    Quoted from Atari_Daze:

I like the zip tie for good measure.

They drilled 2 big holes to get that zip tie in
Had to be a tad creative because of those holes and missing traces, but it is fixed.

Now on to the female side, which is even a bigger mess..
Multiple wires soldered together, half burned connector left, etc.
    Surprising it didn't short anything..

Not the worst I have seen, but still not very pretty
The game works but it is a no-brainer to remove the hack, clean it all up and put a fresh connector in.
This is a power board from a Sega Frankenstein.

    Looks Frankensteined for sure.

A new-to-me Taxi. Lots of wire nuts and electrical tape in this one. Here's the best of the best. I love a good challenge...

Yeah, sadly, I recognize that one too.....

First of all, wrong coil. Second of all look at at the bare wire which is overkill in gauge. I started banging on the flipper and check out the arc that I screenshot off a video.

Williams coils in a GTB game might be ok but I got 2 of the right ones from Steve Young and full flipper kit.

Maybe not for a pinball machine, but if I’m ever going to repair a carrot it’s game on.

    #2809 3 years ago

Damn it I've seen so many wire nuts.
    Butt splice it guys!

    #2810 3 years ago

I just picked up a game with flippers that had dry rotted rubber hot glued back on with elastic bands put over it...sweet

Has anyone seen the videos of a guy repairing everything under the sun with ramen and super glue? Interesting stuff.

    Quoted from Pinballsoul:

Yes. I don't care for the ramen noodles, etc but am impressed with many of his finishing skills. If he used wood bondo on cabinets (maybe filling in lock bar holes) I think he could probably do a good job spotting in the color for a decent repair.

    #2813 3 years ago
    Quoted from Canuck_pinhead:

In my HS I just picked up a few months ago the lower pop bumper apparently stopped working... solution by some jackass? Well simply drill 5 wood screws around the bumper so the ball doesn't get lodged in the nook there.
    Genius. [quoted image]

    Update:
Had repair guy over yesterday. In a matter of a minute he traced the problem back to the board where a previous repair to the trace had been attempted at the switches. They failed to do it well... and thus they decided that screws into the playfield was the foolproof option. smh.

Here's a few from a Millionaire I worked on recently. The sling plastic was funny cause it wasn't even the right shape, so they bastardized a CBW.

I'm most impressed at the skill shot... Why fix/replace the motor when you can cover the flashing plastic that says skill shot?

Alligator clips under playfield make me nervous. If you are committed to the MOD then solder that thing in there. Otherwise one bump, vibration and your clip is on the loose and just needs to bounce into a coil and it's bad news bears.

    #2827 3 years ago
    Quoted from DCRand:

How do you know they didn’t originally use zip ties?

I was at the arcade when one day I saw them unbox a new machine right in front of my eyes, it was a Capt. Fantastic. No zip ties!! lol

I do not share your fear with regards to alligator clips. Any that I have hooked up were always in a position that if one are to come unclipped it would just drop down and hang in midair.

Repairing a dead Lost World. I guess the bulbs were coming loose under the sling plastics so they cut some of their clothes off to wedge the bulb in tight.

Replaced the plastic coil sleeve with metal.
Eventually fried it as the fuses were wrong and in turn knocked out part of the board.

Metal sleeves were pretty common, I've seen plenty of them in older games. I always replace them, but I don't see it as a hack. You can still buy them.

Those are cheap, not... I usually toss the metal ones if it's even possible as they usually fuse to the coil and ruin it.

Holy cow, I didn't even look at the price. I've probably tossed dozens of them over the years, maybe I should have been saving them. Ha!

    #2837 3 years ago

I got brass ones from the Bally parts department when it existed. Aluminum ones from Wico and Amusement Emporium.

    #2838 3 years ago

Chicago Coin used a lot of them

    #2839 3 years ago

The good news...it didn't go through the playfield.

Have not gotten around to fixing this yet on my F-14 tomcat. I did noticed that there is a disconnect installed also. It also had a wire soldered to the back of the connector. Not sure why yo would cut a wire bundle like that.

I've actually had two projects where the wires were cut like this rather than unplugged at the connectors in the head box!

Pretty sure in this thread I posted the Barracora I got like that, and had to repair. They had stripped the wire ends excessively, twisted and taped, with electrical tape. Sure took a lot of cutting, cleaning, soldering, and heat-shrinking to fix that game, but I got it 100%. They'd also for some unknown reason twisted a lot of the lamp matrix diodes so that they were shorted, and any of the braided GI runs along the sockets where there was a piece missing (to separate them intentionally!) they had soldered in jumpers! I saved a Sonic Butterfly with the whole bundle cut like that... the guy I bought it from donated it to a church... and when the church closed, he went to take it back, but they'd redone the door frame. He never knew there were Jones plugs 5 inches from where he cut

Wires soldered directly to the solenoid connector.
I see a large screw coming through the playfield.
Loose screw on the EOS, maybe not a hack.
Something looks a little funky on the coil wiring.

    What am I missing?

Solenoid Expander Relay missing the cover.
