I secretly mod all my pins. Funny thing is, I have offered to remove mods and reduce the selling price and no one has ever taken me up on it.

I bet if Stern, JJP, etc started including some of the mods mentioned here then the story would be completely different for some reason…………….

I think people usually see Pinstadiums in photos/ads where the light is turned up to 100, and all sorts of colors. It looks like you could see that shit from space. I like to keep my gameroom dark for a few reasons (unfinished 120 year old basement ceiling with old and new wires poking out every which way + I want to emulate the dark neon look and feel of '80s arcades), so white, warm Pinstadiums with the brightness dialed down to about 40-50 are great for seeing darker games while keeping the room dark.

Pinstadiums can look like the inside of a clown's closet, but they can also just evenly light a game like this:

One of those things. Couldn't care less about toppers, and in 100 years sociologists are going to compare funko pops to how we now describe the use of leeches in 19th century medicine, but Pinstadiums fill a need for me. At some point I'll find the time to make similar lights myself.

Any mod that doesn't look like it could have come stock, generally. If it has wrong colors, doesn't match the iteration/era of the franchise, complex paint job against spot-color artwork, sticks out and looks wrong to my eyes.

There’s mods for certain machines I think are 100% necessary.
The lightning bolts on AC/DC for instance.
The way that machine came stock the flashers would pop out and be flying around the playfield every half dozen plays or so.
Didn’t matter if you hot glued them, zip tied them or whatever.
Bad design that was fixed with a mod.

Anyhow, if I like mods I buy them.
If not I don’t.

Saying all mods look like shit just isn’t true.

Consider the source. The titanpenguin couldn't understand that I was watching football and would find the pics later. He obviously thinks that he is better than others and entitled to get what he wants when he wants it. There was a football game on yesterday penguin. Most of us realized that. Couldn’t stand Pinstadiums for the longest time but I bought some for a couple games that I just couldn’t see shit on the playfield.
Black pinballs. The worst for me. Just can’t pick up the ball on the playfield to have good scores.

I agree with a few others, it’s kind of strange to bash other peoples choices in the hobby on the hobby forum. It’s clear Everyone has different opinions on mods and some people can hear a difference with an audio upgrade or value not being able to see the glass or having the pf lit up. Bashing specific mods because of how they look in one’s opinion is only self serving. Interesting that so many claim to hate mods but the mod sellers seem to be doing well enough and it’s kind of rare to get a pin now a days without something modded if not multiple things. Customization is a fun part of ownership for many people in many hobbies… no reason it shouldn’t be part of pinball.

In @strummy’s defense, that other guy was stupid in that thread and is warranting ejection in this thread.

Seriously though, most 3D printed mods look like ass. When I got Willy Wonka, the prior owner installed that red tube mod on the left wireform. Ugly piece of shit that broke in no time.

I do a good enough of 3D printed projects & if they just took more time sanding/priming the mods & lacquered them they would look so much nicer. But then again if they did that the price would be even more $$ :O It's all very subjective; but I can tell you from experience if you slice STL proper it can be extremely strong!!

I'd say many if not the overwhelming majority of alternate translites are the worst mods ever. Particularly the ones that just feature a hot chick and barely have anything to do with the game. They are tacky and gaudy and stick out like a sore thumb. The Getaway one in particular is horrendous. Its got a picture of a ferrari for some reason, then the obligatory hot chicks, and the picture is taken in like rural Kansas or something instead of in the mountains like the rest of the art in the game. Translites like this are for dirty old men without a clue
