I have these same symptoms (booting into audit mode, auto-scrolling though the audits, fresh batteries) on my Phoenix, System 4. I have to do the quick power switch trick when it is first turned on to get it to go into attract mode. I haven't done much troubleshooting, since it's low priority, given the game plays.
