot!

I have my BS in environmental science and mathematics. Even though I had my concentration in engineering, we had to take a whole dendrology course literally just about trees. It was painful.

A "tall tales" pin would be neat, like monster bash but for folklore heroes.

    #74 6 years ago
    Quoted from OLDPINGUY:

Lets Steal some stuff already done.
Use the POTC Sinking ship, and make it a Battleship.
Use the Bomber, dead center from Tommy.
add a land mine course from Path of the Dead.
    Grab some stuff from IJ.
    A cannon Firing from AC/Dc
Maybe a beachfront lower play field.
Each branch has its missions, and the all work to end with the Enola Gay.
Multi Ball and overlapping Military Branch Modes, are orchestrated to the 1812 overture.
    Extra Flashers mounted for explosions.
    Include Big Band/Swing music.

Great ideas. Add the trolls from MM and make them pop up snipers or fox holes. Also, could make the same game layout in several themes with different s/w: WWII, Vietnam, Afghanistan.

I suspect military PXs, VFWs, American Legions, AmVets, etc., would buy a bunch of them.

    #75 6 years ago

How about a Hunting Hitler pin? Could shoot the scoop (Bunker), bash toy could be the sub that got him across the Atlantic, etc. Maybe a conspiracy type WWII game would be more easy to digest for some? Although I don't think a general WW2 theme game would be offensive as it's history.

Your theory is that War doesn't sell.
Most popular game in video games by far: Call of Duty series featuring modern warfare, ww2, etc
Battlefield 1 was a huge seller last year and in past years featuring the same wars
And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

It may not sound appealing to you, but games based upon it are some of the biggest sellers ever.

    #77 6 years ago
    Quoted from bangerjay:

I was thinking the buildup and progress towards a goal would lend itself to good gameplay. I mean we won? Right? I think I think it could be done w/o getting too specific or negative

That line of thinking may work in the USA but in the not so much in the EU

    #78 6 years ago
    Quoted from Deadpin:

but they are more scifi like.

    #79 6 years ago

Man, Battlefield 1 campaign is so awesome. I actually feel like I'm getting a history lesson to a degree.

With that said, I'm not sure it would carry over to a pinball machine. The LCD makes it a possibility though.

    Quoted from taylor34:

Your theory is that War doesn't sell.

    False.

My theory is that war in pinball doesn't sell. I'm not sure if you noticed - and based upon your fallacy-based argument you haven't - pinball machines are DIFFERENT than video game software. Pinball machines are gigantic and cannot be easily hidden from parents, guests, children, or anybody the game's owner might not want to see it. You (or your wife) don't have to consider whether or not you want D-Day or trench warfare to be a featured and permenant part of your home's decor before you buy a video game - with a pinball machine you do. Pinball machines are $7,000, not $70. Pinball machines have a silver ball and flippers, video games don't. Pinball games based upon war have flopped, video games haven't. They are different things in many, many ways. Bigly.

Perhaps we can agree to disagree on this one? I think I've made my point.

    #83 6 years ago
    Quoted from Dayhuff:

Not a good idea to base a game on a war that killed thousands of people.

    Thousands of people?

Better brush up on the statistics for WWII.

    #84 6 years ago

One wonders if Hitler ever played a pinball game. There were certainly plenty of them around during his reign, but I'm not sure how many made there way to Europe back then. I assume Europe thirst for pinball came after WWII, when machines were shipped over for American GI's to play.

I think, yes, literally, one wonders that. As in you. You are probably the ONLY person who has ever, in history, wondered that, as common sense dictates the idea is pretty ridiculous.

I always like how people think he planted apple seeds, all over, for the apples. He planted nurseries, fenced them, and checked back on them. And it was to make apple jack, not to eat.

He also planted Dog Fennel all over, he thought it was a medicinal herb, we know it as noxious invasive weed.

There are a million other sure-fire themes - why is anybody going to take a gamble on a theme that's never worked for pinball before and would alienate half the world?
Because Call of Duty is huge?
Who cares? So is Star Wars, without the risk. And a million other sure fire themes...
I feel as though we are going in circles. The only conclusion I can draw is that you REALLY want a historical-based war-themed pinball machine. That's great, good luck and I hope you get one.
    And....repeat...
Perhaps we can agree to disagree on this one? I think I've made my point.

I don't even know of a game based upon WWII other than some Gottlieb ones that never would have sold no matter what their theme was.

It's the perfect theme to introduce online functionality in for vs. battles.

You don't have to make it gross/graphic. You can do it in more of a Command and Conquer/Call of Duty style.

Your comments make me think that you've never played any of the Call of Duty/Battlefield games from the past 10 years. They aren't overly graphic for the most part because like you said, nobody would want that (which I agree). There's a line there.

At this point, I'm more interested in pondering the eternal questions: Did Musollini ever play Skee Ball? Did Eichmann ever relax with a nice game of lawn darts?

    #89 6 years ago

I think someone should make "Islam: The Pinball".

Now that would take more guts to make then some ordinary "Kill the nazis" pin hohohoh

You ego is amazing, as well as your propensity to spout of idiotic replies on Pinside. I'd dismiss you as a loon, if I didn't agree with about half of your posts.

What's so absurd about what I said? There were literally hundreds of thousands of pinball games by the 1940's, totally within the realm of possibility. I didn't ponder if Churchill ever flew to Mars and back, or if FDR used Mac or Windows.

    Get a grip.
