    Quoted from Mk1Mod0:

New to me - bought some boards to rehab and resell and didn't look closely enough at the pictures. Apparently we ordered the wrong part or just went with what the local Radio Shack carried. Not one, but two of the five had this mod performed. Did it work? Sure! is it hack-ish? Yep. Someone out there may even recognize the work...

Ingenious! Took me a minute to even notice the actual mod.

Not something I would do, but in a pinch....sure looks like it worked.

    #1291 6 years ago

I think that turned out half-decent.

Not something I'd ever do, but it doesn't look THAT bad.

Makes me think the guy did that to appeal to the wife and make it match their other furniture more.

    Quoted from DumbAss:

I always forget to take photos before starting work.
Two different kinds of creative solutions on the same board.
1- Two sockets of different manufacturers and sizes combined into one.
2- One socket that is too large with excess pins removed (also inserted in the incorrect direction).

I'm getting a headache just from looking at that.

This is the kind of thing I love to repair.
With my OCD the way it is, even if that worked, I'd have to fix it.

Lots and lots of lifted pads, so good luck with that!
I imagine the back of the board is just as bad, if not worse.

    #1368 6 years ago
    Quoted from Archytas:

Is it fixing it if it already works? Just to play devil's advocate.

Yes, because I would lose sleep over that.

    #1380 6 years ago

Not really the worst ever, but this is pretty bad. And aggravating.

    Quoted from GRUMPY:

That's an isolation transformer that Canada required to be installed on imports from America. It just wastes electricity, remove and sell on Ebay.

Or use for your next arcade project?

I did the exact same thing with an Alley Cats, but made it look much nicer.

    #1729 5 years ago

To alarm what though? If the coin door is opened?

I wonder how many of these hacks were done other people here, but they're too ashamed to admit it?

    Quoted from vec-tor:

When Meteor came out by Stern, the "dead" bumper caps had small screws installed.
    I know, I know, I know.
I guess somewhere in production, or operator input at the time, made a change...
The Meteor game, I had, that was purchased back in 1981 had screws installed.
One in the front, and one in the back... just like in the picture above.
The screws were on both "dead" bumpers on the upper playfield.

    Quoted from ForceFlow:

Most of the noise comes from the clack of the plunger against the coil stop--I don't think rubber rings on the pop body would do much to help with noise.

I agree, but maybe they THOUGHT they were making a difference?

    #2226 4 years ago

Putting a smaller one around the base of the bulb may offer some relief when the bulb is loose! I don't think it would last long though.

I probably have more money tied up in crimp tools and consumables than some do in their entire toolbox lol.

I bet I could give you a run for your money.

    Quoted from Robotworkshop:

I just made one nice credit display for a Pinbot out of two complete hack jobs. The first picture is a board with a brand new display glass that someone had trouble installing properly. It actually worked but was just awful. I had previously picked up a bad credit display with the nipple broken off the back and one of the worst solder jobs I've ever seen. There are so many obvious shorts the person soldering must have had extremely poor eyesight or just didn't have a clue.
I was able to clean off all the excess solder and transfer over the nice display to the board with intact traces and ended up with one nice display.[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

These are the jobs I enjoy doing the most. Taking a massive stinking turd and turning it into something polished and better than new. It really soothes my OCD seeing the before and after of a job well done.

I remove all inserts and replace with all clear. That way I can use LEDs to make them whatever color the client wants.

Its also the only way to test the lamps are working... if I recall correctly from the last one I worked on.

    #3150 2 years ago
    Quoted from frenchmarky:

That's weird, if they are controlled lamps why wouldn't they just flash on and off with all the rest of the lamps in the lamp test, like EBD's DELUXE lamps do?

I agree, but I definitely remember something about these lights acting weird when we switched them over to LEDs (aside from the usual mods needed to get LEDs to work in a Bally).

    Quoted from uncivil_engineer:

I will admit this one is one I did. When I got the board, the heat sink was missing over the bridge rectifiers. I had a bunch of heat sinks left over from replacing old 5v regulators, so I decided to repurpose a couple for the rectifiers. It’s not pretty, but it works.
    [quoted image]

You should post this in the "Best Hacks and Repairs" post. I don't see any issues with that at all. And if anything, its going to relieve some thermal stress from the adjoining bridge when one heats up more than the other.

    Quoted from bigguybbr:

If you use lead solder, be sure to have proper ventilation!

Good ventilation is needed because the flux in the solder melts and turns to vapor (and therefore becomes airborne). Not because of the lead content.

Lead melts and turns to liquid. You'd need a much higher heat to turn lead into a vapor.

That being said, its more important to keep your work area neat and tidy and don't eat while using lead solder. Your change of ingesting the lead from your fingers is much higher than your chance of breathing it in. And don't rub your eyes.

I've done that in a pinch.

I'd label them as J117A and J117B or whatever your connector number is.

When I worked at 7-11, we had a nickel or dime glued to the floor near the front door.
It was just our lousy entertainment watching 2 or 3 people a day try to pick it up.

    Quoted from pinballinreno:

    Every pinball machine needs:
    Tape
    Drywall screws
    Wire-nuts
    nails
    keys
    paper clips
    wire ties
    rubberbands
    Or they wont work right.

And aluminum foil to repair blown fuses.

Here is a WPC neophyte repair or a revenge repair...I do not know.

    No 18+volts? I wonder why

Traces and through holes contacts all torn up. Fun,fun, fun.

C30 will require a stitch as well, otherwise you'll be wondering why it still isn't working.

My electronics teacher back in 1989/1990 taught me that 1 strand from a piece of 14 AWG lamp cord is 1A. He'd often rebuild fuses using this method.
No idea how accurate he was, but he did it all the time.
