Did a repair at a customer's house this past weekend. Couldn't really stop and take pictures but you'll get the idea.

First we resolved the non-working slingshot -
    IMG_0554 (resized).JPGIMG_0554 (resized).JPG
    IMG_0555 (resized).JPGIMG_0555 (resized).JPG

Next we made the sketchy GI a little more solid -
    IMG_0556 (resized).JPGIMG_0556 (resized).JPG

And finally I put one of these on the CPU where there had been one of those giant wire-wound cement encased power resistors like you find on a rectifier board. Yikes. Yes, it worked and probably had been for years.

I take it the resistor you install was the proper wattage and the one you removed was "overkill"?

I can't tell if the previous owner of this Solar Ride was a genius, or a madman. The experience on resurrecting this machine does deserve it's own thread. I'll be following up with more details there.

Do they actually work? Impressive if so.

    #1758 5 years ago

Not exactly. I don't know if it ever worked correctly. There is so much wrong with it that I am still sorting out.

It was dirty in a Long-Time-In-Storage sort of way. I tend to believe it never worked as hoped.

Never saw this before, but this IC looks to be chopped down from a bigger one. Saw it in a Bally Night Rider.

That's just the label etched off-center. A quick images search showed other examples with the text towards the right.

There looked to be something cut off the right end...I will have to look again next time I am over there.

Just the ceramic case cracked near leg 12. Probably due to a screwdriver pry attempt. As long as the froghair wire wasn't damaged, all is well.

I would have chosen a smaller switch, but I like the idea.
I have installed a couple of small toggle switches in my Bally Old Chicago - one to disable the chimes for nighttime stealth play, & one to disable the tilt for roughhouse play.

Working on a Magic City and they intstalled a small push button with 2 wires running to the reset relay coil. Start game, push button and ball. All this because they had the roll tilt ball in the game. Too lite to activate the switch....

And not a terrible hack, power attained by wall switch mounted to back side with heavy duty going to outlet.

I asked the local pinball service guy that same question back in the 1980's . Don't remember his reply though
Good guy but , he always put some credits in the game before he left.

I grabbbed a firepower 2 from a customer this week. First thing i noticed was this awesome display hack. I think of they had used a little bit more silicon it may have started working

So the display didn't even work? What a bunch of wasted effort.

I put a Fire! back together that was a basket case, searched forever for the correct display panel for it - eventually found one but it took so long that in the meantime I just made my own. Two pieces of wire-wrap board bolted together using board scraps as splints between the halves, had to turn the header connectors sideways on two of the displays, cut some of the excess board off the edge of two displays for correct spacing, attached a regular System 11 display controller to the back, and made a small "swap" harness to move a couple wires around to reflect a difference between "old" System 11 and the harness in Fire! ... definitely a hack and a half but it worked great and fit correctly, too!

I'm restoring a Doozie table and one of the previous owners used some sort of red spray paint to try to seal the backglass. I'm now slowly scrapping the red paint off the areas that show through the glass. Going to triple thick after that and repaint.
