Great, I buy a WCS (a top 3 game for me) and now I have 112 pages of Owner's Forum to read. It's on!

Quoted from BioBa:

I decided to dress the goalie in the proper outfit goalies wore at the 95 cup. I am making a German, USA, Italian and French goalie decal with national badges.
Not quite finished but here is a pre-view.
Left is original, right with proper jerseys.[quoted image]

As someone who is color blind AND has no interest or experience with soccer, let me unqualifyingly say: The guy on the right is a horrible version of The Incredible Hulk. Which is probably why I like it. Now all I can think of is making a Hulk sticker for my goalie...

I had the BEST stuck ball ever this week! The ball bounced up and rested on the plastic directly below the soccer ball. The ball was sitting between and touching both the spinning soccer ball and screw head. It just sat there spinning with the soccer ball! I watched it, stunned, trying to figure out what was happening for about ten seconds before reaching for my phone to snap a pic...which of course led to the ball falling down first. That'll never happen again...

Quoted from DBUM:

I need some help choosing leds. I have no idea where to start. And you mean comet cyan? Non-frosted? I have the ones from pinball life.

Comet has an awesome inexpensive Sampler Pack of different bulbs to try. I bought that and some others to toy with. Spent a few hours putting different bulbs in different places, and placed the real order. I think I bought $20-30 of bulbs to toy with, and several hours of "entertainment" of messing with it.

Anyone know where I can find a replacement cable? It's coming off the Opto board on the front left of the machine (see finger point). Mine is flaky and when I move it around I get errors.

Quoted from DBUM:

Should my lights be dimming everytime a flipper is fired? I assume that's normal due to the power draw

My lights dim briefly. The screen also gets a tiny bit frazzled when the ball kicks up the habitrail after a goal, like there's too much voltage drop. Despite taking some things off there may still be too much plugged in on that same outlet (for me).

Quoted from Its_me_aj:

Joined the club with a pretty exceptional example of a game. A good cleaning and a few little things here and there and it will be solid. Put some LEDs in tonight and I’ll get the rest finished after I put a list together.

It looks like it's in great shape, but is that mold on the flippers, or pitting, (or designer mods!) or just spots? I've never seen flippers look like that.

Is it me or is the Tackle target the most useless thing ever? Like, you really can't aim for it, it's only 10M, and it's tucked away where you forget it's even there.

While I know I've hit that ramp combo and got the score, I've done it three times recently but no recognition. Odd.

As for that replacement goalie, I got mine from Marcos a few months ago.

Quoted from Coz:

Friend of mine has a prototype wcs94 thats all original, less than 350 plays in mint condition. What would this be valued at?
[quoted image][quoted image]

I think the value is from "350 plays in mint condition". The right person who wants "a new WCS" might pay you $5k+.

I'll easily pay $2k

Does anyone have the problem of the ball not wanting to go down into the striker hole? On mine the ball will fly back there, "hit" the hole, hang mid air for a second and then drop down. Or just bounce out. I'd think there would be something that would guide the ball down -like- a scoop, but on mine it looks like it his the playfield edge. Anyone?

Quoted from Giebzilla:

A few nights ago I had insomnia and was walking around my house with a black lamp when I noticed these numbers on the playfield. Yes, I know that sounds weird, but it’s fairly common to do in Arizona

This QUOTE will give me insomnia tonight.

Quoted from hanford29:

I've got a huge favor to ask. I traded for a WCS. The guy took the backbox off to transport it (which we agreed on to make it easier to transport and fit into my basement. Unfortunately the pictures he took were not detailed and I've tried getting it all back together, but keep blowing fuses.
Would anyone that owns WCS be willing to take detailed pictures of the inside of the backbox and post them.
Thanks in advance.

If you need more close ups let me know! I'm awaiting my first IR LED replacement from Marcos so it's already "opened up" (but no, the opto is not in the back box )

Quoted from DBUM:

Has anyone used comet pinballs kit for this game? I want to get full LEDs but can't decide between sunlight white or cool white for the gi.

Interesting that others are recommending warmer lights. I put in Cool White Comets (my first full LED swap) and love them. I think the machine wants cooler colors, and Wildcat's pic does nothing for -me-. To each his own! And I'm color blind, so my boo boo eyes are seeing things a bit differently too.

What I did was order about 30 different colors/brightnesses/temps and tried them all out. For about $30 it was fun, and after a few hours I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted. Also, Comet had a sampler pack that might work out well for this exercise.

Quoted from Mattyk:

My rubbers are neon yellow titans. Was thinking about doing red flippers. What do you guys like better? Yellow, red or one of each?
[quoted image]

I think the yellow looks great! As long as you clean them. Every. Single. Day.

And one of each sounds horrible. I like my current black, but I think red would be OK too.

Quoted from InsideOutlane:

I chuckle when people lament that there's "some dog" all over the game. Dude, that's Striker!

HOLY CRAP STRIKER IS "REAL"??!? I'm not a soccer fan and know nothing about the World Cup, but I've always assumed Striker was added to the pin to make it more accessible. I never ever would have guessed it was the actual mascot for the 1994 World Cup! I know one of the reasons I love the game is because of my love of dogs. Haha, so interesting...

Quoted from lecter:

Hi! Do you have any idea what happened below (see attached photos)? Why did someone solder it instead of exchange the plugs? Can it be a reason of the resets of the game?
[quoted image][quoted image]

They fixed it "permanently"...until it breaks again. Or until you need to pull parts out that are now soldered in. I don't think this itself would cause game resets, but whoever did this may have done some other crappy repairs that are now manifesting.

Quoted from Toine79:

The thing that does not please me is the situation under the playfield. A lot of corosion due to humidity.

I'm no playfield genius but with that much rust/corrosion UNDER the playfield, how's the topside? I'd only imagine it'd be super rough with that much moisture floating around at one point.

Quoted from arsmith7:

Are there other switches some folks have or run in other ways that soldering wasn't required?

I'd recommend getting comfortable soldering

It's my least favorite thing to do on a pin, but it's inevitable that something will fail or fall off and will require some soldering.

Quoted from MegadethHangar18:

Mines like a hard plastic and the ball just hits and slips on it and gets no real bonce or redirection off of it.

If you change it, hang on to your butt. It's a different game when you go from hard to soft rubber. I never even PLAYED a soft rubber version until I brought mine home. I thought the pinball was haunted, moving (spinning) on its own everywhere and getting pretty wild.

Side story: When I checked out my WCS to buy I touched the soft rubber soccer ball and asked the seller: "Shouldn't this be hard plastic?" Hahaha...he gently said "Uh, no, no it should be soft rubber. Like that" He was right.

Yay or nay ? (on the powder)
[quoted image]

Not for me. I LOVE colorful powdercoating, like the blue on Dialed In or red on AC/DC. But not a fan of any gold on a pin (including the coin toss). But it doesn't matter what I think on your pin

Quoted from martymart:

I have not had any luck removing the marking from my soccer ball with any of the products described. Has anyone tried a very fine wet rub sandpaper?

If Simple Green and Magic Eraser doesn't remove it...well, I'd be careful with anything stronger. Simple Green takes ALL the black off my ball. And Magic Eraser is like superfine sandpaper. I'd be curious as to how many different replacement balls are out there, and how they're made differently.

Here are some pics of my completed restoration for those that commented on the wire forms

Quoted from KneeKickLou:

Was just wondering how people like to hit final draw? On my game its backhand-able from the right flipper and that seems like an easier shot and less risky than trying to bang it in from the left side.

90% of the time I'm using the left flipper. If I happen to trap it in the right I'll backhand it, but I'd say my success is equal from both sides.

Quoted from Banksy:

Hi I recently purchased a World Cup Soccer (my first pin)and after owning it for 2 months my dmd has started malfunctioning. Any help on how to resolve would be very much appreciated.
[quoted image][quoted image]

It's probably -not- it but check the voltage at your outlet. Awhile ago I had too many things plugged into my line and the voltage was too low, causing the screen to freak out when I hit the flippers.

#7285 2 years ago

I've had a new issue...or feature?...pop up recently. When I get to the World Cup Final, the soccer ball sounds like it starts spinning -really- fast. Like, "uh, that's about to explode" fast. It lasts for 10-30 seconds and then goes back to normal speed. I've played it probably 1000 games, but first noticed it about a hundred games ago. Does anyone know if this is supposed to happen?

Need some tech help. I think I know the direction I'm going but would like confirmation/advice. My trough coil softly fires:
-Randomly with nothing going on nearby
-If I repeatedly activate the flippers
-If my METALLICA (!) does a ball search next to it
-Almost always if only there's one or more balls in the trough.

If I lightly jiggle the harness that I'm pointing to in the picture, several trough/ball switches trigger. My diagnosis: There's a bad connection where I'm pointing that with the slightest vibration is triggering the trough coil (although that doesn't explain why it rarely happens when the trough is empty). I think I need to repin that connection, which I've never done before. Any tips on the pin size or recommendations on equipment to buy?

After doing some troubleshooting on my trough and re-punching some wires I've determined the contacts inside this plug are sketchy. How do I go about identifying this exact white plug so I can replace it? It seems like there are many different ones with tiny variations out there. I can't imagine there's a "standard Williams plug with x number of pins".

Quoted from bakerhillpins:

Did you use a proper punch-down tool or a screwdriver? If you used a screwdriver, that's probably why the connection is marginal.
What connector does it plug into.. it looks like a 12 pin, 22awg, .156 which Marco should have a substitute on their site. The OEM Pancon connectors that size are NLA I believe. If they are made they are hard to find...

It's the board that the trough boards connect to. I used a punch down tool. When everything is plugged in, if I push ever-so-gently on the plastic casing it glitches. The connection from the plug to the wire would likely not cause that issue. Either way, thanks for the info on the plug. Replacing that will at least eliminate one variable. It's also possible it -is- a punch issue as the connector slots where the wires go are a little bit mangled from previous owners.

Quoted from bakerhillpins:

Sounds more like bad solder joints on the board.

I would have thought that too, but if I pull the plug out halfway it helps the problem. I think there are dead spots in the plug connectors. Either way, I should just pull the board a reflow the solder. I did it once before, so now that I'm a master it should be easy!

Quoted from arcyallen:

How do I go about identifying this exact white plug so I can replace it?

Quoted from Grandnational007:

Just replace it/re-pin it with a correctly spaced/sized molex connector.

So, about that first question...?

#7456 1 year ago
Quoted from Grandnational007:

Haha, sorry about that. It "could" be replaced with a .156 molex style connector with the correct number of corresponding pins on it. Or replace it with a new IDC connector (which you have now).
I'd do an 8 pin and a 3 pin, and use something to block the key if you can't find a 12 pin.

So any .156 plastic molex style or IDC connector with the same number of pins would work? I've always assumed there are many "13 pin connectors" out there. If they're all the same then I've been overthinking this.

#7471 1 year ago

Well, my WCS seems to have presented to me a giant middle finger.

I'm getting the "Opto Trough Bad Check Connectors, Wires, and 12V Supply" message. Here are the other symptoms:
-Trough will spit balls out randomly anytime it's powered up. I repinned a flakey connector, which helped the "jiggle a wire and make it trigger" issue
-C11 cap is domed, which I assume means it's gone bad
-I have a corroded chip (see pics)
-I get a U6 Chksum error on occasion
-All my voltage test points are way off:
-TP1 should be 12v, is 28v
-TP2 5v is 10.5v
-TP3 12V is 26V
-TP4 is .8v (should this have voltage? I don't see a default printed)
-TP6 50v is 154v(!)
-TP7 20v is 44v

Any advice? I'm guessing replacing that cap would be the start, but this type of troubleshooting is a hair beyond what I'm used to.
