I am so happy to join the club! Thanks to herbertbsharp for the easy sale today. He even let me play a few other machines he had. What a great guy!

Can someone help? I am looking for a metal piece to go at the end of the plastic ramps. I don’t have a manual yet (one is on order) but I would like to see if anyone can identify this part. I have looked on Marco and a few other sites but with no luck. It is like a L bracket to protect the ramps and help secure it to a post. Thanks for any help.

Quoted from bowtech:

So I'm making a trade Friday if all goes well and will be joining the club. Thing is the deal seems a little shaky and I'm not getting a warm fuzzy feeling. He is bringing it to me and I have not played it yet. I plan on playing it and looking it over first before he leaves with mine but my question is this, what known issues should I look for that could end up costing me big money. He rates the playing field as a 9/10 and cabinet as 8/10. It has some leds and he said all the magnets and magna save works. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Take your time and look everything over. The ramps are impossible to get so make sure the ramps are in good shape and that the ramp diverters work. Slide off the glass and lift the playfield. Look in the back box and make sure there are no crazy hack jobs and the battery holder is clean. Put the machine in switch mode and check every switch. And play several games. Expect some wear around the holes, broken plastics near the pops, and the soccer ball may be loud. It’s a great game so good luck.

My wcs is coming along nicely. Here is a before and after photo. I have replaced every plastic with new ones along with protectors, new titan rubbers, comet leds, and side art blades. I Have been cleaning and fixing for 3 days straight and the game is working at 99%. The only issue I am having is the left flipper is not working with the assist hole and lighting the in lanes above the pops. The right flipper works fine. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

If anyone would like an entire set of used plastics, just pm me.

Quoted from JoshinDC:

I think the lane switch and assist eject are triggered by the second flipper opto. When you go into switch test mode and push the left flipper button, do you get 1 or 2 switches triggering? If just 1 then that's likely your problem. Try cleaning the opto with some rubbing alcohol and check for obvious problems first (is the plastic opto interrupter broken? Does the left button itself look the same as the right?
Good luck!

Thanks for the advice, I cleaned the optos in alcohol and a toothbrush, and the second flipper switch registers in switch mode. I even took the opto off and reflowed the solder but no good. I might try to take the opto off of another machine to test it. I haven't messed with the fliptronics board, should I be looking there as well?

*Edit* I have isolated the problem. The flipper opto must be bad since I put one in from my DH and it fixed the problem. I’ll have to order a new one and I should be good to go.

Quoted from JoshinDC:

Looks like you found your problem! Out of curiosity, were you getting both switches triggering in switch test then? (ie, 2 switches should show as closed when you push one flipper button all the way in).
Josh

I thought I was getting a good test in switch mode because I would hear two audible beeps when pressing the flipper button, but it turns out that one was intermittent at best. I was thinking about just soldering a new ir controller in there but for 10 bucks I can get the whole thing. So I just ordered another one.

That's a very nice LED job. What did you use behind the backglass?

I just replaced all the bulbs with natural white led's from comet.

Added a topper today. Added leds and a flasher to go off when a goal is scored. I am really happy with the results.

Post a video. Would really like to see that flasher in action.

I tied the flasher in the topper to the red upper goal flasher. I also can switch off the gi and have only the flasher work.

Looks great!
What are you using for gi? I have all warm whites in mine, as I always preferred the look of standard incandescent, but that looks awesome!
Comet bright white 2smds? Domed? A mixture?

I like the cooler whites in my pinball machines so that’s what I put in there for the GI. Comet bulbs call it “natural white” and they are the 1smd super bright frosted. Bought 2 25 packs. Ended up having to order a few more since I went through them all and still needed about 10 more. I should have just ordered the 100 pack.

Quoted from maffewl:

Where did you get the ball? This is a really neat idea.

I was looking for something to put on for a topper so I went on google and looked up soccer ball light. Two pics came up that I was interested in:

The one I went with was a 3D soccer night light. Thinking I was the only one to ever do this I was super stoked until I was reading through old posts and discovered about 50 other people have done the exact same thing! DOH! Well if you want to see what everyone else did it is back around page 49. I paid around $20 shipped from Boscovs department store (company I never heard of before). There are two sizes. Do not get the “mini” since it is tiny. It was like $7.99 but with $12 shipping.

I have two things left to make my game 100%. I noticed two posts on the right orbit with nothing attached to them and did some digging. It appears there is a one way metal wire gate that is supposed to go there. Should I bother replacing this? This is what it looks like below.

I also need a new apron since mine is damaged down by the ball return and the kickback plunger. It is digging into the playfield and I want to find a replacement. Does anyone know where I can find one? Marco has what I need but of course it’s out of stock.

Quoted from Zzap:

Amazing work! How much effort was there in masking off the trophy?

It was actually pretty quick and easy. I used clear yellow so I only had to mask around the trophy. Using frisket paper allowed me to trace around the trophy with an xacto knife. I cut around the white parts and left them in place. Then I pulled the frisket off the trophy area and painted right over the black. Then I just peeled off the rest exposing the white and the background.

There is a part in the official list that really puzzles me... Here is the list: https://www.ipdb.org/files/2811/Bally_1994_World_Cup_Soccer_Parts_List.txt
the part I'm talking about is 12-6466-17 (ball guide 4 1/4")
Anyone knows where does this part go? (I don't even have it in my WCS 94)
[quoted image]

I think I know exactly where that would go. Look at the left outline where the ball save is. I have two holes in the playfield where I think that would go. Mine does not have one.

#4617 5 years ago
Quoted from provato:

Yes I can see it, but what purpose does it serve? protection of the ramp from airballs?
Moreover, maybe there is another one on the right ramp?

I have wondered the same thing. It must be for protection since my soccer ball will throw my ball around violently sometimes. But if that was the case you would think it would be a bit bigger or extend up the ramp more.

Quoted from SDTMinSTL:

***Dumb question alert***
For those of you that have done the LED strips that light the stadium lights on the upper part of the playfield; How did you run these and where did you attach the strip? I bought some assuming it would be pretty straight forward install but as I am looking, I don't know how to tackle it. It would seem the best bet to mount them would be the underside of the back box towards the playfiled, but if I do, it would not be able to be connected to one of the GI bulbs like I had planned.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Not at all a dumb question. Most of these strips are 12v and plug into the back box where f117? is and shares it’s power with the 12v unregulated power supply. Simple install under the plastic glass channel attached to the back near the head. But with World Cup, you have to install it further back under the head and closer to the fake stadium lights decal to give it the effect you are looking for. Also it sounds like you have 6.3v strips which would hook up to a GI bulb. If this is the case, you will want to run the wiring from under the head where your strips are, into the black, large wire tube holder and along all the rest of the wires back up to the playfield for a neat install. This will require probably more wire than you have so find some appropriate speaker wire and modify. I use alligator clips so I can remove them quickly if needed.

Finished adding comet LED's to the game tonight. Love the way it looks. Looked so dingy with standard bulbs.

I know it’s a personal thing but cool white or natural white leds look so much better in pinball machines to me. It just makes all the colors in the plastics and on the playfield pop! Nicely done!

I got these off of EBay the other day. I think it turned out nice.

I also hate the way yellow leds look. Have you ever tried to put yellow leds in a yellow insert? Yuck! I found frosted pink wonderful in yellow inserts.

Never thought of painting leds to get the color I want. Hmmm.

Quoted from Bendit:

Thanks guys! I was told the GI connectors are a little fried.
If the game was switched to LEDs, that should ease the cooking of the connectors, correct?
Should I then worry about them if all lights work?
Awesome tips. Thanks.
Never really noticed the soccer ball noise because it's always loud where I've played it. Is it loud because of lower gearing?
Are there gears I should be mindful of?

Here is what my connector looked like. Yikes!

#4655 5 years ago

With the motor removed, the ball should spin with no resistance. If it does not spin freely, there may be old grease buildup in the gears. Flush it out with some carb cleaner. Then fill it with some synthetic grease. Also spray some carb cleaner in the motor and around the armature. Check the pinion gear to see if it is worn out. Add couple drops of bearing oil around the motor bushings. Reinstall the motor. There is very little adjustment so try to pull the motor away from the gearbox gears as you tighten the screws.

My motor was doing the same but it was caused by a rubber bushing that sat between the motor and the gearbox. I simply removed it. I also cleaned out everything as I stated above and now I can barely hear the motor running when playing.

#4659 5 years ago

I believe the pinion is press fit onto the shaft. It would be difficult to replace it without damaging the motor. Also the pinion is not something easily found due to it's relative small size. It appeared to be 32 pitch but I never measured it. It would be nice to be able to replace with other pinions, but then the motor would have to be adjustable which could cause a whole lot of other problems with fit and gear mesh problems. I can see why they would choose to do it this way. Your best bet would be to replace the motor with a new gear on it. My motor's brushes are almost gone I noticed so I will have to buy a new one sooner than later too.

I like to personalize the aprons on my pins and decided to add some commemorative coins from the 94 World Cup. I added ribbon to dress it up a little but am not sure if I like it. Stay or go?

Any clue why flashers and right playfield general illumination wouldn’t light?
Forgive me for the ignorant question as I’m brand new and this is my first machine I’m trying to fix.

Welcome to the never ending repair of pinball ownership! It shouldn’t be too difficult to fix your problem. If you don’t have a manual for your machine, you can download one here.

https://www.ipdb.org/machine.cgi?id=2811

The gi that is out is probably on one of the molex connectors plugged into the power board in the back box. Look for connectors j115 through j122 to see if any are loose or discolored. They are located near the bottom of the back box, and you will have to lower the speaker panel to get at them. They should be white but often they will start to fail and cause scorching and turn brown. Unplug and plug back in. You can do it with the power on. Sometimes wiggling the plugs will get them to turn the lights back on. Look for wires that have been pulled out of the connectors too.

Thanks. That guy wants 110 shipped for that one and a few randoms. I can get the whole kit for under 200. Seems like that is the best way to go.

I know buying a whole set of plastics is a lot of money but if you want to prevent it from happening again, I would suggest to sell a little more of your blood and get some plastic protectors. You can buy them here.

They fit great and protect your valuable plastics from damage.

#4718 5 years ago

That’s odd. I have never seen the official topper for wcs in person but I have seen pictures of them and they all appear to go straight across. I would try heating it up with a hair dryer and sandwich in between two 2x4s.

#4720 5 years ago

I will go test mine but I don’t ever recall it going into search mode when the ball is waiting to be plunged.

No it does not. I would bet you the switch is not registering closed as the ball sits there. Go into switch test mode to see if the switch is working.

I have led and lcd on my pins and both are great. The advantage of the led is that it is bright and colors are really sharp, and it fits perfectly within the old dmd footprint. It’s also cheaper. The downside is it has no adjustments other than brightness and contrast. The lcd is much more customizable with several modes to choose from. I like both dotsxl and hires options. The downside is it has a larger display and is more expensive.

Personally I like the lcd better due to the different display settings, but love my led version too. You won’t be disappointed either way.

Hello everybody! This is my first post on the pinside forum and I’m happy that I can be logged here . One year ago, I started dreaming about my own pinball machine. A couple days ago I found one interesting offer, seller sent me a few photos. Unfortunately, as a beginner I'm not able to make an assessment of the condition of the machine. I know that it will be necessary to go and test the pinball there, but I think that the photos can also be helpful. I’d like to ask you to tell me whether it’s worth buying. Can you give me some advice about it? The seller is convincing me that the machine is 100% working but I know pinballs often need to be repaired. Do you think I’m able to learn quick how to repair the pinball (I’m an absolutely beginner)?[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

The machine looks in great shape. It has minor wear in the scoops but looks pretty clean otherwise. World Cup Soccer is a great first pinball to own. It is easy to get into and tough enough to keep you coming back for more. Play it a bunch and if it feels right then go for it. You will have to maintain it and fix things here and there but that can be rewarding as well. These forums contain a wealth of knowledge. I never owned a machine 2 years ago and now I just replaced my first playfield. It's a great hobby to get into. Welcome!

Quoted from accidental:

I finally joined the World Cup Soccer club after many years of wanting one! It's such a great game. I've got a few questions for the seasoned owners:
Firstly, my goalie pad is snapped but the decal appears to be holding quite well. I can't seem to find replacement parts. Are there any? If not, any suggestions for materials to use to make a new backing pad? I'll aim to re-use the decal and scan it while I've got it off the game.
Secondly, I'm finding the game to be quite easy, so I've set it to Extra Hard. Are there any settings besides what will be installed with Extra Hard that I should look at to add some more challenge?
Finally, I notice two switches at the ball lock to hold two balls but it only ever holds one. Are there any modes or settings that lock two balls up there?

The rubber pad for the goalie is hard to find but you can just use a lexan piece as it's replacement. Marco has them.

Open the right outlane and have the left ball kickout off in the settings.

The game will only hold one ball. That is standard.
